_ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THRSDAY December 7, 1976. Reading Matter on Every Page. pace sworn Daily Circulation ever 15,000,—being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers in the city added together. To Business Men. On account of the pressure of both news and adver tisements upon oar columns. at the present time. and to enable Tax Star to be circu! it the earliest hour possible each day, advertisers are requested to eond in their favors as early in the day as practicable. ‘They must be in hand before 12 o'clock to insure in sertion the same day. and they onght to be in as much earlier than that as is pessible in cach case ‘The Brooklyn Horror. The later reports concerning the frightful calamity at the Brooklyn Theater show that the loss of life was even greater than our dis- patches of yesterday set forth. The inquiry oecurs why this great loss of life We are informed by those ac- quainted with the position and surroundings of the Breoklyn Theater. that the theater building embraced within its walls the post Office. the police station, the Sanday Sun of- fice, and Deltrich’s hotel. It was literally enclosed in a hollow square—the audience reached their seats through a hall-way lead- ing to and around the rear of the first circle. Atul J of this the stairs commence lead- ing to the upper circles. Experienced theat- rieal people concur that the loss of life was entirely confined to the upper circles, and to those on the stage that attempted to save their wardrobes before making their escape. Manager Ford's theory is that the fire was burning for some time in the scenery above the stage, and the carpenters endeavored to extinguish it before any alarm was given—a ceiling piece of scenery screen- ing it from the audience and acts for a while; but the carpenters cut away the ropes at last. and the burning material fell upon the cetling piece, which is used in the last act, and ignited it, and the rest of the scenery nearest the stage. At this moment the panic evidentiy occurred. and the hall and stair- way were choked up with a frantic, frightened crowd. The fower floor was soon cleared, but the smoke impeded and finaily suffocated those in the upper circles some time before the flames reached where they fell, swooned and lifeless. Manager Ford says that this is but the see ts of a loss of burning of théa The first was mond theater, in I*11, and t there was very similar to the Brookly ror. ‘Our thea n such emer- geneies with fac’ tional has a pax large doorwaysopening out tothem. Both of the upper cireles have separat> stairways Jeading out of the house without going through The 3 rh side, a) the vestibule. The stage al-o lias a largedoor ‘on the rear alley.as well as doors on the open passageways adjoining It is understood that in this city since the Richmond fire, near ten million auditors have visited places of amusements and lec- ures without the slightest accident occurring, and in the entire country it might be claimed that a thousand million have been enteriained Without mishap. Consequently, fearful as this terrible calamity appears, it does not Prove our theaters to be by any means dan- gerous Sh: We Have Mexican Politics? The returning boards of the three disputed states have as the result of their canvass of the votes of those states declare| the election of the Hayes and Wheeler etors, thus add - ing 19 votes to the 166 previously held by the republican candidates for President and Vice President, giving them nominally the 185 electoral votes requisite fora majority. But from all three of these states counter claims come in behalf of Tilden and He dricks, lacking, however. the endors: of the returning ‘boards and of ernors of the respective states. Fro gon, also, the claim ix presental of a democratic electoral vote for Tilten and Hendricks on the mimi of the in- eligibility of one of the repu' This claim is strengthened by th the governor of that state has commis ademocratic elector. If this vote is counted for Tilden of course it elects him, but natu- rally the republican party will make vigor- ous opposition to being counted ont in Oregon, just as the democrats will to being counted out in Louisiana. The complicated question is now precipitated upon Congress; one branch of which is republican, and the other democratic. How to settle it short of a descent to the Mexican style of polities is a problem that will task the best men of the country. If we have any statesmen amongst Us this complication will develop them. —— or —__ The new democratic daily made its ap- pearance this morning in quite handsome and newsy shape, and bearing the title of The Union, a much handier name for journal- istic uses than the cumbrous «Cons‘ifutional Union,” first proposel. The editorials are well written, and not too ponderous: and, altogether, the new paper makes a promising start. ) electors: ——_-<e---_____ The action of the governor of Oregon in giving an electoral certificate to a demo- cratic elector is a bit of sharp practice which only the provessional politician will endorse. Still, as Boss Tweed was wont to inquire. “What are you going to do about it?” If the twenty-second joint rule is inoperatiye, and if the vote of no state, which comes properly attested by the governor, can be thrown out, it will be the plain duty of the presiding of- cer of the Senate to count the vote of Cron: the democratic elector. This would, of course, be defeating the will of a majority of the people of Oregon. but neverthe- less it is held that the presiding of- ficer of the Senate cannot go behind the Certificates of the governors of states. Of course it may be claimed on the democratic Side that this affords only an offset to the action of the retarning boar! in Louisiana; but supposing the latter to have been frauda- lent, two wrongs do not make a right. In fact, the party that now counts itself in by fraud or by sharp practice will be pretty cer- tainly counted out by the people at the next election. ——___-«e«. A new complication has been added to the electoral muddie in Florida, it will be seen, and the democrats return a set of Tiklen elee- tors. ——_~+e---__ Mar-hal Concha, of Spain, estimates the total force of the insurgent Cabans at only 5,900. He recommends that they be isolated in the woods and kept there. This is a virtual admission that the insurgents cannot be con- quered. Keeping an army of 70,000 men in Cuba to isolate the insurgents Is rather an expensive operation, and it might be cheaper in the end to make peace with them at once. Marsha! Concha himself was not long sinee commander-in-chief of the forces In Cuba, and his views on Cuban affairs are therefore worth noting. ——__-<+e-___ ‘This ts a curious position of affairs. The elec‘oral vote was declared yest-rday in all the s.»tes, and yet nobody today, republican OF denwwerat, fags adie to say who is Presi- dent. ———_-~<+e- -__ If many more deaths from hydrophobia oc- curring from the bite of Spitz dogs are re- ported, that particular breed of canines will soon become unpopular. Another case of this kind occurred on Staten Isiand on Sunday last, the vietim being a boy «ix years of age, ‘who was bitten in July last.
