EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY......November 4, 1876. | CROSBY 8. NOYES........ Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page | ‘The Centennial commission has decided that, although the great exribdition will for- mally close on Friday next, the 10th inst, persons will continue to be admitted at the usual rates uptil the 18th inst. The exbibi- tion will formally close with a grand jadi tion. There will be a series of national sal utes, brief addresses from promineot men, and orchestral and vocal music under the direction of Theodore Thomas. President Grant has consented te be present @ad per- form the closing ceremony. Every Ameri- can may justly feel prout over the success of the great exhibition, since !t surpasses by far anything of the kind ever before attempt- ed in the world, not only in the vastness of ite extent, but in its pecuniary results. the 21 instant, more 00 pay ing visitors had attended it, and it ts estim ated that before the formal closing this number will be swelled to &,000 000. Next Tnesday being election day, however, the attendance, at least from a distance, may fall off materially, as most of the voters will deem it their duty to be at home on that occasion. But then, Tuesday is «Woman's Day,” when tt is expected that the attendance will be considerably increased mainly by our disfranch!sed female citizens. Philad+iphia wants a spec’ al day, aad ifone ig accorded her @ large attendance may be €xpectet not only from the city, but from points within a three or four hours’ ride. The attendance on “Closing Day” will also be very large. The Ledyer says that as remark- ably large as the attendance has been in a country ®0 young 88 our?. it is pot the most remarkable feature, for the population with- in seven days’ travel of the exhibition does not exceed forty to forty-five millions of people. while the population within seven days’ travel of any of the great European exhibitions fs not less than one huadred and fifty to two hundred millions, ————_-see--— ‘The October report of the Agricultural De- partment shows a red uction in the yield of the wheat crop of nearly one-sixth, while the Quality is somewhat superior. There is an averag* corn crop, aod a short crop ot pota- toes. Of sweet potatoes there is a fall ave- Tage crop of good quality. Every political demonstration recently held in New York has been spoken of ag the grandest ever witnessed in that city. This ts a mistake. Itis safe to say that by far the largest night demonstration was made in New York by “Wide Awake” clabs in the fall of 1860,when Mr Lincoln, a. Dougiass, ani Mr. Breckinridge were rua ning for the Presidency. Many, if not most, of the clabs participating came from the surrounding states, and for days before the toreblight parade arriving trains brought in thousands of Wide Awakes. The procession took up its line of march down the Bowery, pear the Cooper Institute. Leaving the Bowery at itssouthern terminus, it passat down Coatham street and thenes into Broad- way,up which it marched, the procession Occupying the entire street from curb to curb. The great length of the procession can be Imagined by those familiar with New York when it is stated that the head of tne column bad reached Union square before the rear of the jong line ad left the Cooper In stitute going down the Bowery. It was es- timated st the time that the procession numbered at least 75 Cov torches. Those who Saw this realiy imposing pageant pronounce it by far the greates! night demonstration in the way of & procession ever witnessed in the metropolis. ————-<+e —____ Senator Biaine’s votce gave out at Troy, New York, ou Tharstay night. It ts not Surprising in view of bis co.ttaaoas labors on the stump during the preseat canvass. Heand bis admirers may congratulate then- selves that his voice did not fall him aatil Just as the campaign was closta; 20e- In consequence of the outery raised against the supplementary awards, the Centennial Commission has decidei to return to the original system of awards, ani give to each successful exhibitor, with the medal and diploma, the report of the jad signed by them. With the exception of such corrac ons of errors in phraseology as @re made in the necessary process of editing, and in a few cases the striking out of matter in the patare of advertisements inserted in viola tion of the Instructions to the jadgas, the reports will be faroished to exhibitors jast ae written. It appears that only aboat 2,000 Feports out of 11.60) are signed only by the examining judge, and are without the ap- proval of the group of jadges, not because they withheld their sanction, but because in their haste to return to their homes the matter was neglected. The New York Even- » even withont the approving signatures of all the jadges. the reports signed by single experts tn each department will be the best awards that could have been given to exhibitors, and Says that this decision wit! prevent ha exit bition from becoming a failure tn one of Its most important features The present House of Kepresentatives stands 185 democrats to 10 republicans.
