EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: New York. From the fact that the state of New York will perhaps give the casting vote in the Presidential election, the eyes of the poli- Uctans are largely directed there. All the signs Indicate that Mr. Tilden at least appre- Clates the importance of carrying New York, as he certainly cannot be elécted Without the vote of that state. He has been city; and outside he has managed to bring to terms the so-called “Canal Ring,” that threatened to bolt his nomination. The dis affection to him has shown itself more in the murmuring and grumbling of indi viduals than In any actual attempt todefeat bim, or even to reduce his vote. Tae anti Tilden democrats were apathetic rather than actively opposing Tnls apathy of the Jeaders has seemed to extend even to the rank and flieof the party, and daring most of the campaign the democrats ia the Canal districts have done very little work. But, according to Mr. White, the correspondent New York, where they saw Mr. Tilden and were persuaded to go earnestly to beara The reports are that Gov. Tliden having demonstrated to them that his success end pretty well assured, offered to let by-gones be by-gones if they would go home and de- vote themselves to the canvass, and prom- ised them that if he was elected they should recetve the same consideration as others with whom he has never had @ quarrel. Whether this ts the secret of it or not, itis certain that there has been @ great revival among the democrats in the disaffected Canal districts recently, the result of which Will be that their vote will be considerably inereased beyond what it otherwise would bave been. The fact that these disaffections to Tilden in the party tn the state have been measura. bly healed has nodoubt had much to do with the late hopefutness displayed by the dem> crats. At thesame time the republicans in the country part of New York seem to have confidenceof their ability to carry the state, ¥y Tilden does not carry the city by more than 50,000 majority. —-+ee-____ ‘What is Thought at Columbus. Elsewhere we quote from the Onto State Jowmal of the ist instact an editorial upon the political prospects in Ohio, Indiana, New York, and upon the general results, According to this estimate, founded upon “late and authentic” private and personal information, Obio and Iadiana will both go for Hayes, and confidence is expressed in his election. Gen. Comly, editor of the State Journal, was lieutenant colonel in Governor Hayes’ regiment during the war; is fally in bis confidence; and has accsss to his private correspondence. There is no doubt, there- fore, that this editorial is an honest expres- sion of the convictions of Gov. Bayes and Bis friends at Columbus as to the political situation. ee -—___ It is pot surprising to learn that a veteri- Dary surgeon who committed suicide in New York the other day shot bimself with a Colt’s revolver. There would have been a similar appropriateness in his selection of a death dealing weapon had he chosen a horse pistol. ‘The nove! spectacie of a Presidential can. didate sitting on a political platform (made of wood, pot ef paper) and listening to a speech In favor of another candidate, was ‘Witnessed at the Cooper Isstitute last night. While Mr. Evarts was speaking Mr. Peter Cooper entered and took @ seat on the piat- form. Mr. Evarts thereupon ceased and advancing to the venerable greenback candidate for President, shook him by the band. He then resumed his address, taking general ground tn favor of nard as against soft money. It certainly could not have al- forded Uncle Peter much pleasure to listen to Mr. Evarts’ heretical views on the money question, but yet he had an opportunity of letting the New York public see that he was 1m good physical condition and still on the Presidential race course. —_—_—$§__sse--—___ ‘Twe more naval cadets were dismissed at Annspolis yesterday, for hazing. This makes iwelve recently dismissed for this Offence. It 1s to be hoped the dismissing Process will be Kept up until every partici. pant in the cowardly practice of maltreating friendless cadets is done away with forever. Boys who enter large schools of this class should be made to understand, by their parents and friends, that a chivalric sense of bonor always impels the strong to protect the week. ae When Richard Grant White, philologist, ‘Was discoursing learnedly in the Galary a year ago, his pen made him say “two gills make one prt.” Such ?n egregious blunder provoked immediate criticism, whereupon Mr. White expiained, possibly to his own satisfaction, that he was thinking “four” when he wrote “ two,” aud that hehad made BO mistake. It was a simple instamce of “beteropbemy,” In introducing Genera!
