HAWKINS SENTENCED TO HE HANGED.— At Ellicott City, Md., in the circuit court yestercay, Roseberry Hawkins, the negro who was Convicted some days ago of com- jaitting ap outrage upon Ida Shaeffer, a little girl thirteen years of age, as she was going bore from school, near the Relay joure. was sentenced to be hanged. Chief Judge Miller and Associate Justices Hayden and Hammond were all on the bench when sentence was pronounced. Judge Miller, in imposing the extreme penalty of the law, iemarked that this was a case in which there could be no extenuating circumsiances. The only question was @s to the identity of the critetpal, avd that being fully established, nothing but the death penalty would satisfy the demands of justice. Judge Miller ad- monished the prisoner tn a touching manner to prepare to meet his fate, and then pro- Lounecd the death sentence. General Clay had employed White's qnotber as cook, but finding that she had | been robbing him of silver plate and other articles, had discbarged her. Sanday morn- | ing he started from his farm, six miles from | Richmond, Ky., to visit a negro charch in | the neighborhood for tbe purpose of hiring another servant. While on his way he dis- covered & loose horse in a pasture near the road side and the negro Perry White endeav- oring to conceal himeelf behind the animal. | White bad threatened Clay’s life, and was | known as a desperate character, and, upon | perceiving him, Clay immediately leaped down, con frouted the negro and ordered him to throw*up his hands. The negro obeyed, and Clay talked to hima reughly,and ordered him to !cave ihe piace, and telling bim that | if he moved frora his position until he was remounted he would kill him. As soon as Clay started for bis borse the negro ruske1 atter him, but Clay turned suddenly and fired twice, hitting the negro in the neck and breast. General Clay then rode to town and delivered Limseif to the authorities. The coroner's verdict in the case is that White came to his death by a Wound inflicted by C.M. The next day the team of one of our most noted undertakers drove up to the door, and, subsequently, an employes quickly carrieda casket into the house, and | soon thereafter the neighbors found a black. and-tan dog exhibited, neatly laid out in fine rosewood casket. Upon this was laid a great profusion of flowers, surrounding a plate which bore the following: «Leo Gilt man, aged 15 years 9 months 1 day.” The next movementof the lady was to obtain a burial for her pet in Mount Auburn Ceme. tery; but the officers of the corporation would not allow a burial.
