One single signal turned on in the box will cause the simulta- neous “hitching up” of the horses in all the engine horses throughout the District. Engine house No. 2.0n Ds received the visitors. the horses, deseribed in connectic 3 house, has lately been introduced here, and works like a charm. The boys were all up, and a tap of the gong brought them all down stairs, and the horses clattered out to their places. They were hooked up, and the men were on the reel and engine ready for the start inten seconds. A second test reduced this time one second. Engine house No. 1,on K street, the last of the Washington stations visited. was some ten years ago the model one of the District. The comparison of this with many of the others shows how swift has been the progress in this branch of the public service as in many others. The stables are far back behind the «engine room,” and both men and horses have to traverse a considerable distance before the animals attach to the engine and hose-carriage, and yet, with all these drawbacks, the horses were in the traces and the men on the “machines” within 30 se The same comforts and conveniences have here been provided for “the boys” as at. other points, and the faulty construction of the building ean be obviated by alterations at a cost not exceeding $600. In passing through the sleeping apartment up stairs the visitors an opportunity of seeing how a fireman Manages to get out of bed and dress so quickly. The horses of thedepart- ment in every engine house were much ad- mired for strength and sagacity. Much progress has been made, but more remains to be done. We have about the most «ficient department, for its size, of any in the country, but it is too small to contend with two fires at ones, or a large fe conflagration, if one should ocenr. There ought to be anotier hook and ladder company to provide fora contingency of two fires at the same time, and at leastt wo more steam engine compa- nies. The arrangement for freeing the horses used in houses Nos. 2 and 3 could be intro- duced with advantage in all the houses. ——— Are Election Bets “Om?” A DEMOCRATIC VIEW OF THE MATTER. Editor Star: Referring to a paragraph in this morning's Baltimore Sun in regard to bets on the resull of the election of President—it suggests the fact whether or not all such bets are “off.” On all wagers amongst betting men there are certain rules which govern; they are by common consent termed referees, to whom question is left for a decision. For instance in horse racing all bets go with the dec ision of the judges, but at the same time the judges have undoubted right to de- clare all bets*-off,” and by al} betting men this ruling is generally acquiesced in without any murmuring. It is plain to the whole country that Mr. Tilden has been fairly and justly elected as the next President of the United States. If however by any pretext dishouest and unscrupulous partisans should attempt to divert the just will of the people and set aside their verdict, under false and vague rul- ings, then and in such case any fair-minded! referee would declare all such bets “off.” I would therefore advise all parties interested to take precautionary measures in the premi- -——-+—__ Leisure Hours with FRANCE.—A most pleasant and profitable manner of spending & few leisure hours with cultivated and intel- ligent company is to join one of Mlle Prad'- bomme’s French classes.
