Sitting Bull brought with him over the border rather an unsavory Teputation and, according to a iate report, bis warriors make no secret of their inten- tion to return to the Yellowstone Valley after they have recuperated, and renew their War against the whites. The trouble seems to be that there is no treaty stipulation which prohibits the Indians from either side crossing the border at will, and consequently moral suasion is the only means that can be employed to effect the removal of Sitting Bull from his present camping ground. Gen. Sherman is represented as saying that he thinks the Canadian government will be responsible for depredations which they may commit if they effect a permanent lodgement on British territory and make raids across the border, which is rather rough on the Canadians, considering that Sitting Bull and his band are unwelcome guests. The Commissioner of Indiau Affairs looks upon the presence of these Indians just over the boundary line as a standing menace, and perbaps it is best in justice to our Canadian neighbors, with whom we are on friendly terms, that a commission be sent out to in- duce them to return to their reservation in the United States. Sitting Ball is tooshrewd & savage statesman and warrior not to un- derstand the responsibility he has incurred, and will not probably be induced to come back without the most solemn assurances of fmmunity from punishment. It remains to be seen whether our government is prepared to grant him such immunity. —+<+2-—____ Underground telegraphy is not very popu- jar with telegraph companies, probably because of its expense, which is said to be six times as great as the pole system, since great pains must be taken to protect the wires. Germany has seven lines of underground telegraph from Berlin to the western frontier, and all of them work well. A shert under- ground line is now being laid in Philadel- 8 5 — aie The democratic convention at Richmond yesterday finally fixed upon their next gov- ernor—the nomination of Colonel Holliday being, of course, equivalent to his election. The nomination was something of a sur prise, many feeling confident that, in case of the failure of General Mahone, Mr. Daniel ‘Would be selected. But political conventions are very uncertain things, and wagers cin- not be laid upon their action with safety. Colonel Holliday has never taken a very active part in polities. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and at preseatis @ practising lawyer at Winchester, in the Shenandoah Valley. He is forty-eight years of age. He served in the confederate army as @ colonel In the celebrated “ Stonewall Brigade,” and is said to be very popular in the valley. He was in 1564a member of the confederate congress, and during the last Presidentia! campaign was a Tilden elector. He is represented as being strongly in favor cf maintaining the credit of his state, though be would favor any weil-devised scheme for the readjustment of the public debt. ——_ore-___. The Americans do not lack for revolu- tionary anniversaries to celebrate. Some one has been bunting up notable events occurring one hundred years ago, and finds that on the 16th of August the battle of Beu- nington took place; September 5, the first Congress met in Philadelph: September 19, the battle of Saratoga occurred, Septem- ber 20, the massacre at Paoli, P October 4, battle of Germantown, Pa.; October 6, cap- ture of Forts Clinton and Montgomery; October 7, second battle of Saratoga; No vember 11, Washington retired to Valiey Forge. ++22- The long silence of Keely, the new motor man, is at last explained. He has been en- gaged for over a year in the construction of a machine weighing twenty tons, and costing 260,000, to generate the new force he claims to have discovered. The ‘Keely Motor Com- pany seem to have confience in the import- ance of the discovery, and invite scientists, machinists, and learned societies to come nd make every test they can think of. Cold Water and alr are the only elements used to generate this mysterious force. If Mr. Keely ‘will kindly show how his discovery can be put to practical use he will indeed prove himself a public benefactor. ~ ———————-<re-_ The following, from the New York Tribune Of the 10th, may be of interest in Washing- ton in connection with one of the pavements recently laid on Pennsylvania avenue: “A year or two ago there was a lively dis- ute about the strip of concrete pavement in ront of the Worth Monument on 5th avenue. Mr. Eto charged in letters to The Tribune that its pretense of durability was a hum- bug, and that it was only Kept in good order by the care of the patentees, who watched every bruise. and stealthily patched it be- tween midnight and morning. Destruction of property isto be deprecated at all times; but if the next oat- break of oppressed workingmen will turn their attention to Wall street and raze to the ground and sow in salt that source of nearly ail their hardships they will do a much bet- ter days work for themselves and the coun- try at large than in burning down round houses and elevators, and destroying en- Sines, freight cars, and railway tracks. +se0e- It is announced with something of a flour- ish that Miss Kellogg is going to devote the profits of her coming tour ta California to Chief Joseph has no notion of emulating the example of Sitting Bull and fleeing to British territory, for, 1f reports are correct, RABE CHANCE KNIGHTS ILLUSTRATED, SHAKSPEARE: com plete 'n £6 pr $25; will sel! for $20; Just Sat, inquire at Btore, B22?
