EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY....... October 3, 1977. CBOSBY 8S. KOYES.. Average mrorn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being more than rages | of any other daily paper in Washington, and more than that of ali the others added together. Members of Congress and others who have business in Washington are coming to the city by every train and areon the lookout for quarters for the session. A large propor- tion of them seem inclined to take rooms and board rather than to go to the hotels, conse- quently those who have eligible rooms or can supply satisfactory board should make known the fact through the advertising | columns of THE Star. ———+e —___ Double Sheet Star. In recognition of the very liberal advertis- ing patronage extended to it, and in order to preserve the proper balance between adver- tisers and readers, THE STAR will be pub- lished next Saturday in double-sheet or eight-page form. As these double-sheet issues always have an exceptionally large circulation, both in the city and through the mails, on account of the large quantity and excellent variety of reading matter they con- tain, and as we will then have somespare space at command for displayed advertise- ments, an excellent opportunity will thus be afforded those who have special business announcements to make to reach an unusu- ally wide circle of customers, both at home and abroad. . In all the qualities that go to make up a frst-class newspaper and advertising me- dium THE STAR is absolutely without a asthe public very well understands, the determination of tts publishers that this supremacy shall always be main- tained. | | | F | | The Relief Probie: A commanication in THE STAR of Mon- day expressed some sound views upon the desirability of encouraging home industries and home business mes as a me: of relief from dull times. The opinion was further expressed that the colonization scheme of the Labor Exchange would work disadvan- tageously, by taking away customers from our business men, and sending from us a class of enterprising laborers and mechanics who are needed here, and who goto make up the wealth of the city. As weunderstand the case it does not seem probable that the colonization scheme will deprive the city ofa class who are likely to be of much benefit as customers to our business men, or who are adapted for mechanical or city industries Or occupations. The men who naturally will be sent away are of the class of plantation Sands who came here during the war in im- mense numbers; who found employment to some extent while the extensive system of public improvements was going on, but who are now left stranded here, with ne work whatever to do, and wit the certainty that there will be no work for them in the future. They are here im such numbers that they were barely kept afloat when many millions of dollars were being spent annually upon public works. There will be no future expenditure of money on this scale togive them employment. They are only fitted for farm work, for which they Were trained, and they should now go back to the farms, where their labor is greatly needed. At the same time we think the ef- forts of the Labor Exchange should be di- rected to sending them to the neighboring States of Marylandand Virginia, and to the adjacent counties of those states, where their labor will serve to benefit our markets, and bring customers,to our dealers. It is not only Of no service to these thousands of destitute unemploycd people to encourage them to linger here where there is no work and can be no work for them, but it isthe height of cruel- ty. If they stay here they must beg or steal for a livelihood, and to neither case can they be of any advantage to our business mea or to thecity, to say nothing of the degradation it will bring upon the vagrants themselves. —_—_+e-—____ The sensational reports of a bloody en- counter between American and Mexican troops have been exploded. Lieut. Bullis, in bis excursion across the Rio Grande with one hundred men, tocapture an encampment Of predatory Indians, did not accomplish his mission in consequence of the Indians being warned of danger, and the Americans were followed on their return by a body of seem- ‘tngly hostile Mexican cavalry, but there was no collision and nobody hurt. Still the tem- perof the Mexicans seems to be so unpleas- ant that a collision may occur any day. — ‘We have a communication in behalf of Constructor Steele stating, in regard to the discharge of employes in his department, notiecd in yesterday’s STAR, that the dis- charge was made on an order from the Navy department reducing the sum of money that bad been allowed for September, two thous- and dollars. It is further stated that no work- men from the northern cities or elsewhere have been employed in their places; that Constructor Steele has always given the pre- ference to Washington mechanics; and that, in short, bis administration of affairs at the Washington yard has been altogether lovely. All this differs very widely from the infor- mation we have received from sources we have heretofore found reliable, but in the in- terests of fair-play we give the denial the same prominence we allowei the allega- tions, and propose to reach the exact truth as soon as may be. One of the latest ideas of this progressive age has just been developed in Cincinnati, where an enterprising firm has asked of the city authorities the important privilege to excavate the streets and lay lines of shaft- ing for the purpose of supplying “power” to parties needing the same, and willing to rent it. The arrest of General Pearson, of the Pean- sylvania militia, who disappeared so mys- teriously during the strikers’ riot in Pitts. burg, looks like a silly piece of persecation, Which will result in nothing but his acquit- tal. The complainant lays stress on the fact that he had no hand nor part in the riotous Proceedings, and that innocent persons were Killed by the firing ordered by Pearson. There probably never was a case where a mob was fired upon by the military in which Some innocent psople did not get injured or lose their lives. The only questi@ to ba de- cided is, was General Pearson justified in giving the fatal order to fre? If he was not he can be punished; if he was, any jury in the country would acquit him. —_<-e-_ The National Union made its appearance this morning in handsome shape (for a first mumber) and with the marks of news enter- Prise. ————o=>=_—Xx—X—X—— LBS.
