The republican majority in Maine now foots up about 16,000, or so near the sweeping September majority in tbe last presidential year, 1°72, that even the arithmetic man of the New York World abandons the eifort to figure out a “percentage” gain for the de- mocracy calculated to giveany encourage- ment of the ability to carry closer states. It is claimed, however, that different influences Will prevall with the voters of the West, than with those of New England, and that the October elections in Indiana and Ohio will show more accurately the true inwa-dness of the popular heart upon the national issues to be decided in November. It is doubtless true that the way the peopie of Ohio and Indiana will vote cannot be positively determined by the vote in the extreme northern states, but there has been Do insiance in which the Presidential candi- date of the party carrying these northern States by these September majorities hag not been elected. This year, it is true, the Possibility that the southern states may go Solid for Tilden gives some founiation for the claim that the usual rule will not work, It is certainly true that ali eyes are now turned towards Indianaand Ohio, and that both parties are making tremendous @fforts to carry these states in October, as Settling the national contest. Tbe repuDil- cans have this advantage in the campaiga that they can afford to lose Indiana and still @lect Hayes, while it is necessary for the election of Tilden that Indiana shall be car- ried by the democrats in October. To elect him requires that he shall, in addition to the Votes of the southern states, get the votes of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Cali- fornia, and Indiana. He must get both New York and Indiana in any event. He has no Prespect of carrying any one of the states of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Wis- consin, Iowa, and Ohio. In New England his only possible state is Connecticut. The vote of the whole ex-siaveholding states is 138. Of these, South Carolina has 7, re- ducing all others to 131. It will require 185 Votes to elect. But the republicans have a Prospect of carrying Louisiana, 8; Missis- sippi, 8; Florida, 4; total 20. Th ill leave Tilden 111, subject to @ possible loss of North Carolina, 10. His vote in the south Will, on this reckoning, be 101 votes, leaving him 81 to get. For these he looks to New York 35, New Jersey 9, California 6, Qon- necticut 6, Indiana 15, Oregon 3,—total, 74, leaving him 11 short of an election. But assuming that he gets North Carolina 10, &nd 10 other votes from the other states, he Will have at the utmost 194, including 1f- diana. The loss of Indiana reduces his pos- sible vote to 179. Reports from Indiana say that Senator Morton and other sazacious party leaders are confident of tne success of the republican ticket in October. To out- siders, however, it would look as if the republicans would have uphill work to Wrest the state from the democracy, who carried it in the October election in i372 by 1,148 majority. (though Grant carried the state by 22.515 in November,) and by a Sweeping majority in 1374, when the demo- The October Elections. The distribution of mer- chandise to the interior continues on a large scale, and its volume so far this fall is in ad- vance of any previous season since 1873. The active export demand for ficur and ‘wheat at steadily advancing prices is one of the latestand most favorable signs of the general situation. An earnest effort is being made by the ad- ‘vocates of the international or Metric sys- tem of weights and measures to procure its adoption in the United States.
