In THE STAR of Monday the following Paragraph appeared. “If our Schuetzenfest friends will take a word of advice they will refrain from flauat- ing the red rag in the faceof the religious community of Washington as they did last night (Sunday) by illuminating weir picto- rial and mottoed advertising arch at the con- spicuous corner of 7th street and Pennsylva- Dia avenue. A great many people who are not bigots on the lager question, do object to this sort of bravado against the opinions of those who believe in the proper observance Of the Christian Sabbath.” In his speech at the closing of the Schuet- zenfest last night Recorder Wolf, afier deal ing with the attacks of the temperance peo- ple upon the fest, proceede! to refer, as quoted elsewhere, to the above suggestion by THESTAR. With the acrimonious fight on the temperance we do not propose to meddle just here, further than to express the opinion that, as a temperance measare, it is @ great the national beverage of Germany could not be substituted in this country for the more fiery, intoxicating and demoralizing drinks in use. In the matter of THE STAR suggestion and Mr. Wolfs com- ments we have but a worl. It Is very kind and tolerant of Mr. Wolf to say that he does not wage war upon Christians and Christianity, and it is liberal in him to concede that there are really estimable and conscientious Christians, both “men and women.” He should carry his toleration of the still rather large number of believers in Christ to the extent of conceding some- thing totheir lamentable, and bigoted, but Possibly honest prejudices against the dis play of triumphal! arches on the Caristian Sabbath, adverusing, with {lluminated pictures, the joys and attraciions of that place, where, to quote from Mr. Wolf, “those citizens who at other tines and places seem to be virtuous and sober, throw off their White robes and taunt turough the shady mazes, aim in arm, with their fallen Chris- tian sisters.” It is undoubtedly true, as claimed. that the Schuetzen Vercin warmly reprobate the scenes witnessed nightly at the Schuetzenfest, but as they admittedly did occur, pot only this year but on previous years, it would be well for Mr. Wolf not to be too hard on the bigoted Christians, wno possibly on account of their “fallen sisters,” object to the display of the tlluminated pic- torial advertisements of the fest on Sanday. Finally we have to say, that, from abundant information, we ale satisfied that a large Proportion of the best German citizens of Washington, including many, if not most, of the members of the Verein, cordially endorse the moderate and kindly meant sugges- tion made by Tus Star on Monday. The Sehneizen Verein is composed of excellent, thoroughly respected citizens, who have no disposition to array themselves in oppost- tion to the Christian sentiment of the com- munity. The ‘liuminated display of the ad- vertising arch Sunday nicht was simply a mistake on the part of whoever caused it, and is not likely to be repeated. BRailreads and Real Estate. According to @ statement in the Boston Post of s11 ratlroads in the United S:ae< only I bave paid a dividend in the pas’ year. The amount of money invested by the people in the stock of these enterprises, in anticipation of a living income from their Investments, must reach into hundreds of Malllion dollars. A like result has attended the investment of money tn the stock of thousands of other and different corpora- tions. We believe that jwticious investments in real ¢state in substaniial asl growing American cities have always been among the Surest sources of individual prosperity. Real property is the foundation of all rnonied Wealth. In some cities the spirit of specula ton caused inflated prices, but we believe that property in Washington was less in- Hated and has held its own better than tn any other metropolis in the country. The growth and prosperity of Washington is as- sured from the fact that it is the capital of our whole country of 45,000,000 of inhabitants, and as the business of the nation increases— as it is continuously doing—its effect upon the progressive interests of the national capt- tal ts direct and enduring. It is with pleasure that we chronicle adecided increase in the daily transfer of Washington real estate, for it is one of the healthiest signs of returning confidence and prosperity. To secure a Lome is the safest of all invest- ments. ——+ore-—_____ All Of the railroad buildings at Pittsburg. destroye! by the mob a few weeks ago, are to be rebuilt. This will probably give tem. porary employment to some of the very par. ties who were instrumental in the work of Straction. This recalls the f ers found matter of ton in the fae that the rebuilding op-rations would give employment te many poor people needing Work. Such reasoning ts very superficial. The most ignorant among the riotous strikers should have known that it was tllogical to ask for bigher wages and then, by the whole. sale destruction of property, to diminish the financial capacity of the railroad company to accede to their deman: —-<-e-__ The frequent oceurrence of hydrophobia in ane case of y ebildren must finally coa- Vince the most incredulous of the reality of Jaty. The government should aio i.sist that every male adult perform some kind of la- bor in return for his rations.
