a EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY.....September 7, 1876. CROSBY 8. NOYEX........Editor. PI enn ht ster Beading Matter on Every Page Persons writing letters to this office for publica- tion or in regard to business will oblige us and best serve their own purposes by addressing them simply to the “ Evrrom oF THE Stak” or the “PcstisHER ov Tux STAR,” asthe case may be. When addressed personally ¢ in cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently occur from that cause. ———__-~ee. The Vermont Election. After all, the democrats are apie to pick Up some crumbs of comfort from the Ver- mont election, as they have nearly doubled their vote of 1874, and have in the cities and Populous towns in many instances made larger gains than the republicans. They have carried the republican town of Ben-~ Bington, and have made large gains in Man- chester, Arlington, Brattieboro,Rutland and ‘Vergennes. Still the fact remains that on a full vote the republicans are able to carry the state by nearly their flood-tide majori- ties of the past. The result indicates that they will be able to carry every northern state in November, with some doubt per- haps in the case of New Jersey and Connec- tieut. The fact that the democrats in Ver- Mont have made their gains in the cities and Villages seems to show that their gains in other states will be made in the same direc- ton; while the republican strength will be in the agricultural districts. As New Jersey and Connecticut are dotted with manufac- turing cities, towns and villages, and as the Vote in these states is close, the democrats Will probably feel encouraged to make a sharp contest for both. In Matne the same condition of things will doubtless be de- veloped in the coming state election. The democrats will probably make gains in the Cities and the republicans in ihe country. ————~<--__ A correspondent of the Philadelphia Press Writes to that paper to say that the crew of the victorious Beaverwyck boat club “are Irish to « man,” explaining that they are of Irish parentage. He therefore claims that their victory should be creditet to “Ould ireland.” The Press very properly says that ‘ccording to that principle America would never get credit for anything, and that if not only our nataralized citizens, but their children and children’s children born within this country, were to be classed as forelgn- ers, there would really be no Americans, except those interesting natives belonging to the same race as Mr. Sitting Bull. ————-+e-- The Richmond Dispatch reminds the coun- try that Frank Blair in 1863 predicted that if Gen. Grant ever occupied the Presidential chair he would never surrender it alive, and 1s powerfully impressed with the notion that throngh a disagreement between the House and Senate in counting the electoral vote the country will be saddled witha life-long ruler. The Dispatch is unduly apprehensive, although it 1s quite possible that there might be @ serious difference of opinion be- tween the two houses in certain contingen- Cles in counting the electoral vote. The Cin- cinnat! Commercial puta the case in this way: ‘Under the law the objection of either house to the reception of the vote of a state is suf- ficient to throw out that vote without de- bate. The assumption is, that if Hayes is elected by asmall majority, carrying such states as North and South Carolina, Loulsi- ana, Mississippi, and Arkansas, or any of them, the House will object to counting the Votes of one or more of those states, or as many of them as will suffice to oast Hayes and elect Tilden. On the other hand, the democrats profess to be equaliy S@pprehen- sive that if Tilden should carry those states, Or some of them, and should have a small majority in the electoral college, the Senate Would object to the counting of some of the votes, and thus defeat Tildea and elect Hayes. Itis very easy to uoderstaad how the popular will could be set at naught simply on account of @ difference ja the Political complexion of the two houses. There is no disguising the fact that the Present method of counting the vote is fraught with danger to the country, or, as Senator Thurman puts it, the present sys- tem renders the country liable toa revolu- tion every four years. Congress should have remedied this matter at its last session by passing Senator Morton’s joint resolution changing the mode of counting the vote, or better still by passing his amendment to the Constitution providing for the election of she President and Vice President directly by the people. —\--re-—___ ‘It was generally supposed that any attempt On the part of the coal mining companies to reduce the wages of the miners would result in 8 strike. Happily, however, the miners Of the Lehigh region are sensible enouga to @ppreciate the situation and accept the re- duced wages. Heretofore they have been Working only from one-quarter to one half the time, but new, should the low price of coal increase the demand, they will have Steady work and will earn more in @ year than they have formerly. ee -__ Charles Francis Adams was yesterday nominated by acclamation by the demo- cratic convention of Massachusetts for the governorship of that state. He is the son of the late John Quincy Adams, a former Pres- ident of the United States, and was boro in Boston, Mass., August 1507. In 1348 he was nominated for the office of Vice President by the freesoilers who supported Mr. Van Buren for the Presidency. In 1350-56 he pub- Mshed the “Life and Works” of his grand- father, John Adams, in ten volumes. Hay- ing joined the republicans he was elected @ member of Congress in 1858, and again in 1860, and oecupied @ prominent position in ‘the deliberations of that body. In the spring ‘of 1861 Mr. Adams was appointed minister © England by Mr. Lincoln, the duties of whieh position were, during the civil war in the United States, very arduous and crit. ieal, and which he performed with much @bility and prudence, returning home in 1868. in 1871 ne was appointed one of the @rbitrators on the Alabama claims, since which he bas lived in comparative retire- ment at hishome in Massachusetts. He is @man of much dignity and purity of char- acter, but is frigid and formal, and has little popularity with the masses. He will un- doubtedly get the support of # good many of the Beacon street style of people in Massa. chusetts outside of party lines, but is likely to lose some of the Irish democratic votes on account of bis supposed want of s}.n- pathy with the Fenian prisoners when he was minister to England.
