The late vVietory achieved by our troops near the Mouth of the Cottonwood, was rather a costly one, but, as General McDowell believes, it Will have @ salutary influence on the other Indians, who were waiting in their war paint to join Chief Joseph should his first general engagement with the federal troops result adversely to the latter. As it is, they will DOW probably keep on their reservations and remain peaceable. Tne Indian loss is set down as thirteen killed and many wounded, but their actual loss doubtless exceeds this Sgure, as they invariably carry off as many of their dead and wounded as possible, in order to deceive the enemy as to the extent of their casuaities. It is not surprising that General Howard should admit that the In- dians fought as well as any troops he ever saw. They are a comparatively {otelligent people, and until the late outbreak many of them were largely engaged ta pastoral pur- suits, and possessed large herds of sheep and cattle. They are well armed, and Chief Jo- seph having avowed his intention of fighting to the death, General Howard has yet con- siderable bard work abead. Secretary Schurz shows himself as prompt in practice as be is adept tn theory. In his expressed determination to unearth any cor- ruption or fraudulent practices which may exist in the Indian or any other bureau of his department, he will havé the support and approbation of all honest men. Let him ply the knife fearlessly when be finds a rot- ten brancb, and the country will sustain bim. —__++ee- In a communication to the Washington STAR it is stated with unnecessary emphasis that the Battle of Bemnington” was tought in the town of Hoosick, state of New York, near the town of Bennington and the Ver- mont state line. Now, the less said about that the better, for it will take half the charm a@Way if all who celebrate the battle of Ben- nington know that Vermont has to go into New York state to get material for a centen- nial.—{ Boston Post. As Vermont was not one of the confeder- ated colonies and as Bennington, as well as Hoosick, was at the time in New York, it doesn’t make so very much difference. The main fact remains, however, that the Green Mountain boys displayed such sturdy valor throughout the war for independence that they, or their descendants, have a right to celebrate to their heart's content at Benning- ton, Hubbardton, or wherever they choose. —__-+02--____ We bave a complaint that thestreet sweep ing contractors in sweeping Pennsylvania avenue fail to water the street adequately, and the result is that clouds of dust are raised which penetrate into busiuess places and private residences, causing damage to goods and discomfort to the residents, and business men. The street sweepers are doing their work satisfactorily, otherwise, we be- Neve, and doubtless they will readiiy supply aremedy to the grievance mentioued, uow that their attention is called to it — a The great expectations of what wouli be done in benalf of Turkey by the sanguinary Circassians and Bashi Bazouks prove like- ly to pan out as badly as did the kindred ex- pectations as to the havoc to be made upon the rebel ranks by the “fighting zouaves,” Wilson's crop-headed New York ruftiaas, and the Philadelphia fire boys, ia our war of the rebellion. According to the late reports from Erzerum a large troop of the Circas- sians bebaved so mutinously before going to the front, and showed such a disposition to repeat in Armenia the atrocities perpetrated in Bulgaria, that when nearly the whole bedy was cut down by the Russians the Turkish officials were glad to be rid of them. The Irish Catholic Union of Montreal de. serve commendation for their resolutions condemning the raffians who participated in the riots on the 12th instant. It is well to re- member that the clergy on both sides did all im their power to prevent bloodshed, bat that it was beyond their power to restrain turbulent roen from deeds of violence on the Occasion referred to. An important item of New York news is the fact of an extraordinary demand for our mew wheat crop on European account. The eablegrams for the last week have ordered purchases to the enormous aggregate of nearly two miilion bushels. Parties most conversant with the grain trade believe that | * there is something about this movement which is not apparent on the surtace. It is considered certain that the purchasers on the other side must have some information con- cerning the war of a kind to convince them | that it is zoing to be protracted, and will in. Volve other countries besides Turkey and | Russia. At is said that no less than six California | pastors preached sermons on the subject of “Bob Ingersoll” in one day, all of which Was a good “ ad” for Robert. eee oe While Senator Conkling is away up in the mountains of Scotland in pursuit of bealth bis countrymen are speculating as to his course in the Senate at its next session. It would be a somewhat remarkable thing to te the New York Senator and his ancient « -my, Mr. Blaine, working shoulder to Bh. — in an effort to make the President odio. =; but stranger things have happened. As the Senator's term expires two years henee « d he is not averse toa re-election, the asser“'on may be ventured that he will take uo p.mounced ground for or against the Presider :’s policy, unless he is assured that he will be sustained by more than a few sorcheads of bis state. ——<+e-—___ It is hard for anybody but a Maryland pol- itician to understand the ins and outs of the long-standing squabble over the Baltimore appoimtments, but as we have heretofore used the substance of a statement made by ex-President Grant that seemed to charge upon Mr. Fulton, ef the Baltimore American, “misrepresentations” of the facts in the case of the Baltimore collectorship, it is proper to say that ex-Postmaster General Jewell confirms the statement of Mr. Fulton as to President Grant's declaration of a purpose to appoint Thomas collector should Booth resign.
