This effort should not be successful,—at least not on the grounds assigned, nor on account of any facts which appear in this particular case. There is no reason, in the first place, why men of “fair intelligence and education” may not became the most con- firmed, depraved and dangerous of tramps. On the contrary, they are apt to be very Worst of their class on their ins incts turn their steps in that direct again | there is nothing in the record of this man’s Wanderings, so far as we a showed him to be in th deserving of sympathy or aid during his life | time. His diary sets forth with considerable fullness his daily and nightly experiences, where and how he slept, re he got food, and, perbaps more important than all, where he was supplicd with whiskey;—but, signifi- cantly enough, there is nota single word in it to show that he ever earnestly and in good faith applied any where for work. There is, to be sure, in one day’s entry a remark that he was told he could get work at Gree: im the next that he “walked to Greensburg, but got no work;” but no reason is assigned for not getting !t—whether there was no work to be had,—whether the wages didn’t suit, or whether he really didn’t apply for it;—no expression of disappointment at his hard fate in being refused employment and obliged to beg for the necessaries of life, in- Stead of being able to earn a livelihood by honest toil and thus become once more—if he ever had been—a respectable and self-respect- ing citizen. His whole walk appears, in- deed, to have been along the main routes of travel, and generally in the vicinity of if not actually upon the great railway lines, and never once touched the rural districts proper, where willing intelligent labor is nearly al- Ways needed for the cultivation of the land | and the care and gathering of the various ctops, and where a decent man who is dis- posed to work canat all times escape actual Want. It is clear from this man’s own story, that, even though he is dead, he cannot be made into a hero. ———-~+e-—___. The managers of the republican party may ‘BOt See it, or, like the boy passing the grave- yard, they may be whistling to keep their courage up, but at present all the tadications are that Obio will go democratic this fall by from 15,000 to 20,000 majority. It is possible that a reaction may set in before the election Comes off, and that the republicans may be able to hold the state by a slight majority, but in any event it is a settled thing that Mr. Matthews cannot be re-elected to the Senate. re -___ The statement is made that there are 25.000 more Indians on the continent than there Were when the country was first setiled. “An experienced Indian officer” is credited with this statement, which is ridiculously a- wurd. Itseems to be based on the fact that Uie government rations more Indians now than it did in former years. Tuts is quite true, and as an instance it may be stated that ten years ago the government did not issue rations to the Sioux, who number 35,000 or 40.000 souls. But this does not prove that the Indians have actually increased. On the contrary, indications point to thefr slow but steady reduction in numbers. The ninth census is authority for the statement that the number of civilized Indians de- creased from 44,021 in 1560 to 25,731 in 1870. If ‘Unis large decrease took place in a single de- cade among Indians set down as civilized, the reduction in numbers must have been much larger in proportion among the wild tribes, who for years have been decimating their ranks by wars among themselves and With the whites. As an American institu. Uon, we fear the red man is nota perma- mency. —— +202- —____ Notwithstanding the ery of hard times and Scarcity of money, the statistics of the New York city savings banks show that a good many people are notonly earning but saving Money. During the last six months the num. ber of depositors in them has largely in- creased, and as compared with the footings of a year ago those of the Ist of July ult. show an increase in the amonnt of deposits Of Si719,10. Evidently things might be Worse, bad as they are. -+s-- The telegraph stock manipulators give as One reason for practically consolidating the two rival companies the fact that it has heretofore cost them from 60 to 70 per cent. of their receipts to carry on their business, ‘whereas under the new arrangement the ex- perses can be reduced to 50 per cent. of the Sross receipts. This is probably true; and as both companies claim that they made money, and that business was rapidly in- creating under the low rates recently cbarged, there would logieally seem to be DBothing left forthe new management to do Bow but to stili further reduce the cost of Velegrapbing from 10 to 15 per cent., and thus give the public the benefit of the great re- duction in expenses. But the very reverse Of this will happen. The whole operation is plainly a mere skin game, intended to gouge the public, both by higher prices and poorer serv ce. — —— It will soon become a question with hotel Suesw whether they had not better take the .
