EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY............3aly 28, 1877. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.,,,....Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page, 5 are FUEL. and best fuel fer, cogking purposes woather 1s COKE, ‘also valuable for rp: ses. Now that here is a presp-ct of con- of coal im the market in consequence it would be well linued scarcity can: pers ne wishing cheap fuel to Fat the office of the GAS LIGHT COMPANY. No, 413 loth street Sold at the recent low rate at $2. 8S for a load of northwest. Still for load of forty. twenty-five bushcle delivered are hare withis the Average srorn Daily Circulation over 17,500,—being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Wash- ington, ond more than that of all the others added together. The turbulent week closes with tndications ofageneral collapse of the great ratlroad Strike. All the great trunk roads west have resumed the ranning of freight trains; and thongh, ro doubt, there will be Isolated exhi- bitions of the strike spirit for some time to | come, It has evidently lost Its force as a co- Operative national movement. If the rail- road companies are wise they will not pur- sue their trinmph over the strikers in apy harsh vindictive temper. On the contrary \° they should seek to show that they have a kindly tnterest in the welfare of the hum- blest of their hard-working employes by 1 ring into thelr grievances and applying @ remedy. The history of the present strike bas shown that in the case of some of the railroad boards they had not tle slightest idea of the degree of suffering which te ten per cent. reduction would bring the {feight firemen who work only halftime. As @ matter of fact they had a more definite ac- quaintance and more sympathy with the hungry people of India and China than they bad with their own employes, compelled to Support themselves upon scant rations of corn bread and molasses. The Wrong Way and the Right Way. ‘The railroad strikers put themselves in a Talse position by undertaking forcibly to Stop the running of ratiroad trains; and they have thus managed to array the whole law and order sentiment of the country against them for the time being. Their best course is to get out of this false attitude at once, and plant themselves inside of law and good gov- ernment, and make their grievances heard through the press and the ballot box. The public is already in a mood to put restric tions upon the further grasp of power by the great railroad monopoliesof the country. There is a growing sense of alarm at the enormous strength and infinence attained by these great companies, and there is a feeling throughout the country that these monster corporations that control state legis- latures and mould congressional action at will are dangerous to republican instita- tions. With this feeling existing, the labor- ing men, wronged by the exactions of rail- rom! boards, will have the people of the country with them in any action, within the taw, for their redress. It is @ notorious fact that the railroad corporations of the country dictate very largely who shall be elected to Congress or to state legislatures. In the future it is pretty certain that the people will Jook into this matter, and that the nominees of the ratiroad corporations wili stand much less chance of getting into legislative bo- dies. ——_——_ -+e2-- The paving companies still maintain their | sickening nuisances on B street, and the authorities seem to wink at the matter with philosophic complacency. We hear that with the prevailing southerly wind the em- ployes of the Pension Ufice (Shepherd build- ing) are obliged to work with their windows closed, excluding every breath of air this suffocating hot weather, in order to shut out this unendurable stench. If our Board of Health would suspend their petty squabbles about office, mail contracts, night-soll jobs, &c., &c., long enough to abate a patent nuis- ance of this sort, they would stand better with the public. 202+ In referring to the refusal of Vice President King, ofthe Baltimore and Ohio ratlroad to accede to the terms of bis late employes, we yesterday stated that he didnot take into consideration the fact that the price of provi sions, clothing, rents, &c., have not yet been reduced to ante-bellum figures. A state- ment. evidently carefully prepared, showing the relative wholesale prices of articles of general consumption in 1861 and 1877. demon- Strates the truth of the assertion. Flour now is about the same as In 1861, as is pork, but corn meal, wheat, corn, bacon, sugar, coffee, leather, and wool are considerably higher. Thesame may be said of market Provisions, such as mutton, beef, lamb, veal, Potatoes, butter, eggs, &c. Take the article Of beef which in 156i was from sto 18 cents Per pouud, and is now put down at from 12 to 2 cents. An expenditure of #25 then for beef at the average price of 13 cents per id secure 1924-13 pounds, while x pounds could be bought for the same mouey. In other words it would now require $00.77 to purchase the same amount of beef which could be bought in 1361 for $23. SEES TOPS a EEE Mob law must be put down, promptly, decisively, but the fact must at the same time be Kept in mind, that with unparal- lelled plenty of bread in the land, there never were So many hungry, unemployed peopie. It ts the duty of philanthropy and intelligent citizenship to consider at once how these mouths are to be filled, and these idle but Willing bands employed. Fo THE HOT WEATHER. CLOTH ALPACAS. This force can be followed a fortnight after- j ward by 56,500 men, and within a month | these two corps can be joined by a force of 40,000 men from India.
