THE BUILDING SET ON FIRE. Yesterday morning, about one o'clock, the building known as the Second Colored Bap- list church,on 3d street, between Hand I streets northwest, was discovered to be on fire, and an alarm was at once struck, to which the fire department promptly ‘re- id The fire a to have started the gallery, and in a little time the roof was burned off, and but little left of the upper part of the building except the walls. The firemen worked with a will, and with the police and others succeeded in saving the ches. There is but little doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary, as & lighted lamp was found burning tn one of the aisles when the door was broken in. It is thought that the burning grew out of the troubles in the tion. These trou- bles have been the subject of litigation since May, 1576, the parties belug George Fitz- hugh and others, trustees, for the past six years, and a. Rev. Madison L. Gas- kins, and six rs, claiming to be trustees, and it will be remembered Judge Wylie re- cently made a decision givin; e Fitzhagh party the keys of the church. A business meeting was held on Friday night last, at which there was a discussion as to the effect of the decision, whicn is claimed by the Fitzhogh poms as in their favor. The de- fendants, however, claim that the case was not finally decided, but continued, and that defendants were di to file a cross-biil asking affirmative relief, that this inei- dental order of the court was, in reality, favorable to the defendants, who claim to represent the majority of the church; that the new trustees having been irregalarly elected the court required the keys to be de- livered up to the old trustees, instructing them that they sbould hold the chureh pro- rity simply as trustees, for the majority, aving nothing to do or say as trustees as to who should enter and worship there or preach—their relation to the chureh as trus- tees being purely temporal, not spiritual. ‘The defendants iurther claim that the action of the court was altogether satisfactory to them, and the intimations thrown out by Judge Wylie indicate that when the plead- ings are properly awarded he would recog- nize and sustain ihe majority of the church, represented by the “Gaskins party,” or de- fendants. It is estimated that the loss by the fire is about $1,500. Notwithstanding the condi- tion in which the flames left the building, all the regular services were held there dur- ing the ¢ esterday, including an early morning prayer meeting at5 0° ‘Transactions in Real Estate. It deciared that in ail cases where married women deal with the associa- Uons the mortgage is good only for the actual amount loaned and legal interest. A logical consequence seems to be that ifthe money loaned bas not been actualiy used to buy or impprove her separate real estate, but has been used to raise money to pay her hus- band’s debts. or for other purposes, it is void altogether. This will, no doubt, seriously afiect the vast investments made by build- ing associations on the credit of mortgages given by married women, and will prove a grave matter for such 9 sociations. Of late years it has been a very common practice for men to bold their property in their wives’ names, and, when desirous of a loan, to join with the wives in the mortgage, contrary to the law as it now appears. 1 effect of this decision will certainly be seen in litigation | consequent upon suils.on mortgages given by married women, and a wtal refusal by the associations to make future loans on any terms. A WomMaA N's JUMP FROM A THIRD-STORY Wixpow.—About ten days ago, Mrs. Mar: Ann Hall, wife of Mr. H. B. Hall,a weil known and wealthy business man of Morris- ania, was sent to Dr. E. P. Miller's Hydro- pathic Institute, in west 2th street, being in- sane. Her four sons enlisted in the army, and one of them was severely wounded. Her fears that her other sons might be killed in battle preyed upon her, and she has beea insane for the past twelve or fourteen years. She was watched while in Dr. Milier’s Inst!- lute for the first few days, but as she showed no —— of violence she was on Sunday morning left alone in her room. The room is in the rear part of the building, in the third story. One of the windows was open, and Mrs. Hall jumped out, falling into the basement area-way, a distance of about 35 feet. She was found insensible, and soon died.—[N. ¥. Sun, 6th. SUICIDE Or A VENERABLE MAN.—Peter Newviue, an old man, aged about 85 years, and residing near Leonardtown, cominitted suicide on Saturday afternoon last, about 2 o'clock, by hanging himself to a tree. When found by the wife of his son, with whom he lived, he was on his knees in almost a natu- ral position, with the rope around his neck and tied toa little hickory limb about five feet and a halffrom the ground. No cause be assigned for this terrible act except a isposition to self-destruction whica he had before evinced.
