ING STAR. WASHINGTON MONDAY. carrying New York, the pivotal state in the November contest, have brightened within & few days, in the opinion of the adnerents Of that perty, through the successof Tam- many !n putting a county ticket In the field aleulated to heal some antagonisms. But it turns out that the county Ucket nominated contains some names so objectionable, that even the New Yor® Sun, zealous as it is for democratic harmony in bebalf of the success of Tilden. repudiates the nominees, urges that they should be scratched. The Tammany nominee for mayor, Smith Ely, jr..18@ respectable man, of fair abili- ties, but with no great force of character. No particular objection is made to him be- yond the fact that from his negative quali les be would naturally be rather a pliant tool for Tammany, ifelected. But some of the other nominees are of such notoriously bad character that there ts a bot outcry S@gainst them. Among these is I). C. Calvin, the nominee for surrogate, who when in Office before proved his rottenness, it is as- sSerted, by the award of nearly four hundred thousand dollars out of the city traasury to pay @ fraudulent claim. Dana charges that Jobn Kelly, tn procuring the nomination of these men, aimed, by an act of treachery, to defeat Tilden’s election, as he labored at St. Louis tovefeat his nomination. It is probable that there will be @ com- bination opposition county ticket to tne Tammany ticket, put forward by the demo- cratic elements of opposition to Tammany, and the repubileans. Andrew H. Green is likely to be the combination nominee for Comptroller. Anti-Tammany will probably Dominate Green at their county coaventign next week, and the German democratic (Ottendorfer) organization will, it is be- Meved, do the same, and the republicans fol- low sulz in their county convention on Wednesday evening. The republicans have Postponed their convention until the latest possible moment. in order that they mignt take advantage of the mistakes of their Sdversaries. There is some difference of Opinion, however, amongst the republican leaders whether anything will be gained by ® coalition with anti-Tammany. Some con- tend that a combination ticket will aid Morgan and Hayes to the extent of ten thousand votes, while others insist that a coalition will only serve to bring out the whole Gremocratic vote, and that when at the polls the disatfected democratic voters Will simply bolt the Tammany local nom!- nees and vote the state and national demo- cratic ticket. It is estimated that the entire vote in New York city will reach 140,000; of which, 90,000 are conceded to the democrats. This Would leave 50,000 for the republicans, and Give the democrats 40,000 majority. The re- Ppublicans claim the ability to overcome 40,000 majority in New York city, in the state at large; but it is by no means certain that the democrats will rest content with 40,000 majority in the city. Some of them say, with a Tildenish droop of the left eye- lid, that they intena to vote by the bar’! full. But the republicans rely upon “little Jobnpy Davenport” to see that the demo- cratic voting is not too unanimous. ———_—-< About the Senate. The New York Herald prints an article on the next United States Senate, which con- tains several mistakes. It gives a list of twenty-five Senators whose terms expire on the 3d of March next, and includes the names of Anthony, of Rhode Island; Johnston, of Virginia, and Howe, of Wisconsin. Senator Anthony was re-elected during the present year, and his new term does not expire until March 3, 183. Senator Jobnston was re elected last year and goes out at the same date. Senator Howe's present term does not expire until Mareh 3, 1579, more than two years hence. The Herald omits in its list the bame of Senator West, of Louisiana, whose term of service expires next Maren. The outgoing Senators on the $d of March next bumber twenty-three, as follows: Goldth- waiteof Alabama, Clayton of Arkansas Saulsbury of Delaware, Norwood of Georgia Logan of illinois, Wright of Iowa, Harvey of Kansas, Stevenson of Kentucky, West of Louisiana, Morrill (or rather Blaine) of Maine, Boutwell of Massachusetts, Ferry of Michigan, Windom of Minnesota, Alcorn of Mississipp!, Hancock of Nebraska, Cragin of New Hampshire, Frelinghuysen of New Jersey, Ransom of North Carolina, Kelly of Oregon, Robertson of South Carolina, Cooper of Tennessee, Ham!lion of Texas and Davis of West Virginia. There are eight democrats in this list, and Mot nine as the Meraid states, viz: Mesars. Goldthwaite, Saulsbury, Norwood, Stevea- son, Ransom, Kelly, Davis and Cooper; thirteen republicans, viz: Messrs. Clayton, Logan, Wright, Harvey, West, Blaine, Bout- well, Ferry, Windom, Alcorn, Hitchcock, Cragin and Frelinghuysen, and two inde pemdent republicans— Messrs Robertson and Hamilton. Hamilton's successor, already chosen, is @ democrat, and it is certain that | Messrs. Guidthwaite, Ciaytoa, Sauisbury, | Norwood, Stevensun, West, Alcorn, Fre. | lingbuysen, Hansom, Kelly, Roverteon, | ¥ Cooper and Davis will be succeeded by dem. ocrats. The Pinchback vacancy in Louist- ana will probably be filled by @ democrat, | and the vaeaney occasioned by the death of | Caperion, of West Virginia, is certain to be | filled by @ democrat. Tue Senate is now | composed of forty-one repubiteans. twenty- nine democrats, and three ind pubdlicans—Messrs. Booth, Robertson and | Hamilton. Colorado will probably send two | republican Senators, and {t ts expected that | the successors of Messrs. Logaa, Wright, tiarvey, Blaine, Boutweil, Ferry, Windom, Hitekeock and Cragin will be repubditcans, It Is easy to see from this statement that the next Senate will be dividet very closely as far parties are concerned. It is not | impossible that the democrats may have a small mejority. At any rate, the present republican majority will be materially re- duced. = — ee It is @ pity that at the beginning of the political campaign in South Carolina Gen- eral Hampton and Governor Chamberlain had not requestea their tituents to leave thelr rifles and shot guns at home when they attended political meetings. This very bad practice seems to have led to ali the troable in that unbappy state. On the whole the campaiga in North Caro- lina seems to have been ver7 unilke that of South Carolina. On Saturday last Jad, Settle and ex-Governor Vance, the repudil- can and democratic candidates for governor respectively, closed their joint canvass at Swift Creek. The candidates congratulated each otner and ali the people of North Caro- Hina opon the uniform courtesy, fairness, Sood feeling and good order which had characterized the fifty-eight contests of the rand joint campaign, and shook hands amid loud appiaase. EE As the cay for closing the great at Centennial exhibition approaches the attendance ia- creases rather than diminishes. The at- tendance and receipts last week exceeded that of any other week, but In the opinion Of the officers they will be surpassed by tae aa ere ‘There is nothing like taking ume by the forelock.
