A review of the situation there, however. shows that the Tarks have only succeded in taking a Russian outpost beyor e line of the Lom, and twenty miles in front of the real Russian line of de- fence. It appears, also, from the fact that the Turks in driving this small furce of Ru sians on observation duty across the Lom lost three thousand men, by theirown ad- mission, that the Russiaus contested the ground with an obstinacy that does not give assurance that the Turks will have like suc- cess when they encounter the main body of their adversaries and attempt to force their Ine of communications. Sill, the result of the fighting of the last week has been gen- erally favorable to the Turks, and shows that the invaders have considerable work cut out for them in getting full possession of Bulgaria, and the advance upon Constanti- nople beyond the Balkans will appa- rently be the task of another campaign. ‘The frightful loss of life from exposure, and the formidable expensesof sup plyingarmies Wintering in Bulgaria would seem to be in- centives to both combatants toend the con- test this year, but it is probable that the Rus- Bians have most to suffer froma protracted War.
