' EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY ....00..04....-3uly 24, 1977. CROSBY 8S. HOYES... Reading Matter on Every Page. A worn Laily Circulation over 17,500,—'¢ing more than three times that of any other daily paper in Wash- ington, and more than that of all the others added together. ‘The Suprem of Law Must be Main- as ney Sined. ‘There is undoubted sympathy for the class of railroad employes whose pay has been re- duced to less than one dollar per cay, and when their grievances can be gonsidered separate from the imperative present neces. sity to suppress mob rule, there is no doubt that public sentiment will be potent enough to compel @ redress of their wrongs. But the duty of the hour is to quell anarchy, restore the supremacy of law, and establish the fact Of the stability of our civil government under republican institutsoas beyond doubt. It is for the Interests of the laboring men themselves that there should be a prompt end to scenes of riot, violence and destruc- ton like those at Pittsburg, where the law- less element took advantage o/ the situation for the perpetration of their own scaemes of plunder and deviltry. Every car destroyed put several railroad n out of em- ployment, and the destruction of rail- road property threw thousanis of labor- ing men out of employment in Pitts- burg, not directly employed upon the trains Again, the loss from this great destruction of property does not fall upon the railroad com. pany t nder the law, upon the tax-payers of Alles county, Pennsylvania, and mainly Pitts. burg. yed is estimated ali the way from two to four million dollars in value, but even at the smallest sum, it is easy to see th ) of taxation upon that comr this assessment for riot damages will be a fearfully heavy ona. Deeds cf mob incendlarism, pillage and murder of the kind perpetrated at Pittsburg are so repugnant to the great body of the American people that the universal senti- Ment is for the full vindication of law and order. This done, i: will concededly be a public duty to give thoughtful and earnest consideration of the question how the un- doubted grievances of the laboring men can be remedied There are indications that the Now York democratic politicians have entered Into a combination to defeat Randall as Speaker of the next House, with a view of getting this plum for Mr. Cox or Mr. Wood. The New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger thinks the double-leaded shot in the New York Evening Frpress against Randall Presents internal evidence that It was writ- ten by Mr. Cox himself,as it is in his vein shroughoul, and says this demonstration is to be followed by others of the same char- acter. ————_--«ee- The last number of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal has an article upon “Insanity and the Revival” by Theodore W. Fisher, M. I}., in whieb reports are given of eight cases of insanity that have come under his observation during the past two months, Which were caused by undue religious ex- ellement growing out of the Moody and San- Key revival. lr. Fisher says it would not be fair to attribute all these and similar cases to the effects of revival preaching, but the presumption in shat direction is very Strong. An examination of sixty reports of asylums in the U: nited States in 176 shows that out of 36,93 cases 2,145 were produced by Feligious excitement. In conclusion Dr. Fisher remarks: “It is needless to add that true religion does not in itselftend to produce insenity, but is the best moral preventive and antidote; but it is the false theology and Superstition too often mingled in the relig- tous instruction and urged apon ignorant and susceptible minds, with vehemence and implied threats of Divine anger, that are lia- ble to disturb an already too unstable men- tal equilibrium.” -s0-- General French probably owes his being relieved of command in West Virginia to his Somewhat irrascible temper. A veteran sol- dier of the old school, he can brook no dicta- tion from inferiors in rank or from ciyil- jans, and in bis late accrimonious discus- Sion with the master of transportation of the Baltimore and Obio railroad ge doubtless believed that as the commanding officer of the troops sent to guard that road, he had the right and authority to move his soldiers wherever he chose. There are many others Who took the same view of the matter at the ume. ——_—__-<e--—______ The conduct of the militia in Pittsburg on Sunday last in leaving some ot their wound- ed comrades behind in the round house to Perish in the flames deserves the severest Feprehension, and they should all be sent bome to their mothers to be corrected with a slipper. But few of the young men who be- come members of nuilitia regiments enter them with any expectation of ever being called into active service where their metal Will be tested, and where they will be re- quired to be soldiers in reality as well as in bame. The action of the strikers in Harris- burg yesterday in capturing about thirty Philadelphia militiamen, and taking them to the hotels and giving them something to €at, shows the contempt in which they hold these holiday Saniee When last heard ‘rom Ge eneral § Sherman Was in the far west on a summer tour. As General of the Army, his presence and coun- Bel are needed in Washington at this juncture of affairs, an a0 on hearing the news from the east he will doubtless see the propriety of returning at ouce to his headquarters tn this city. New York is pretty well prepared with Citizen soldiery (at least on paper) In case they are needed to quell domestic disorders. The state militia is made up of one regiment and ten separate troops of cavalry, one bat- talion and eleven separate batteries of artil- lery. and twenty-five regiments, twelve bat- talions aLd seven separate companies of in- fantry. The total number of the personnel ts 1,505 commissioned officers and 17.90% non- uissioned officers, musicians, rank and thus forming an aggregate force of 19,413 upon. +02 - There are no reports to-day of bloodshed or destruction of Property In connection with the railroad disturbances in any quarter, but the strikers have now full possession at 8t.
