EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: | WEDNESDAY... November 1, 1876. CEOSBY 5. NOYED........ Editor. Beading Matter on Every Page harge of Fraada.eut Registra. se Sen tn New York. As the registration In the city of New York shows 153,000 names on the list, while the city of Philadelphia, with 300,000 less popu- lation than New York, has 136,000 voters registered, there does not seem to be any sufficient ground for charging greater frauds im registration in the democratic city than im the republican city. The reason given why Philadelphia, with less inhabitents, bas a larger registration than New York is stated to be this: In New York the voter must apply in person to be reg'stered, and it is said that a large number of the “upper” classes of society have such an aversion to mingling with the ‘lower million” in the line of registration that they fall to place themselves on the voting lists. At least 20,000 of this superfine class, it is stated, have failed to register in New York this year. In Philadelphia there are 657 districts, of about 250 voters each, with an assessor for @acb, who makes up the list of voters on the Ist day of June, by visiting every house in his district. Sixty days before the election the Assessors sit for two days to revise their lists, and after that they remain unchanged, except as altered by the Court of Common Pleas, on petition in cases of removal to other districts, or frauds. Last year, between twelve and thirteen thousand names were Stricken off by the court; but this year, up to last week, less than 2,000 names had been erased, leaving over 131,000 names on the Lists. Naturally the system of collecting the names of voters by visiting officials is more effective in procuring full lists than ihe system of personal enrolment, as in force in New York. A correspondent of the New York Times Writing from Poughkeepsie, which ia to the 15th Congressional district of the state, is quite sanguine that General John 4. Ketebam, at present one of the District Commissioners, and a candidate for elec- ton to Congress, will be elected by 3,000 majority. SS A singular story is telegraphed hence by the Associated Press, to the effect that clti- zens of Baltimore have seut a letter to the Department of Justice stating that it is cur- rently reported that the sher!{f of Baltimore, through his deputies, is contemplating the arrest of a sufficient number of United States deputy marshals, on or before next Tuesday: With the evident intention of weakening the force of the power and presence of those offi- cers on election day, and that the fear of in- sufficient protection from the United States goverument, in case of arrest of said deputy marshals, bas produced a profound sensa- tion among republicans, which makes it exceedingly difficult to procure @ sufficient Dumber, in some localities, of volunteers for the position of deputy marshals on election day. The sheriff and nis deputies are demo- crate and the deputy marshals are republi- ans; hence the significance of the report. It 1s safe to assume, however, that the story is & roorback, or that the apprehensions of two timid gentlemen are quite unfounded. Toe republican and democratic press of Balti- more take no stock In the story. GENUINE BARGAINS! BRODHEAD @ 00., 1206 F STRSET, BETWHERA 197a AND 1372, WILL SELL Printe for qu! yereement be. How diminutive the terms of public tec- turers twenty years ago appear in compari- son with the #300 or #500 per night now pald many of this class. Twenty years ago Oli- ver Wendell Holmes wrote that his terms for @ lecture when he staid over night were $15 and expenses paid. [he offer of a simi- lar sum to our public lecturers no days ‘Would be regarded as a joke or an insult. —-.02- The Cailforvia grangers think they have solved the problem of shipping fruit from the Pacific coast. Heretofore fruit has beea Shipped to some extent to New York from California, but, owing to the decay en route, the business has not proved very prodtabie. They bave just tried the experiment of a refrigerator car with great success, aad now Predict that next year they will be able to piace California peaches, plums and apri- cote in the New York market early ip June, pearsin July and grapesin August. They intend also to ship large quantities of oranges and lemons from the lower coun- Ues,and they think that New York will even look to California for her spring lambs. ‘The friends of Genera! Batler pro’e+s to be confident of his election over his opponents, Hoar and Tarbox. A Her wid correspondent describes Butler’s fight as an exceedingly lively one, and believes the winner will be either Butler or Tarbox. ———___ -wee- — The fall meeting of the National Jockey Ciub opened today, with pleasant weather and @ brilliant attendance. The effort wo establish the running turf upon a firm basis as one of the fixed amusements of the Capi- tal gives every promise of success, and deserves the encouragement of the public. ‘There is no reason why Washington should not have as good racing as any city in the country. When conducted under the au- spices of a club of gentlemen, as in the case of the leading jockey ciubs, this is at the ‘very head of out-door sports, and the as- surance that the contests are genuine and fairly conducted is not the least of its merits. ee Pool selling in Baltimore oa the Presiden ail election bas been summarily s«juelched by the authorities, who notified the sellers that the practice is contrary to law. The selling of pools has therefore been suspended. The election laws of Maryland say that no person shall make any bet or weger on the Tesult of any election to take place in that or anyother state, uncera penalty of not less than $5) nor more than £500, to be paid to the state for the use of the schoo! fund. Money deposited on wagers, under the law, is also Liable to forfeiture. From the allegatious contained in the ter purporting to have been written by M. du Sommerard, (but which he characterizes as a forgery.) in regard to the French ex- hibit at Philadelphia, the inference would be drawn that France was greatest sufferer by the Gre of August 26th, when a large num- ber of cases of goods were destroyed. Aus- tria, Germany, Mexico, the United States, Great Britain, France, and several other countries suffered from this fre, which was doubtless an incendiary one. Great Britain lost 1,240, France 1,351, and the United States 1.48 cases. It will thus be seen that the United States suffered more severely than France by the fire in question. —_—.ee-—__ An Sppeal from a decision of considerable interest to railway travelers was heard in the New York Supreme Court on Friday. In November, 1871,one Jason Weeke arrived im New York by the New York, New Haven ‘and Sartford railroad company, being left in an unattended car, was robbed by three desperadoes of some $16,000 in government bonds and other securities. In a suit against the company he recovered a verdict for the full amount, the judge holding that thecom- pany was bound to exercise @ reasonabie Smount of diligence in protecting their pas- ‘Sengers from robbery.
