Although our government has received no official adviers on the subject, there is reason to believe that there is some truth in the report that the American flag has been hotst- ed at Simoa and lie; lance tendered to the Uni ed States. Commodore Wilkes, of the United States navy, surveyed the islands in 189, and, by arrargement with the native chiefs, tock the harbor of Pango Pango, one Of the safest and best harbors in the Pac‘fic, un ler the protection of this country. In 1875 President Grant sent a special agent named A. B. Steinburger to the islands, who repre- sented that the chiefs were desirous that the whole group should be protected by the United States, but in 1-75 a native King was elected, and Stetnburger became his prime minister. The Samoan group, which in- cludes nine islands, embracing an area of 1,125 square miles, and having @ population of about 37,900, is located in the South Pacific ‘about 400 miles northeast of the Fejee isl- ands. The islands are of volcanic forma- tion and are picturesque and mountainous, some of the elevations being 5,000 feet high. The Labor League no doubt meant well in adoptirg @ resolution requesting the Dis- | trict Commissioners to borrow $20,000 to enable them to employ two thousand suffering laboring men of the District on public improvements, but as the Commis- sioners are positively forbidden, by act of Congress, to increase the debt of the District, they cannot give the relief asked for, no mat- ter how much they may sympathize with the unemployed workmen. Any practicable and legal method of relief would undoubtedly | be approved by them and our citizens gene- | rally. -<e- Senater Biainc, with his keen political Sagacity, cut the Gordian knot very cleverly at Augusta yesterday. when two resolutions, one indorsing and the other opposing the a1- ministration, were submitted to the state re- publican convention for action. Under the circumstances the convention acted wisely in adopting bis suggestion that both resolu- tions be laid on the table. Had this not been done a lively scene would doubtiess have oc- curred. as the convention was supposed to be pretty equally divided in sentiment as regards the Prasident’s policy. Tae hard of Mr. Blaine is seen, however, in the plat. form of resolutions aiopted by the conven- tion, e=pecially in the tenth proposition that “the States of South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana were fairly and legally carried by the republicans the November election, 176, for state and national! tickets,” &¢. This amounts to a virtual condemnation of the President for his action in deposing Packard in Louisiana, and Chamberlain in South Carolina. Surely, there are more Waysthan Ove of whipping bis Satanic majesty around the stump, and this time we think a big one may be scored for Mr. Blaine. ——— ee The attitude of the republican party tn Onto on the labor question perplexes the New York republican leaders who have about be- come convinced that some notice of the same fubject must be taken at their approaching State convention. A powerful element is said to be at work quietly to so influence the primary elections as to secure a hearing for the workingmen there, and Thurlow Weed and his friends say it will not do to give the cold shoulder to that element. Tne demo- erats are also fishing for the workingmen’s votes, but opposed by such a political ex- pert as Weed it is by no means certain that ihey will be able to capture n.
