_ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: DAY....... December 11, 1876. is CROSBY S. NOYES........Editor. “Reading Matter on Every Page. Arerage sworn Daily Cireutation ever 15,000,—being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers in the city added tegether. To Business Men. On account of the pressure of both news and adver tisements apon our columns, at the present time, and Yo enable Tus Stax to be circulated at the earliest hour powible each day, advertisers are requested to send in their favors as early in the day as practicable. “They must be in hand before 12 o clock to insurs in sertion the «ame day, and they ought to be in as much oarlier than that as is pessible in each caso. —————— One of the most hopeful signs of the times is the calm, moderate attitude assume! by representative southern mer like Hill, Ste- phens, Lamar and Brown. The scheme to impeach the President, it would seam, was defeated by the firm stand against it taken vern democrats. Hon. Ben. Hill, of . is reported as saying that if the of this country are not capable of set- tling the Presidential question without vio- lence, they are not fit to haye a President, t ht to be governed by a hereditary monarch; and further, that if the representa- tives of the people here in Washington could not settle amicably the present difficulty, they onght to go home and give their con- stituents a chance to put wiser men in their places. If such wise counsel prevails, we shall get ont of our present political compli- cations with but one President and an undi- vided Union. Forncy’s Sunday Chronicle, reterring to the jective character of thedirahamite pave- ment upon Pennsylvania avenue, pointed out in Saturday's STAR, thinks the property- holders on the south side of the Avenue (where the work has been suspended by the cold weather) should petition Congress to compel the commission to annul the present con- tract, and order a new letting for a payement that will stand. =~ 208 -____ Several House committees bave gone south to investigate the recent elections in the dis- puted states, and several Senate sub-com- mittees leave to-night for the same purpose. The question is, will the country be any wiser than it is row after these committees have done the work assigned them and made their reports? The House committees are of course composed in the main of democrats, while the Senate committees have a majority of republicans. The House committees on their return will undoubtedly report that fair elections were held, while the Senate com- ittees will show any amount of fraud, violence and intitaidation, and will justify the throwing out of “bull-dozed” localities. »rity reports will be alopted in each House, but the settlement of the «aestions at issue will be as far off It execed- sult to be ob- t expense of sever ful whether th will warrant tigat tained the the inve ++ - arrest of the missioners in I Z a policeman, wa three lade which the thr erred to belong, iminun pamissi ners re- from arrest in civil cases, and it does not appear the arrests in Philadelphia were on warrants.
