EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ISDAY... September 21, 1876. CROSRY 8. NOYES........Editor. Beading Matter on Every Page Hotice to Correspoudeats. Persons writing letters to this office for pablica- ‘ion or in regard to business will obtige us and best eerve their own purposes by addressing them simply to the“ Eprron oF Tux 8742” or the“ Prstuaee ov Tus STAR,” asthe ease may be. When addressed personally they are regarded an private letters, and absence inconvenient delays frequently occur from that canse. The Gothamite Scare. Judging by the New York papers the People there arein an agony of terror over the possibility of being blown sxy high by the coming explesion of dynamite beneath heriver bed at Hell Gate. General New- ton, the engineer in charge, asserts that the ar from the explosion will be hardly appre- Siable, even by those residing in the imme- ‘iate vicinity, but other engineers supposed to be familiar with the action of explosives believe that he underrates the effect of the @xplosion of this immense mass of dyna- Mite. These opinions by experta have tended to unsettle the nerves of the Gotham. ites, and It Is stated that a good many People will leave the city on the day of the @xpicaion, and that residents along the river front are in many cases propping up chim. Beys and making ready for the dreadfal earthquake. The officers in charge of the mining operations, however, utterly scout all these apprehensions, and give thedats for their belief that the expiesion will be harm. less, Leyond the possible shattering of alittle Window-glass in the neighborhood. They explain that the explosives to be fired are divided Into comparatively small charges, packed away in nearly 4,000 small holes the rock. Farther, the gaileries flooded with water to the level the tide; and the charges being tamped the water confined in the galleries to perform their fall work Will be compelled the time appointed for the discharge to take plas, but only toeseape the falling plaster from the ceilings, and not from any fear of a demolition of the buildings. Every precai tion will be taken to prevent aay one ap- proaching the firing point on the day of the explosion. A cordon is to b? drawn com- pletely around the works, both ou land and water. There are eight direct approaches to the excavations, and at each of these, United States troops will be stationed, supported by police. On the water a rigid corioa will be maintained to prevent the approach of any Vessels to the scene of danger. In conse- quence of a delay in getting the requisite amount of dynamite it is not probable that the explosion will take place this week, but it ishinted that it may come offon Sunday next, and If the expectations of the officers in charge are fulsilled it will make so little atmospheric disturbance that the New York- rs will not know that it has happened until told by the papers the next morning. ——__-sse-__— ‘Tweed, the New York plunderer, and Sharkey, the New York murderer, are both to be brought home in the same ship—the U. 8. 8. Franklin. Two such Jonahs for one boat is extra hazardous, but it is hoped they Will make the trip safely, and meet the wel- come they deserve. —.ee—__ There is a troublesome third element in Indiana politics this fall in the shape of an independent greerback ticket. The “Inde- pendent Greenback party” has a fail state Ueket in the field, is running Congressmen in ten of the districts of the state, aad has @n organization in nearly forty counties. It is not entirely a new movement, for the so called “ Farmers’ party” of 1374, which polled S@bout 18,000 votes, was substantially the same thing. The number.of voters in th greenback crowd are variously estimated; butin a state like Indiana, where, out of a total vote of 377,000, ten thousand is consid- ered @ large majority either way, it is not impossible that there may be enough of these lunatics to affect the result. It seems to be uncertain, too, which party will be most affected by thé greenback diversion. ‘The democrats do not fight it, although they have lost somewhat by desertions to it; bat they assume that it will draw two votes from the republican rapks to one from their own. The Bail Papers of the same party complexion as the New York World think that paper is very good authority on politi- cal affairs, but ® very bad one on sanitary matters—fevers, for instance. — <<. Business continues hopeful in New York. ‘The Post says: The principal New York hotels are now unusually crowded with guests from ali of the country, many of whom, it is , are on their way to the Centennial ex- on bond oye 8 others py Ser visiting © purpose of bu goods.
