EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY... September 2s, 1876, CROSBY 8. NOYES........Editer. Average meorn Daily Circulation ever 15,000,—being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal te that of ali the ot daily papers in the city added together. nett Sh Notice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for pubtice- tion or im regard to business will oblige us and best serve their own purposes by addressing them simply to the “Evrto oF THe Stak” or the “Pustisuen ov Tax Stam,” asthe case may be. When addressed personally they are regarded as private letters, and fm cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently eccur from that cause. — —+20e- New York, Next. In the possibility that the elections in In- diana and Ohio may result indecisively as to showing with any certainty how the na- tional contest will end in November, the Politicians are beginning to estimate the Possibilities and probabilities in New York, Whieh state will have a weighty voice in determining who is to be our next President. The democrats have put that state down as certain for Tilden, and tne republicans have usually claimed it for Hayes, though some Of the calculators of this party have not un- @ertaken to raise it beyond the list of “doubtful.” The confidence of the demo cratic claim is based upou the great major- ity by which Tilden was elected Governor im 1871, which bas been set down in round pumbers, as inthe vielnityof 50,000. To the cursory look this is an adverse majority al- most impossible to overcome, but the re- pubdlicans meet the odjeciion by the fullow- ing figuring: In the first place, Tilden was not elected by 50,000 majority in 1874, nor by 40,000. Here 1s the vote: Tilden, dem Democratic majority. As there is no temperance question at issue between Tilden and Hayes, the latter ig pretty sure, thé republicans say, of getting this third-party vote nearly solid. But 1874 was the “ tidal-wave” year, when everything was against the republicans. Last year that “ wave” bad nearly subsided in New York, and by this time it is heaving up oa the republican side. Here is the vote last fali with Tilden governor, and the enormous patronage of the state at his disposal: Democratic majority. 3; ‘This is a very trifling majority in a poll of Bearly 500,000 votes. Leaving out the tem- perance vote the democratic majority was only 14,810 over the repablicans, which shows @ loss of nearly 36,000 on that secured the year before, though it is asserted the demo crats made great efforts to maintain their former majority. Tilden recetved at least 25,000 “liberal republican” votes in 1574; last fall bis party probably retained half of them; this fall, according to republican estimates, they will not hold five per cent. of the liber. als. In 1574 there were not less than 69,000 republicans who absented themselves from the polls, whereas the democrats brought out pearly their full strength and receive! the large liberal reinforcement besides, which they bave since lost. Tne following figures are given as showing the falling off in the republican vote: Dix, for Governor, in 1872...... Dix, for Governor, in 1874. 445,301 4 Falling of in republican vote.... Be Here was @ falling off in the pantions Vote of nearly 50,000. Take tne other side Kervan, for Governor, tn 1572. Tilden, for Goveruor, iu 1574. Increase of democratic vote This tucrewse represents just about the umber of liberal votes for Tilden that year, most of which are pow claimed for Hayes. The highest Presidential vote ever cast by the democrats in New York was for Sey- mour,in 1568, which was 429 83, and that ‘was when the enormous frauds, as charged by the republicans, were perpetrated in the cities of New York and Brooklyn, whereby Seymour's vote was swollen more than 30,000 by bogus ballots and forged natural- ization papers. This fall the republican Voters of New York are united, and all pull- ing together. Reckoning the natural in- crease of the republican voters in the last four years at 30,000, which is the same as be. tween 1568 and 1872, Gov. Hayes wiil receive 470,000 votes. To beat this, Tilden will have to increase his vote this fall over that which be received two years ago 54,000; and that, too, after losing the 25,000 liberals who voted for bim in 1574, and who are now in the main supporting Hayes. According to the republican estimate he 1s Dot going to get 53,000 majority in New York and Brooklyn this fali,as he did in 1874; and they do not allow him more than balf that majority in those cities. The re- publicans hold that if they carry either Ohio or Indiana in October they will carry New York state ind November. Am Ex-Premier « a a ihe Way to to Adver- Mr. Gladstone, Biope premier of England, ®aid in @ recent speech: “It appears, if we consult those who have been most accustomed te make effective use of this extraordinary instrument, that it cepends wholly — Producing an impres- sion upon the public mind by iteration, or by the repetition of the same thing.” This is really a matter of fact, and trades- men and merchants have doubled and trebled their business by persistent repeated advertising. The greenback convention at Albany, New York, on Tuesday, was moderately respect- able in numbers, and highly so in character Having no offices to dispose of and no pro- spective spoils for distribution, and no bonors for anybody, the new party is free from the whole crowd of strikers, bummers ‘and bangers-on that infest the ranks of par- Ues who have some hope of success. The convention nominatet Richard M. Griffin, Qditor of the Albany Fvening Post, for gover- nor, and Thomas Armstrong for lieutenant governor. The venerable Peter Cooper, the candidate of the greenbackers for the Presi- dency, was present and madea speech in theevening. Nobody has a hard word to say of the venerable philanthropist, but this is perbaps due to the fact that he does not | stand in the way of anybody. The Graphic, however, suggests that ‘if the October elec- tions go against the democrats they wili fad it very easy to switch off the Tilden engine ‘and attach their train to Cooper, who never cheated the tax gatherer, nor wrecked a railroad, nor conspired with Tweed, nor aided the rebels, nor stole a horse, nor melted up bis grandmother to give consistency to bis glue.” ‘We call attention to the e'oquent appeal by Rev. Dr. Cuthbert, in another columa, in behalf of the sufferers by the yellow fever in Savapnueh. He writes from the heart and from a full experience of the horrors of this Gread scourge. What is done in benalf of ‘the sufferers must be doue quickly, aad it is wo be hoped that the churches and benevo- lent organizations of this District will take the maiter in hand, as suggested; aod that every individual who is willing t> spare something in the cause of humanity will come forward with bis his contribution, ‘The news from Europe ali tends | to show that Russia means to fight Turkey upon the soll of Servia.
