While the democrats may for purposes of political capital bereafter be inclined to press the indictment against members of the Louisiana returning board for frauds and forgeries, and while sore headed republicans may be disposed to rejoice over the introduc- tion of this disturbing element to the work- Ing of the President's pacification policy, it is pretty certain that In no quarter is there a&ny expectation that any effort will be made to unseat President Hayes, as the result of a conviction of the parties indicted. The Alexandria Gazette doubUess expresses the views of the democrats and conservatives of the south, and of the whole country tn say- ibg that he whole beard might be con- victed and imprisoned, or hung if deemed advisable, for the heinous crime of robbing @ State of its vote, without adding one {ota to the defect in Mr. Hayes’s title to the Presi- dency. That defect was as apparent to Mr. Hayes when he was inaugurated as to any one else, but the electoral commission de- cided that everything beyond the return was @liunde, so had the board frandulently altered the returns of every parish in the state, in- stead of the few everybody knows they did alter, it would have made no difference in the award of the immortal Eight, and Mr. Hayes would have been President by as good @ title as that by which he now hold his office.” -s02- The Medical Society of Washington at their meeting last night effectually disposed of the sensation story sent out by a Wash- ington correspondent of the New York Herald, about a terrible epidemic prevailing in this city. The Society brand the report as ‘false in every particular,” and declare that, “ac- cording to the observations of our oldest pro- fessional men, we have had an unprecedent- ed healtby period, embracing the past six months, all classes of citizens, children in- cluded, enjoying a remarkable freedom from disease, as attested by the experience of every practitioner of medicine here.” It is to be hoped that the papers who have copied the sensation story referred to, will publish this denial. ———_-<<«2-_____ The manner in which L'eutenant Rains and eleven men under his command met their death in Idaho the other day vividly recalls the horrors of the Custer massacre. It seems that this little party formed the ad- vance guard of Colonel Whipple, and when some distance abead were attacked by supe- rior numbers. It would also seem that when attacked, instead of remembering that dis- cretion isthe better part of valor and re- treating, they continued to fight until every one of the devoted band was slain. It is urged as the excuse why Colonel Whipple did not hasten to the relief of Lieutenant Rains that his command could not hear the firing, in which case the lieutenant must bave been a mile or two in advance of the main body. At any rate General Howard will do well to investigate the whole unfor- tunate affairand see where the blame lies. Public sentiment will also demand the in- vestigation of the conduct of Colonel Perry, who refused for an hour and a half to go to the rescue of Captain Randall, commanding sixteen volunteers, who were attacked by one bundred and fifty Indians. The dis- patches state that Colonel Perry's command was in plain sight of Captain Randall's party, and that he was urged to send troops tohis relief. His reply is reported to have been that “It was no use, as they (meaning Randall's party) were gone.” An hour and a half later he did send troops to the rescue, but not until Captain Randal! and another of the party bad been Killed and several others wounded. Notwithstanding General How- ard’s rose-colored dispatches it looks as if there was mismanagement somewhere in the conduct of thecampaign in Idaho. When it is considered that our forces are fighting but a handful of Indians,it must be ad- mitted that oar losses thus far have been altogether too large. Severe thunder storms and destructive tornadoes have prevailed all of the country for @ week past. In localities where the farmers are in the midst of harvest the fre- quent heavy rainsdoubtless interfere greatly With the gathering of grain and hay, but still there is a compensating consideration in the fact that they are generally beneficial to the growing crops In the cities the rains are not unwelcome, since they act as a powerful cleansing agent, purifying the atmosphere, and improving the sanitary condition of communiti Pres® dent Hinckley, of the Philadelphia, Wilmington « Baltimore railroad, who al- Ways manages to be at variance with some some one, is having a war with the Dela- Ware aud Maryland peach growers. The lattter ask—first, a reduction in freight in accordance with the finaneial shrinkage on all values, second, that no discriminative tarit!s in favor of any route or routes be laid, but rather that no artificial measures be un influence prices, leaving 'o the markets and growers unre- strictest y to settle the supply; third, that the chartered car system be retained. President Hinckley deelines to accede to these requets. As showing the increase of the pench trade he states that the number of cars, used to transport the fruit in 1834, was jess than 1,50), while in 1575 in was more tnap 9.600. - 202 -—_____ The charge against Cashier Guthrie, an | old and tried officer of the United States Treasury, looks trivial if not malicious. If *« ‘tof office hours he rendered valuable as- S..'ance to the District authorities, it was but: “tht and jast that he should be compen- sSatea orhisservices. It is therefore satis- factory ‘o know that Assistant Secretary French ses not regard the charge made against M-. Guthrie as requiring further in- vestigation +202- New York bas 7,-74 liquor dealers, and of these but 2.176 have a license. This shows rather a loose administration of affairs. Over 5,000 dealers are thas daily incurring penalties which the law devotes to the sup- Port of the city’s charities, and which would Suffice to pay the entire expense ef those charities, but of which apparently not a dol- lar ts collected. The wholesale assassination of government Witnesses in Alabama, reported im to-day’s STAR, is a disgrace to the state, which noth- ing short of prompt panishment of the mur- derers to the fall extent of the law can wipe out. If the appeal of the civilized world for Justice on the assassins is met with the same ndifference as in the case of the Kemper county massacre in Mississippt, no one will have moreoceasion to regret the consequences Than the people of those states. ———— The Virginia papers are in a stave of ‘mind over the question who shall be gover. nor. They fairly bristle in all their colamns ‘With articles favoring or denouncing this or that candidate. Among those urged are General Mahone, (the Virginia railroad king;) General Taliaferro, (pronounced Tbii- ver:) General J. A. Walker; General Fitz Lee, (son of General Robert E. Lee;) Coloue: ¥. W.
