To save the veasels from breaking from their moorings additional hawsers were rigged. Some of the timber, which was afloat, was floated on the wharves. BAD FOR THE TREES. In every seciion of the District shade trees were blown down. The whole row of Lom- bardy poplars on B street south, from 12th to Tith street east, was laid flat,some being sna off. Trees on New York avenue, between 10th and 11th streets; corner of 11th and E streeis; M street, between 9th and loth; 10th, between E and F; 10th, between C sureet and Pennsylvania avenue; on P st., near the Circle, were blown down, and in South Wasbington there is scarcely a square ireea. On Saturday it was mentioned in Tas STAR that Darius Harris bad obtained an order for @ writ of habeas corpus returnable 10-day to recover possession of Kitty Ellen Harris, @ cbild five years old, who he cha) ig unlawfully detainea by Luc; Lucy Webster bad had Harris fore the Police Court and held charge of abducting the same child. On the part of the peti- toner, Kitty Ellen’s uncles, Charles aud Dennis Boswell, her aunt Elizabeth Bos- well, and Isber Fairfax, testified that the child's mother was Laura Boswell, and she died in Charles Boswell’s house, having be- fore her death requested that the child be raised in the family. Lucy Webster offered testimony similar to that given in the Police Court; tnat the mother gave her the child before she died, and that the child bad not been sayoertes by Harris. This testimony was met by that of the Fairfax woman, that she had been paid $4. month for the ceeees of the child when she had her, and that Lucy Webster had offered to take the child for $2 a month, and bad done so and received pay from Har- ris up to February last.
