Bo re Sected communications returned Another exhibition of the Keely motor was mal given in Philadelphia last Tuesday night, in the presence of quite a number of scientific gentlemen. The Philadelphia Press says thatal! of the tests given were successful, the last one being slightly marred by & split in one of the service pipes, not at all militating against the experiment as a fact. ‘The results demonstrated to those present that the power is generated from hydrant water and ordinary air only, and that with these simple agents an engine can be driven. The vapor passes trom the machine into a steel shell, and into a condensing apparatus, whence it goes [0 & smal! tube and thence to the engine. On Tuesday night the valves were all opened to show the machine was clear, air introduced, and the lever was lifted, the first move showing 1,750 pounds pressure on the gauge to the square inch, and though the chamber for condensing was ‘open the current did not blow ont a match held over it. With 6. pounds air pressure, the gauge indicated " pounds to the inch, and then 6,700 on the third trial. On the fourth it Mfted a large lever (weighed) registering 5.00 pounds dead welg The vapor was turned Into an expulsion chamber and the cap few of with a report like a riffe, frightening half those present, and lastly, a five-horse-power engine, with three-fourth inch siroke and twenty-four- wheel, was driven ai 6% revolutions | le there is no doubt, from y of experts who have witnessed pents, that Mr. Keely has really made & wonderful ¢iscovery, and that a prodigious force can be evolved from the simple ele- ments, water (cold) and air, the public would | like Mr. Keely to make some some practical | application of bis newly-found power, so w it may be harnessed. so to speak, like steam and electricity. Mr. Keely’s appa- Tatus Seems to be a rather expensive affair, his present machine costing $66,000. But the fact that he ts backed by capitalists is an indication that they have faith that his dis- covery will finally be put to some prac- teal use. +<eo-—____ We give Judge Cartter, of the District bench, credit for being too good a lawyer to believe the report that he will not houor a Tequisition from Governor Hampton, of South Carolina, because he does not believe Hampton to be governor de jure of the state pamed. If not de jure the Governor {s cer- tainly such de far‘o. After the government has officially recognized him as governor, and in view of the fact that his claims to that office is wholiy undisputed, we are com. to believe that Judge Cartter'’s are mistaken. The sac news of the probable death of Sen- ator Morton's eldest son has been kept from the sepator for nearly ten day’s past, owing to bis critical condition and the well- grounded fear that @ fatal result would ensue in case it was communicated to him. The | senator has always been a close and apprect- Slive newspaper reader, and during his ill- ness, when unable to read bimself, he has had the dally journals read tohim. Nor is be said to be content with this. If he has reasou to believe that the reader has omitted anything of interest, he demands the paper bimself, and fn» case apy paragraph has been cut ont fnsists upon seeing it. It ts therefore more than likely that it will be impossible to keep the sad news from bim very long, and when he is once made aware of his b-reaye- ment the worst may be feared. It is tobe re. etied that the news of young Morton’s probable death could not have been sup- Pressed until the condition of the senator had 0 much improved that be would have been able to bear the shock. THe Srar has been in the possession of the news for over a week past, but has refrained from giving it pub- Heity for obvious reasons. Now that the New York Tribune bas done so, and allusion is made to the matter in a dispatch from Ricbmond, Indiana, we publish the report in Question in another column. The announcement of the hopeless illness of E. L. Davenport, the actor, will be heard With regret by bis thousands of admirers. A polished actor, who cared more for fidelity to the strict requirements of his art than for popular applause, Mr. Davenport held a bigh post of honor on the modern stage, and Will leave but few equals among his cotem- Pporaries. Although he has not yet reached the sixth age which “shifts into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,” he hag attained more than the average age of mortals, being in his sixty-second year. General Badeau, our Consul General at London, bas been making a ninny of him- Self in tie decoration business. He denies that he bas ever worn the insignia of the So- ciety of the Cincinnati, for the very good Teason that he does not belong tolt, and says he has worn no decoration exeept those in- dicating his connect with the United States volunteor army during the rebellion.
