_ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY.... June 2%, 1977. CROSBY 8S. NOYES... .Editor. Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500,—veing more than three times that of any other daily paper in Wash- ington, and more than that of ali the others added together. The Star's « Sworn Circulation.” For some time past THE STAR has kept railed to its masthead the vaunting an- houncement that lis moorn circulation was 17,400 copies. which, aecording to tts modest reckoning, was ‘‘mcre than three times that of any other daily paper tn Washington. and more than that of all the others added ether.” Yesterday morning when the bids for publishing the tax-list were 0; the mcorn cirewlation of THE STAR, peek ore an average of its cireulation from January 1, 1877, to June 1, 1877, was found to be only "15.25%, whereas ‘the sworn cir culation of The National Republican for the same period was 6,00 copies daily After this show of hands we actually hop-d that Tre Sta would bave hauled down its old flag and run up another, showing a de- cline of 2.142 daily copies from the that it formerly elalined. Not so, bo for in last evening's isxue the publ were again informed that THE Srar’s sworn circulation was still 1,0. W must confess we are przz! account for A diserepancy so flagrant Will THE STARK please explain how 1 t= thi it Swears to ome se ures to tie Distei tutkes Oath to anot set to the public? Now, we frankly state thn we belleve our neighbor f= misinien as to resent cireuiation, whieh it placed ast ev We do ne cire’ * matter €a pro We are perf. wei usa rest, beyoud & tion te nat ». to perm STAR may desig in our pressroom every morning, wit the Ferlormance of our matchless’ Bulloc umber of Republicans it . "We are perfectly wMiling to con is arrangement for the next six orthe next year. If Toe STAR has circulation, as It swears to have, it of course derive incalculable hexeflt ‘by having the Republican covfirm its state- ments. What says THe Star?—Kepr con. The mblican seems to de a good dea} flurried in regard to the tax-list adlvertis: ing, but it’s solic! » rezard to the sup. posed discrepancy In THE STAR statements Of circulation is entirely without cause There is no discrepa: z culation of THE STAR was giveu, as re quired by the form of proposal, for the five months from the Ist of Junaary, 1577, to the Ist of June, 1577, and the figures, as required by the same specifications, represented only the regular bona fide circulation of the p+ per during the period named. Our state- ment of the average circulation for that time Was not “doctored,” or “lumped,” or “‘pad- ded,” but was based upon the actual figures of each days’s bona fide circulation, and had it been required, we should very cheerfully have stated the circulation day by day dur- tng that period. The bona fide average cir- culation (15,353) of THE STAR given for the five months named was scrupulously acen- rate, and there is no discrepancy between the large circulation for five months, and the yet larger’average cirenlation for later Months of the same period, as claimed in our columns. And now, as The Republican has raised the question of sworn statements, we venture to make anenquiry. It was required that the Circulation of the papers putting in proposals for advertising should be sworn to by the Pressman of each paper. Did the pressmanof the Republicom swear to the statement of the Circulation of that paper? If not, we sugzeat that there would seem to bea slight tnfor- mality inthe Republican's depositions con- cerning circulation. As regards the proposition to exchange Visits of inspection of the press rooms of Ti1F STAR and Republican, we can that we are always glad to afford newspaper men and others concerned the oppor. tunity to see our lightning press engage? hour aiier hour daily in the work of supply ing the universal demand for our paper. Per- haps we shall accept the polite invitation o the Rewehtican to visit its press-room. We have some curiosity to see that traly «« matehiess Bullock press that, accord ing to report, prints the Republican's immense edition in a Uttle less than four minutes; Wut in order to avoid the inevita ble disappointment that would arise icom being five minutes late, we shall have to ask our neighbor to favor us with the exact mo- mentor the exact minute and bour it goes to press. by respectable person ent ——+.e.-—__ At the late special election in Charleston county, South Carolina, on the 26th inst., to choose {7 members of the legislature, the r. publicans bad no ticket in the fleld, and a republican majority of 6000 was wiped out The democrats generously gave the colored men & representalic 1 of three on their ticket however, and the wasone of the quietest since the w: f which goes to show that the repabliea: e lost their grip in South Carolina and ¢ never secure a new hold as long as they embody tn th in the ignorant and 4S elements of the stat ——_—_-<e-- ‘he Prest © Welco seems to be thorough tarning to We Will perhaps circle gress di the y Strate north the sa daker New England bit, hi Ex.G repubi Loutsia in L att wo indet be per oe The fail in prices of coal at in New York ye=terd: are ESE Market Space. cit ACES!
