When addressed personally they are regarded as private letters, and a The explosion of the Heli Gate mine has been fixed for Suaday at three o'clock in the afternoon; that heur being high tide. San- day has been selected on the ground tnat the river will be less crowded with vessels then than on @ week day. The work of priming the blasts will be completed to day, and on to-morrow the mines will be flooded with | : | BAY RUM! Bay RUM! water by means of a syphon. The New York papers generally are see! ing to allay the panic In regard to the prob- able effects of the expiosion, but as fast as oue point of apprenensioa is shown to be fal- lacionus another is raised. Tne latest seare is @t the expense of those who live in tall houses; and many do in and around New York city. The fact is enlarged upon for their benefit that all forms of nitro glycerine spend most of their force downward, as the first box did when it dug a hole in the side- walk on Hudson street. From this it is ar- gued that very little rock or even water wil be thrown upward into the air, but that the explosion will shake the reef to its founda- tovs, and that the greatest force of it will be felt by those who stand, or whose dwell- ing rests on the soil directly over this range or ledge of rocks, of which Hallet’s Point reef is but @ very small outcropping. The stratum of gneiss rock, the Graphic Says, which has been penatrated rans north- ast and south, passing through Ward’s and Blackwell's isian¢s just beneath the insane asylums oneach. Whether it extends as far @s Manhattan island or not ts not knowp, and at the point where it would be found if Continued in @ right line no reck has been nearer than seventy or eighty feet below the surface of the earth. The tallest buildings in the neighborhood are the Inebriate asylum, Insane asylum, Soldiers’ Home, and emigration buildings on Ward’s island, and the House of the Good Shepherd and Ebret’s and Rupert’s breweries in New York, between Eighty-ninth and Ninety- second streets, the East river and Third ave- nue. Astoria does not abonnd in tall build- ings. These strata do not always lie in a Straight line, and it may be that the whole of Biackwell’s island, which is well known to be almost @ solid mass of rock, is the con- tinuation of this stratum, or thai the stra- tum runs in @direct line uader the bed of the East river and reappears in the high bluff at Eighty-fourth street. In either case the New York shore is protecte4 by the « deep river channel which lies westward of Black- Well’s island. ——<e-__. While the republicans will be apt to make Congressional gains in Pennsylvania, Onio, Indiana, New York, Itlinols, and other northern and western states where they lost by the land-slide of 1874, the democrats will doubtless gain some Congressmen in the south,—in South Carolina, for instance, in which all five of the districts are now represented by republicans. Thede.ocrats Will probably gain two of these districts at the coming election, the 3dand 4th. In the Sd district there are 15,295 whites to 20,918 biacks; in the 4th there are 15,970 whites to 19,75 blacks. In the other three districts the blacksare so largely in the preponder. ance that the whites have little hopes of carrying them, even by the aid of “the Mississipp! system.” ———ee-—___ American Horse is @ sarcastic Sioux cuss. At the council in the Biack Hills country on the 19th inst., that chief made afew re marks to the effect that the soldiers had no business there, at the Red Cioud ageacy; if they wanted to arrest anybody let them go ‘and arrest the bad men at the north—mean- ing Sitting Ball and his followere—where- upon there was “laughter on the part of the Indians.” This may be the Sioux idea of a good joke on Bishop Whipple and his peace. ful coadjutors and armed backers, but the ‘Whites at the council didn’t appear to see it. ————-ee-____. As the vote in Indians is likely to be close, ‘& good deal of interest is felt in the question ‘which party will suffer most from the action Of the independent greeabackers. Ithas been claimed in some democratic quarters that three-fifths of the greenback vote wiil come from the republicans, and that if that vote amounts to 15,000 the democrats will carry the state. Blue Jeans Williams, the demo- cratic candidate for Governor, who has been interviewed by a correspondent of the Chi- cago Times, (dem.) expreszes the opinion that the independent vote will bedrawn about equally from the two parties, and points out the coraparative vote in 1872 and 1574 in Greene, Pize and Sullivan counties, in the second district; in Lawrence, Monroe and Vigo,of the eighth, and in Boone and Mont- gomery, of the ninth, to show that the inde- pendent vote has been taken in about equal Proportions from the republicans and demo- crats. Dan Voorhees, however, stoutly com. bats Williams’ views on this point, and TMalotains the paradoxical idea that the ex- istenee of the independents is & good thing for thedemocracy, and that their withdrawai would be equally good. The way he figures this out Is by claiming that while the inde- pendents are largely composed of republi- cabs, in ease they disbanded they would natu- rally gravitate toward the democracy, for the reason that the republican platform op= owes the repeal of the resumption act, and is bard money all through. SSS The difficulty and expense of establishing & rst cleas daily paper in Eagland seem to be as great as in this country, despite the general belief that the British newspapers are rather slow going and inexpensively managed. The Hour, a conservative journal, Which at one time bad quite @ run in Lon- don, both im circulation and advertising, succumbed a few weeks ago, after having changed bands three times, and nearly bank- rupting all its different propriewrs. At one time it had an advertising patronage worth $5,500 & week, yet during the three years and @ balf ! which it was published it sunk, over and above all its earnings, not less than $350,006! The Printers’ Register, an exesilient authority on the subject, estimates that a London daily paper, even under the most and economical management, cannot live with less circulation than 20,000 @ day and $3,000 worth of advertise- ments per week. We may add, in this con- nection, that the publisher of The Echo, half penny paper of wide circulation in Lon- don, shows that the total ex pense of pubdlish- ing it last year amounted to the sum of 8226 500. — The New York World has got so much en- listed in the work of establishing the exist- «nee of yellow fever in Baltimore that it Seems to consider the Presidential election & mere side issue, and is neglecting Mr. Til- Gen’s interests in the most shameful manner. ———s= ‘Bareas Le: for sale or pxcuen .
