G STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY...November %, 1876. CROSBY 5. HOYED........Eaiter. Beading Matter on Every Page The Result. The returns in our midnight edition of ‘Tux STAR indicated quite surely the elec- tion of Tilden, and the dispatches received this forenoon all go to make those indica- tions a certainty. There are some who still think that returns from the country part of the states not reached by telegraph will show sufficient republican gains in doubtful states to elect Hayes, but we see no good reason to look for any change in the general drift of democratic gains. Til- den srd Hendricks are quite certainly elected, and probably by a sufficient elec- toral mejority to set at rest any fearsof a conflict in counting the electoral vote of in- dividual states as was apprehended by some in case of a close contest. This at least will bea matter of congratulation in all quarters. Avother matter of general congratulation 1s that, potwitbstanding the interest felt in the result, and the intense strain of excite- ment prevailing In many states the election pasced off without disturbancs of a serious ebaracter at any point,so far as knowa, Thus in apother great national election the People of the United States have shown their ce pacity for self government. The Next Senate The present terms of twenty five United States Senators expire in March next The pames of these Senators are Messrs Goldthwaite, Clayton, Saulsbury, Norwood, Logan, Wright, Harvey, Stevenson, West, Blaine, Boutwell, Ferry, Windom, Alcorn, Hitehcock, Cragin, Frelinghuysen, Ransom, Kelly, Anthony, Robertson, Cooper, Hamil- ton, Johnson and Davis. Nine of these are democrats, fourteen republicans, and two in- dependent republicans, Messrs Robertson and Hamititon. Two other Senatorial vacan- cies remain to be filled, viz: those in Louis- jane aod West Virginia, occasioned by the rejection of the claim of Pinchback to @ seat, nd the death of Senator Caperton. The suc- cersors of several of these Senators have Siready been chosen. Governor Kirkwood, (republican) of Iowa, has been chosen to succeed Mr. Wright (republican); Mr. Beck (democrat) to succeed Mr. Stevenson (demo- ¢rat),of Kentucky; Mr. Lamar (democrat) to succeed Mr. Alcorn (republican), of Mis- sissippi; Mr. Rollins (republican) to succced Mr. Cragin (republican), of New Hampshire; and Governor Coke (democrat) to succeed Mr. Hamiltor (independent republican), of Texas. Messrs. Anthony (republican), of Rhode Island, and Johnston (democrat), of Virginia, bave already been elected to suc ceed themselves. Messrs. Goldthwaite (dem.), Clayton (rep), Saulsbury (dem.), Norwood (cem.), West (rep.), Frelinghuysen (rep.), Ransom (dem.), Kelly (dem ). Robert- son (ind. rep), Cooper (dem,), and Davis (dem.), wiil undoubtedly be succeeded by democrats, and the Louisiana and West Virginia vacancies will be filled by demo- crats. Politically the parties in the present Senate may be divided into 42 republicans, 2 iedependent republicans, and 29 democrats It is therefore easy to see that afier March 4th next the Senate will be much more evenly divided, and that a bare democratic majority is among the possibilities. The re publicans will gain two Senators, however, from the new state of Colorado, and conse- quently the Senate, after March ith next, Will consist of 76 members. A careful esti- mate makes the Senate after that date stand 40 republicans against 36 democrats, but this is based on the presumption that Messrs Logan, Harvey, Biaine, Boutwell, Ferry. Windom and Hitchcock will be succeeded by republicans. Should any two‘of tnese Senators be succeded by democrats the Sen- ate would stand 33 to 33, and witha uemo cratic presiding officer in the person of Mr. Hendricks would have a majority of one. —<—<<2e-—___ The election of General Butler over his two opponents, Hoar and Tarbox, is another Proof of the Busy B's invincibility if not ia ‘war at least in peace. He promises to bea lively element in the next Congress, since he based his claim to political preferment mainly on his desire and ability to combat ‘the heretical theories of the ‘‘ex-confeder- ates” in the House. The “ex confederates” will im turn doubtless labor to keep their enc even and make it warm for the Lowell statesman. —_—_-<ee--_____ The impression is becoming more genera) that Senator Blaine, who was appointed to Ol the vacancy occasioned by the resigue- tion of Senator Morrill, to accept the port folio of the Secretary of the United States Treasury, will bave a competitor in Secre- tary Morrill. The Boston Glove “learas in a most direct manner that Secretary Morrill. while he does not propose to resign his office, as was reported, and enter into the work of openly competing for the election to the seat in the Senate now held by Mr. Blaine, which is not his way, does desire to be returned to the Senate when the time comes, or be retired.” After referring to the reluctance with which Mr. Morrill accepted the position he now holds, the Giobe says— We are satisfied that bis tention has all along been to retire from the Secretaryship with the present Ad- ministration, no matter how the Prest dential etection should turo, and take nis Old seat in the Senate if such should be the desire of the legislature of the state.” While’ Mr. Morrill has strong hold on the affec- tons and confidence of the people of Maine, ‘whom be has served so long and 8» faithful- ly, nis election to the Senatorship for the long term beginning March next over Mr Biaine is by no means assured. Mr. Blaine, who is Mr. Morriil’s janitor by fifteen years, bas seen nearly as much of public life, while his record tn the Honse of Kepresenta tives is an exceptionally brilliant one. He “came withia one” of being nominated for the Presidency, and is undoubtedly very Popular among the people of his state. © The term of Senator Boutwell, of Massa- chusetts, expires March 3d next, and the question arises will he succeed himself? A Boston correspondent of the Hartford Cour- ‘ant writes that there will be @ bitter Butler ‘opposition to George Roar, and all the latent sympatby with Butler as an extreme repub lican on the southera question, as well as the dread of encouraging party division, will be brought to the aid of Boutwell, who is sure to be the Butler candidate. And yet Senator Eoutwell seems a faint hearted sap- porter of the General, after all. In a speech which be delivered in Batier’s district tne other night he never once alluded to him. democratic exchanges covered with a per- play heads in “stud-borse” type. Lee, whieh are ‘@ dosen steamboats plying from New York ‘whose engines are doubie the size of the Cen- VAAL Corian, for Bak Enovgh returns have been received to in- dicate a very close division of parties in the House of Representatives of the Forty fifth Congress. The present House consists of 185 democrats and 108 republicans, thus giv- ing the former 77 majority. To overcome this majority 39 more repubdlican members @re necessary, and these, sanguine repud- licans have claimed, would be forthcoming Sfter the election. The election has come and gone, and it looks as if their hopas would be at least partially realized. At the October elections the result in Ohio showed @ republican gain of 5, and in Indiana of 4. Tilinois is reported as giving a gain of 5, Cal- {fornia of 2,and Massachusetts of 4. For- pey’s Press claims @ gain of 4 Congressmen in Pennsylvania, and New Jersey gives a republican gain ofone. It will be seen that seven states probably give the republicans Sgainof %. A gainof 14 more Congress- men would give the republicans @ majority Of one in the House. usunte Migaae Predicts that the democratic ity in the House will be reduced from 77 to about 25. AProRs 8r7.
