EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY... September 20, 1876, CROSBY 5. NOYES. daily paper tn Washington, and | equal te that of all the ether daily papers im the city added | together. Hotice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for publica- tion or im regard to businces will oblige us and best dressing them simply or the “Pcntuese "as the case may be. When ip cases of abvence inconvenient delays frequently Occur from that cause 202+ Our Centennial Visitors. ‘This Centennial summer has most agreea- bly, and somewhat unexpectedly, brought to us great numbers of visitors to view our | elty and public buildings. It is dotbtiess a Manifestation of love of country, and it is @n encouraging sign of prosperity and good feeling to find persons from every state vis- | iting the capital of their nation. Tne time | ‘Was when most of the pablic offices in Wash- ington were filled by clerxs chiefly from the states adjacent to the District of Columbia. The changed condition of the population and society in Washington bas brought here to reside many persons of note from every state, 80 that visitors from the remotest parts of the Republic now find here friends and neigh- bors. Washington is becoming in fact, as it is in theory, the nationa! city—a city in Which the whole country has, and of right ought to have, an interest and pride. This feeling is now, we believe, manifesting itself in the great influx of visitors who come to spend @ cay or two in Washington, and in visiting Mt. Vernon. Congressof late takes this; view, and is more liberal and national in her treatment of the District and in the assistance she gives for developing and im- Proving the capital of the country. Every American citizen should feel at home in ‘Washington, and every one hasa claim upon all pfficers and dignitaries who reside here. It is the duty of the press of the city, also, to Welcome visitors cordially and in all ways Possible make their stay here agreeable and interesting, so that they will carry away ‘With them pleasant recollections of our city and its peopie. ‘We see in these visits evidences of national Pride, patriotism, and good will, which are certain to exercise vast influence in popu- Jarizing our city with the mass of the people, and assist in its future development. It Would baye been a considerate and thing for our citizens or city offi- Cials to have appointed a committee to Welcome the streams of visitors from the states which every day pour into Washing- top, and to give them all needful infor- mation of bow to reach the Capitol nd tbe different public buildings, &nd bow most conveniently to visit the va- rious places of interest in and around Wash- ington. It 1s not too late to remedy, in part, this omission, and we would suggest that ‘the officers in charge of the Capitol detail @ number of persons, wearing appropriate badges, to show visitors how to reach the different halls and places of interest in the building. Two or three females might, with Propriety, be temporarily employed to di- rect ladies in the Capitol, which would add Mauch to the comfort of such visitors. Mejor Richards, too, could do much to re- eve the anxiety and add to the comfort of Visitors if he would place officers at the railroad stations, wearing an appropriate badge that would at once point them out @8 persons to give information. If he Could spare the men, one could be em- Ployed advantageously at the Smithso nian Institution, another at the Patent Office, and also one at the Treasury depart. ™ment. The various state organizations hav pg rooms in the city might extend to the Visitors from the different states, invitations to call, and when large delegations from different states are here they might have lupehes provided for them at particular hours of theday. Here, too, they might re- ceive letters, dispatches and information on Various matters of interest to them. These hasty suggestions are thrown out that others may taink of them, and if ap- Proved, take such measures as will welcome and make as agreeable as possible the visits Of all our friends from every part of our great country. +2 -___ Mr. Watterson, of Kentucky, “laughed” ‘when & newspaper interviewer asked him if be was @ candidate for the Speakership, and remarked that it isa place which, like the Irishman’s horse, has but two qualities—it is very hard to caten, and it is not worth BAving after it is caught, particularly the oming short session, to which no patronage Or power is attached, but plenty of work and ® poor show of praise. Still we think Mr. Watterson would laughingly accept the office if it was thrust upon him. ———_2--____ Mr. Bowles figures out that Charles Fran- cis Adams may be elected governor of Massachusetts even if the state goes for Hayes by 40,000 majority. This is the way be does it. The probibitionists, labor re- formers apd woman suffragists are united Upon & brisk campaign for Mr. Baker for governor, and they are likely to control 15,000 votes. This will reduce Mr. Rice's Majority to 25,000, and this will require 12,500 other republicans to vote for Mr. Adams for governor in order toclecthim. Mr. Bowles believes that !t Is an even chance that so many will do it, and he wouid not be sur- prised if, counting the prohibitiontsts, 30,090 were to desert Governor Rice. But he seems to overlook the possibility of @ defection to Adams in the ranks of the democracy. It is Stated that at the democratic ratification meeting at Faneut! Hall, every mantion of the name of Adams was received with a Storm of hisses, and that the hall was Hooded with hand-bills denouncivg Adams for bis want of sympathy with the Fenian Prisoners when he was minister to England. It would seem probabie that this feeling of hostility to Adams by the powerful Irish Wing Of the Massachusetts democracy would MAKE itself felt at the polls. ———-<ee- Tne N.Y.
