Mr. Dyer, from the committee on teachers, reported the following course of study for the advanced grammar school: Ist term, arith- metic, algebra, physics,general history, vocal music, English grammar, drawing, geome- try, English literature, and penmanship. Miss Emily dene, the head and front of the troupe, is said to be more charming than ever, and to have selected a company conspicuous for talent and general attractiveness. Sale of seais opens on Thursday. — ane THE MARKET DEALERS.—In the Criminal Court, Judge MacArthur, to-day, the cases | of certain dealers in the Washington market were heard—Mr. Birney for the District, and Messrs. Merrick and Elliot for the dealers. | These cases came up on appeal from the Po- lice Court, where fines were imposed for sell- ing meats, &c., without license. The first ease called was that of James A. Hoffman, a butcher, and the defence admitted that he oceupied stalls in the market; that he pur- chased cattle on the hoof, and sold the meat inthe market. After a lengthy argument, the court decided that Hoffman was not lia- ble toa license under the law. The case will go to the general term. In the case of Thom) Son, a produce dealer, the counsel agreed submit briefs, with the understanding that the decision in this case will decide the other similar cases. —e ATTEMPED EsCare.—This morning, just before the opening of the Police Court, a soldier named John J. Mahorney. charged with being drunk and disorderly, after being placed in the dock, removed the wooden bar which secures the shutter on the dock win- dow overlooking the entrance to the building, and opening the inside shutters raised the window and let himself down, striking on the doorsteps. James Hughes, one of the bailiffk, saw the act just in time to secure the man, and he was returned to his quarters and afterwards sent to the worklouse. —_-—_—_ Tne Jcry OUT IN THE CANAAN INFAN- TICIDE CASE.—The case of Mary Canaan, | Charged with the murder of her infant child on the 1éth of July last, was yesterday, in the Criminal Court, Judge Mae Arthur, giveh to the jury at 34 o'clock, and they were out all night, and to-day at ‘clock they came into court, and Mr. J. E. Miller, the foreman, stated that they had not agreed on a verdict.
