The Contest in Ohio. Itseems to be conceded that the contest at the coming election in Ohio will be very close, and the republicans are looking about for an available candidate for goveraor. Several of the leading republican papers seem to center upon ex-Governor Deunison as the man combining the most elements of strength for a winning candidate. The Steu benville Herald speaks of Upson, Lee and Bingham, as having only a local following, and says that Taft has withdrawn, and tha’ “the man for the hour” Is ex-Governor Wil- Ham Dennison. “An able an accomplished orator,” that paper says,‘‘a thorough gen- tleman. an eneyclopedia of historical facts and figures,a man of pleasing and popular address, and withal, an honest man, he will inspire the people from the lakes to the Ohio river with the confidence of assured vietory-”” We presume the order known as Oranze- men has just as good a right to celebrate the anniversary of the battle of the Boyne as other organizations have to commemorate Certain notable events by parades, speeches, &c., but it is a pity that tts members in this country cannot see the uselessness of a de- Monstration in honor of an event which happened on foreign soil nearly two hun- dred years ago, and which demonstration is almost invariably sure to revive old en- mites and result in violence and bloodshed. It does not seem to be fully settled whether the Orangemen will parade in New York on ‘Thursday or not, but in Montreal prepara- Uohs for a celebration on a large scale are being made, and there is every prospect of an exciting time. In fact, judging from the tenor of the dispaiches,a bloody riot be- tween the Orangemen and the Catholic Irish is almost inevitable. The Orangemen constitute a secret political society, com- posed wholly of protestants, and its pro. fessed objects are to support and defend the reigning sovereign of Great Eritain, the Protestant religion, the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland, and the suc- cession to the throne in the present royal family o long as it remains Protestant. Apy member marrying a Catholic is forth- with expelled from the order, which was organized tn the north of Ireland in 1795, Ostensibly to counteract the influence of the Roman Catholic secret associations called “the defenders” or “ribbonmen.” Since its organization almost every celebration of the order has been attended with tamult3 and bloodshed. Much excitement was occasioned by the attempt, in 1860, to compel the Prince of Wales during his progress through the British provinces, to pass under its orders and banners, a recognition steadily refused by the prince and his suite. In 1571 the Orangemen had a large procession, guarded by the police and military, in New York ¢eity. During its march it was attacked by the Catholics, who were repelled by the police and military, with the loss of sixty lives. It is to be hoped the Orangemen in New York and other large cities will aban- don the idea of parading on Thursday, but if they determine to celebrate it 1s of course the duty of the authorities to see that they are protected in their undoubted right to observe the occasion in a peaceable manner. It will be gratifying to Joequin Miller to know that Bayard Taylor, who has written @ number of big books, is to receive a for- eign mission of importance. In his lecture here a year or more ago Mr. Miller animad- Yerted upon the fact that a minister to Eng- land (Motley) who had written several big books, and who, in fact, was a “Literary fel- ler,” had been removed to make room for a person (Schenck) who had written only a little book—an ousay oat the game of of poker. Of all ‘the ‘appointees | for diplomatic ser- vice no one will leave the country with heartier good wishes for his welfare, than James M. Comly. of the Ohio State Journal, Who is soon to sail for his postas Minister Resident at Honolulu. President Hayes, it is well known, desired to give Gen. Comly a position of more prominence in another quarter, but the physicians declared that the State of the latter's health made it requisite that be should go to the milder climate of Honolulu for a year or two, at least. We recognize in bis departure a serious loss to the best side of journalism. While he writes with a wit, felicity of expression, and keen- hess of point, that give him the advantage in every controversy, his most telling hits are always delivered in such manly tem- per and sunny humor that his defeated a/l- versaries always remain his friends. Wa hope he will speedily reeover his health and return to his profession, to further illustrate good tempered, manly, gentlemanly jour- nalism —_-<+e-___ ‘@ @re not surprised that in his remarks | yesterday in a Capitol guide case Judge | Snell took the ground thatthe Capitol au- thorities should have no monopoly in the matter of showing visitors about the build- ing, that any one of good moral character ought to be permitted to act as guide without any restriction, except as to character; and every stranger who visits the city ought to have the privilege of selecting his own guide, ‘Who should not be prevented from so acting if known to be a safe and trustworthy per- *on. It is doubtful if our higher courts woald * tain the assumption of the Capitol au- ti. rities that they alone have the right to des) vate guides for strangers. Any well beba\.d person has a right to visit the Capie tol, anc it ts hard to see what difference it makes (en if he does go there in the ca- pacity of 2 guide. Wehope the next case which comes before the police court will be appealed for a final determination of the matter. ——_- «+e —____. Chief Joseph exhibits considerable ability a8 @ tactician, apd his last success may lead to his receiving material aid from other bands of Indians who thus far have taxen ‘BO part in the war against the whites. It is @ reproach{ul fact that even General Howard and the Indian inspector in Idaho admit that in the present war the whites were the aggressors. “ No citizens have been killed,” Says the inspector, ‘who hare not done some wrong to the Indians, and thus far women and cnildren have been spared by Chief Joseph and his band.” There is something touching in Joseph's expressed conviction that he is going to be killed, for it implies that he hopes for no mercy, and therefore will sell his life as dearly as possible. « Throw it away,” he recently said to his Llit- tle bund, which bad captured money from the whites; “you will never need money again,” all of which means resistance to the CEARETS ANDI L AGHT SUMMER Wwe bare a Inrge sn CUARETS and LIGHT WINES enh th wel them cheap for cash Extra COLDI CATAWBA, sweet or dry, only 1.25 gall Seo REEDS SONS, jyW-tr 1216 F Street Northwest. | At COST FOR CASH.
