Below we print a table showing the polit!- cal complexion of the next Senate, which meets in special session on the 15th of Octo- ber proximo. It will be seen from this that that body will be pretty evenly divided as regards politics, and that, in any event, the republican majority will be much smaller than ithas been for years past. Although Senator Davis, of Illinois, is classed in the table as an independent republican, he is claimed as a republican, pure and simple, and has been placed upon the standing com. mittees of the Senate as such. The follow- ing shows the composition of the Senate— republicans being printed in Roman, dem crats in italics, and the independent repubil- can in small capitals—also the expiration of the term of each. Howe... 1s The table it will be seen foots up —repu li cans, 39; democrats. 33; and independent re- publicans, 1. On the meeting of the Senate im October there wil! be three vacancie:,— one from South Carolina caused by the re- Urement of Senator Robertson, and two from Louisiana, one being the vacancy caused by the retirement of Senator West, and the other being known as the Pinchback vacancy, which bas existed for four or five years past. The applicants for the South Carolina va- cancy ars David T. Corbin, republican, and M.C. Butler, democrat. The applicants for the two Louisiana vacancies are William Pitt Kellogg, republican, and J. B. Eustis and James Lewis, democrats. In view of the overthrow of the republican government, in @ party sense, in those states it is safe to Predict that all these vacancies will be filled by democrats. This would give the demo- ¢rats 36 members in the Senate. Should the seat of the republican Senator from Indiana become vacant his place would be filled by & democrat, probably by Voorhes or Hen- dricks, when the Senate would stand, count- ing David Davis with the republicans—re- publicans, 39; democrats, 37. A few casual- ties occurring among the republican Sen: tors frora Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, aad several other states would result in giving the Senate to the democrats by a fair majority. Taat they will have such a majority in the Senate after March 3, 1579, is almost certain. There is at least one advantage in a pretty even division of either house of Congress, and that 1s tn the raore punctual attendance of mem- bers and their closer attention to public busi- ess. | ———_—__-<+<--_______ | The New York Witness has been discontin- | ued.
