EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY... September 13, 1876. CROSBY 8. NOYES.......-Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page Notice to Persons writing letters to this office for pablica- tion or in regard to business will oblige us and best wn purposes by addressing them simply ov TER Stak” of the“ PrstisuEe ‘as the case may be. When addressed personally they are regarded as private letters, and in cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently occur trom that canse, ~ -22- A ‘Sola Democratic senth. According to Mr. Redfield, the veteran po- tical commissioner of the Cincinnati Q- mercial, who is now in South Carolina, that state is quite likely to go democratic. He | ‘Writes that the state is aroused as it has not been since the war; that the whites are United as they never have bean, and that White republicans who are not office-hoiders ‘@re as scarce as whales in the Oaio river. The whites are united and “determined to carry the election,” while the republicans @re split into @ Chamberlain faction and an @ntlChamberiain faction. The colored leader, Elliott, says that if Chamberlain is nominated he will vote for Hampton. Judge Mackay says if Chamberlain is not nomi- nated he will vote for Hampton. On the other hand the democrats are con- ducting the campaign on the “Mississippi plan.” The whites are forming “rifle clubs,” Smaher clubs,” “rifle teams,” cavalry compa- nies and soon. It is not in the programme to shed biood, but merely to show the biacks that the whites are determined to carry the election, and that it would be best for “our colored friends” to join the good work, and save themselves from the wrath tocome. It ison the programme not to let a single re- publican meeting be heid, little or big, with- out the democrats being on hand to demand “division of time.” If the repablicans re- fuse, then take part of the timsanyway, and g0 to speaking. The democrats are forming colored clubs in every county. Having set out to carry the election, they are not close with the ex- pense account, and are buying up colored Voters right and left, when they can be had in no other way. Two citizens of Greenville are out with @ proposition to be two of four hundred in the state to give #500 each to raise $200,000 as @ campaign fand, which is really to be used In the purchase of the blacks. If six or seven thousand can be bonght it wili give the democrats the state, Mr. Redfield says. We suppose he means if the demo- crats secure that number in addition to those secured without the aid of money. There @re 415,814 blacks in the state to 239,667 Whites, and it would therefore require the Votes of more than six or seven thousand blacks to give the democrats the majority, unless by the use of the “Mississippi pian,” or some other means, the colorei voters were detached from their party, or intimida- ted from going to the polis. The democrats declare that the election of Tilden is @ secondary consideration; that their main point is to elect Hampton and get the legislature, and “redeem the state from tne biighting effects of the rule of the ignorant.” ———~~e-—__. Wasbington as a Place of Residence. President (rant has been interviewed again at Long Branch by the indefatigable reporter of the New York Herald. Upon the political campaign the President expressed the opin- ion that if the republicans carry Onio and Indiana next month the democrats haye not ® ghost of @ chance in November. He de. clared his purpose to visit Europe after the close of his Presidential term, and indicated that on his return he should provably settle down in Washington. To the inquiry wheth- er in his experience Washington is not, at least, as expensive as New York, the Pres- ident replied :—“Oh, no! The reat of a first rate house in New York, in the best locality, would be as much as [ could live for io ‘Washington. In Washington the only item Of great expensivenees consists of entertain- ments, and these @ man can limit according to his means and pleasure. | suppose I shall Settle in Washington. I feel at home there. I feel more identified with it than any other city.” Unlike the case in Vermont, the republi- can majority in Maine seems to increase as the fuller returns come in. It looks now as tf, when the whole vote is in, the majori- ty will foot up in the neighborhood of 16,000 +02 —___ ‘The Servians seem to be holding their own lately, and there are more and more evi- dences that Russia is determined to give them open aid as well as covert sympathy and support, rather than allow them to be crushed out by the Turks. Atthe sametime Turkey is earning the moral hostility of tne leading European nations by the atrocities committed in Bulgaria, and should Russia decide to go into the field openly in bena!f of the Servians they will probably not make any great opposition, though in the end they Will doubtless interfere to prevent Russia fiom seizing apy portion of the coveted ter- ritory of Turkey. 08+ The New York Bulletin thinks there is no Wistaking now the manifestations of im- Proved and improving trade. Commercial exchanges from all parts of the country for the week ending on Saturday last bear testi- mony to the fact, supported by such con- Vincing details as must put incredulity at rest. pu CIDER VINEGAR, made in Mi county, Md, Purity gunrautecd. |" NO=wOmOT? c.C BRYAN, sepls st Cor. 16th and I streets northwest.
