EVENING STAR. WA*HINGTON: WFPNFEPAY.... October 11, 1976, ——————————————— Chern? & BOT M........Balter occar from that cause The Elections. In consequence of the evormous vote polled in Indians and Obio and the number of names on the tickets for state and county officers and members of Congress, the count bas been unusually slow, and the returns fragmentary and scattering. As @ conse- quence, from the closeness of the vote and the fiuetnating nature of the gains for either party in different loca'ities, at a late hour this morning, when the morning papers went to press, neither side was in & position to claim & positive victory im either state. In Obio the republicans had made gains in the country part of the state, which had been offset by losses in the cities, but still leaving them tn @ position to expect to be able tobold the majority by which Hayes Was clected last year, and probably do Something better. The reports also indi- cated that they had made some gains in Congressmen, but not to the extent coupted upon. Thus the confident expectation that Judge Stanley Mathews would beat Ban- Ding (dem.) in the 21 district, and which was generally conceded by the democrats, was not realized. On the other hand, they Bad, according to report, saved Charley Foster in the 10th district, where they had expected a loss. Oo the same authority they had gsined a Congressman (Judge Cox) in the 6th district, and another (Townsend) in the 20th district. From Indiana the returns were still more Confused and perplexing, and while from republican sources dispatches came that Harrison had carried the state, yet the re turns as they came in only indicated small Tepublican gains on the vote of 1871, when the democratic mejority was 17,252. But then it had to be taken into consideration that this democratic majority embraced the 16.223 votes cast for the Farmers’ candidate for secretary of state. As there wore yester- tay three candidates In the field for gover- nor, (!pciuding the greenback candidate,) it remained to be seen how the greenback vote would affect the general result now. Oa the whole the republicans were inclined to hope beat Harrison would run sufficiently ahead of bis ticket to be elected by a squeeze. Tue reports, also, gave them some encourage ment to believe that they gained @ Congress- man in the 5th (Hoilman’s) district, and in the 7th (Lander’s). The democrats, from the indecisive natare of the returns, especially from Ohio, seemed disposed to seize a victory, anyhow, aud with a band and procession raised itvelier echoes about town than they have for the iaat sixteen hungry years. ‘This forenoon the smoke has lifted a little from the battlefield, and a more general ides. of the drift of gains and losses can be obtained. The later returns seem to show that the republicans will carry Onto by an increased majority to that of Hayes last year, and that they have gained another Congressman tn place of Banning. Tbe returns from Indiana this forenoon are also somewhat better for the republi- #08, and indicate that they may possibly carry the state by @ shave, and also make gains of two or three Congressmen. ————_ eo The Later Returns. The run of the returns from Onio this af tertoon vorabie to the republicans, in- dicating yw but steady gain for them ip the rural districts gufficient apparently to more than offset their losses in the cities. There can be little doubt that they have elected Barnes by at jeast five thousand ma- Jority, and from the tendency of gains in the country part of the state it would not be strange if the majority for the rest of the Ueket should creep up to ten or fifteen thou sand when full returns are received. The later returns also indicate that the repubil- cams have gained four or five members of Congress in Ohio. From Indiana, also, the dispatches this afternoon are encouraging for the republi- ans, though they donot yet afford positive data for the assurance that they have over- come the heavy democratic majority of 1374, of over seventeen thousand, The republii- cans, however, seem to have good ground for believing that they have gained twoor three members of Congress in Indians. On the whole, the republicans can claim the fruits of substantial victory in the elections yesterday, though it is net quite decisive enough to settle the Presidential question off band, as had been fondly hoped by those who hate the tarmo!! and mud-tling- ing of a Presidential election. Apparently the war will have to be contiaued up to the Tth of November, and the fleid of contest Will now be cbanged to New York State. Where the great deciding battle of tae cam- paign will be fought ae The Next House. An interesting subject for discussion now is the status of the House in the Forty aftth Congress. The foliowing estimate is made by & cool observer, who, though democratic in bis affinities, is not in any sense a politi- cian. He arrives at the estimate mentioned for Iilimois by conceding the three Chicago members to the republicans: 2| New Hamps=! hire ia Forward... ... 19 The tabulator, in arriving conclusion, maintains that it wiil be to the advantage of bis (democratic) party to have thetr heavy majority in the House whittled down to a fair working majority; and that ail the great blunders committed by the democratic House last session were due to the fact that thelr majority was so excessive. Dr. Slade, the American spiritualist now under arrest in London for vagrancy and swindling, seems to have some influential adherents on the other side of the water, who express the determination of “‘secing him through,” and to that end have subscribed a considerable amount of money, aud have appointed a committee to watch the case. Professor Lanxester, who caused his arrest, Swears positively that he ssw Siade write “spiritual” messages on the siate, bat how ever that may be, there are said to be bi dreds who are willing to make oath that he does not write these messages. Mr. Jennings, the London correspondest of the New York World, writes that Slade has been making money t the rate of $1,000 a week, and that RADIANT HOME BASE BURNER, 1876 a a RADIANT HOME BASE BURNER, ovement of great value be Badiact Home "ites con! with ‘oF = hi wating by for yourself, and CHR.
