EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: MONDAY...........Oetober 30, 1876. CROSBY 5S. NOYES........Editer. paenaemeeteneoaessecenceeaee oc Beading Matter on Every Page average sworn Daily Circulation ever 15,000,-being more than The District of Columbia already takes rank as the seat of the inventive genius of the country. The annual report of the Com. missioner of Patents embraces a tabular Statement showing the number of patents issued during the year to each state and ter- ritory, and the ratio between the patents issced and the population. Very naturally, having the largest population, New York received more patents than any other state—3,771. Nextto New York comas the great state of Pennsylvania, with 2,01; next Massachusetts, with 1,:#: next [llinols, with 1,098; and next Oalo, with 1,991 patents. But the proportion of patents to popuiation :s more significant. In the preceding report of tae Commissiover Conne: led the list, Wilh the District of Culambia following, but the report for theentire year of 175 raverses the order and places the [)istrict in the van. In the District the ta>!c suows that a patent Was issued to ever: and in Connecticut to every 761 of the entire population. Mass- achuset!s stands third fo the lst, the pro portion being one to every 7s. Rhode Island follows with one to every 9i3. The least in- Venlive state, as shown by the table, is Arkansas, which received bat one patent t> every 41,012 of her population. The New York Hrraid is never —— un- less It cap get up a sensation of some kind. its latest attempt in this line is an endeavor tosbow that if Peter Cooper could get the vote of any one state the Presidential elec- tion = 7* be thrown into the House of Rap- It even suggests that the Hayes and Wheeler men in Indiana may go over to Cooper and Carey. Possible, but ex- tremely improbable. ——~ere. A friend of democratic leanings sends us the following to sbow that Tilden will be the next President. A case of this kind ts reported la Jersey C.ty, where a wo- man bitten bya cat last August died the other day with all the symptoms of bydro- phobi: ———-++e -__ The Kangor Why is in possession of a lit- erary curiosity in the shape of “The New School History of the United States,” writ- ten from a southern siand point. The rebel- Hon is denominated “The Sectional Wa and Mr. Lincoln “the sectional President.’ Gen. Botier, according to this veracious his- tory, received the name of “Beast” by the common consent of Europe and America. Jackson, who shot Col. Ellsworth, is “a patriotic martyr,” while Elisworth is char- acterized asa famous rough.” It is tobe hoped this book is not generally used in the MRS ct He Saal na 16 protebiy fs is not. It is stated that Gov. Tilden’s 1 letter on southern claims has given great offence in the state of Missouri to a large class of per- sons, formeriy rebels, who have obtained from the state certificates of indebtedness amounting to more than a million of dol- lars. These claim certificates are not paya- bie by the state until they have been pre- sented to the Ualted States government and {he amount allowed and paid to the state for ws Claimants. The democratic state commitiey® Of Kentucky and Mississippi have, however, shown their appreciation of tne situation by telegraphing to Gov. Tiiden thefr endorsement of his letter. It is be- Heved that the democratic committees of other southern states will follow outt. M. Du: Somerard, ine chief commissioner of France to the Centennial Exhibition, it Will be seen by our telegrams, brands asa forgery the letter imputed to him, charging ahat tbe Centennial authorities have been gullty of arson, and that they convive with thieves. ——~re A campaign paragraph is going the rounds to the effect that while the population of Vermont has increased but five per ceat. Since 1560, Une total expenses of the state since that time have increased from $260,000 to $416,000, or lus per cent ; the criminai ex- penses have grown from $15,000 to $72,000, or 454 per cent; and salaries and stationery bills have increased in a likeratio. This | Statement is not complete without mention- ing the fact that the state is out of debt and bas @ bandsome surpius in the treasury. The impression ts becoming more and more genera] that as goes New York so will go the Union on the 7th proximo. Since 1861 the democrats have carried the state nine times and the republicans seven. Ic 1861 the republicans carr! — the state by the rousing majority of 1,712. Next year the democrats carried it by - 732 majority. [a 1863 the repubiicaus carried the state by 405 majority, and again In 1864 by 6,74 majority. From #7 to 1570 the democrats carried the state by msjorities ranging from 10,000 to 48,000. Iu 1874 they carried It by 273,549 and last year by but majority. These Sgures show great fluctuations, and ‘tat the state is not a very safe one to lay ‘wagers on. “New York is like Wordsworth’s brook, “for men may Come and men may go, but it runs on forever,’ to the great satisfaction of the politicians who live oa it.”—[New York Herait.
