It is doubtful if moge exaggerated and false Yeports Were ever telegraphed from Wash- ington than were sent to the New York Sua and Heraid of Monday, regarding the move- ment of 450 regular troops to the arsenal in this city. The Sim dispatch represents Wash- ington on Sunday night as being “in a state of excitement unparaileled since Sumpter was fired on In '61;” that thousands were in the streets and hotels, and iia hundreds more Of people were flocking in from: the adjoining counties, ete! We need only inform our distant readers that the severe storm which prevailed all day and night on Sunday kept people indoors, while the lobbies of the ho- tels were thinly occupie! and unattended with any excitement whatever. It is doubt- ful if twodozen persons at the utmost knew till Monday morning that any troops had ar- Tived here. The Herat dispatch, not to be ©atdone by the Stn's, makes a large draft on its correspondent’s imagination on Tuesday, and puts a heavy armament in Fort Whip- ple, locates siege guns in Fort Bunker Hill, (an old and battered earthwork used in the late war.) measures the range of artillery in the streets of Washington, examines the Strength and capacity of the two bridges across the Potomac, and does other highly wonderful warlike and sensational things. The Sun yesterday prints a dispatch showing that most all of its “news” the day before was untrue, while the Herald ridicules its correspondent’s sensation by saying: “If any- body tmagines four hundred artillerymen, commanded by men like Hancock and Sher- man, under the orders of General Grant, are dangerous to American liberty, we advise him to move over into Mexico for a quiet life.” 2 —__ The Czar of all the Russias has at last given the most solemn assurances that he has no intention of “‘bull-dozing” John Bull by pos- sessing himself of Conftantinople. The gov- rmment of England learns this with the Utmost satisfaction, since it precludes the possibility of a war, into which Great Britain would have entered at much incon- venience, and hardly sustained by the public approval. Among the thousand and one complications growing out of our electoral college sytem is the trouble arising from ineligible electors, and irregularity in the election of the electoral ticket in several states. The subject of the power of the state authorities to fill vacancies after the election has oceurred, and remedy tier irregularities, is now being discussed, and it is more than likely that the question Will be one of the first to confront Congress when that body assembles in joint session to Witness the counting of the vote. There should be no hair-splitting in this matter. Both parties ought to be willing to agree upon some equitable mode of procedure in such a case, since both are equally inter- ested. Throwing aside technical quibbles, the plain intent of the states in the election ought to be considered. For instance, let it be supposed that the New York electoral ticket contained the ames of but thirty instead of thirty-five democratic electors. Everybody concedes that that state was carried for Tilden and Hendricks, and that, notwithstanding any defect in the electoral ticket, it was the plain intent of a majority of the voters to vote the democratic ticket. Vermont on the other hand, was carried by a pronounced majority for Hayes and Wheeler, and it would be manifestly unfair because of the ineligibility of one of the electors, to change the result. By common consent the state authorities should be allowed in all cases to remedy irregulari- ties, no matter whether they were discovered before or after the election, in such a way that the will of a majority of the people of the states where these irregularities occur may not be disregaried. —_—_—_<eo—___ ‘The members of the Jackson Democratic Association of this city show their good sense in declining to partictpate in any po- Jitical until it is definitely ‘known who is elected President. It would seem the partof wisdom for both parties to abstain from jubilating until it is known to aS certainty who is to be our next Chief Ma- gistrate. Editor Star:—As you_ —< mite treet from Dr. Redfield’ nd 5 ce to the Ch ike, “Commerciat, inform ys ™ ether he ba 8 demnaceat or a republican, Also, what are tl ities of the OM ercial SUBSCRIBERS. ‘Th Commercial is, we should say, an inde- pendent paper with republican leanings. It has supported Hayes in this campaign. As to the other inquiry, perhaps the most satis. factory answer is that given by the Oommer- cial itself in respone to a similar question: “We do not know whether Mr. Redfield calls himself a democrat or a republican. We believe he tries to be a repub prefers the republican to the democratic rty as long as n stick to it, but_we neo certain k ledge of the fact. We never happened to ask about his polities. His place of residence is Chattanooga. We value him as a correspondent because he is a Gtsinterested truth-teller. His judgment is nodoubt sometimes at fault, but his sta ments of fact are thoroughly relia! Ww vouch for honest man. a The Baltimore Gazette declares the state- Tent telegraphed from that city to a New York paper, that “within ten days the re- cruiting officers at Baltimore have enlisted 1,900 colored men, who were shipped in com- panies to different points,” to be entirely unfounded. So another of the sensation Feports of the day is stamped out. ———————— Donaki G. Mitchell gives an amusing ac- count of his trials and tribulations as a diplo- matic representative of the Cnited States in his “Story of a Consulate.” It is doubtless true that our consuls abroad are poorly paid, but some of them manage to stumble upon good fortune occasionally. Brigadier Gen- eral di Cesnola, who was sent as consul to Cyprus just after the rebellion, is an instance ©f the kind. Soon after his arrival there he @iscovered buried antiquities of rare value, which he sold fora large sum to an associa- tion in New York; and recently in excavat- img he found a temple containing vessels of gold and silver, and precious stones, all of ‘which he offers to the New York Metropoli- tan Museum of Art for the sum of $50,000 in gold. The British Museum has already of- ered him the same sum, but being an ardent American by adoption he prefers that the Tnited States shall possess these antiqui- ties, which date back to 400 and 1500 B. Cc have reached so near the figure named that it is safe tosay that New York will get the collection.
