+o naitacestar IR O68 * EV ENT. NG ST. AR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY September 6, 1976. CROSBY 8. NOYES..,,.... Editor. Beading Matter on Every Page Average meorm Daily Circulation ever 15,000,—being more than | pcan times that of any other daily paper in Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers in the city added tegether. Notice to Correspondents. Persons writing letters to this office for publica- ton or in regard to business will oblige us and best gerre their own purposes by addressing them simply to the“ Eprror oF THE S7aR” or the “PustsuER ov Tue STAR,” asthe case may be. When addressed Personally they are regarded a private letters, and in cases of absence inconvenient delays frequently occur from that cause. ‘The result of the opening election of the Beason in Vermont, affords an opportunity for the politicians to note the drift of public sentiment, and supplies some data for calca- Jations as to the national result in Movem- ber. In candidates and on issues the demo- crats In Vermont seem to have been in a po- sition to make as success{al a fight to main- tain, at least, their average vote, as they are likely to have in any of the northern st: Their candidate for governor (Bridgman) ‘Was concedediy @ strong man. He was a war democrat with an excellent record, and ‘Was generally popular by reason ot his up- Tightness and ability. On the other hand the democrats sought to make the campaign sharpiy aggressive on the republican candi- date, Governor Fairbanks, by accusing him Of being a “tax dodger,” and of inducing re- gious aud educatioual insitcations to in- vest their fands in the securities of railroads in which he was interested, bat which have turned out to be of very liitle value. The idea that the hard times are due to the re- publican party was also industriously pushed @mongst the working men. On the other band, it is estimated that about reven-eighths of the tiberal repubil- cans of Vermont, who in 1572 voted for Mr. Greeley, sre back in the republican ranks, As fully this proportion of the liberals throughout the country will probably be found acting with their old republican asso- clates this year, an estimate can be made Bow with some reliabiilty of the bearing of this vote in other states. There can be no doubt that the result in Vermont, showing republican majority of thirty thousand in @state where the tetal vote is only about sixty thousand, will give a decided im- petus to the republican canvass elsewhere. In Maine, where # desperate fight ts golng On, the effect wili be of no littie service to the republicans, who have disa‘fections in their own ranks in some of the Congressional districts, and who have also to meet an ex- ceedingly sharp and well-managed cam- paigu by tuelr hungry adversaries. The fact that in Maine, in 1875, the repuoitean major- ity was reduced to 3,872, against 113% to 1874, and 17,216 in 1572, bas given the demo- crats vo little courage. The republicans, bowever, expect to make large gains in the country towns on their last year’s majority, sufficient to over bala ay prssible gains of the democrats in the cities, and at the same tocarry the state ticket by @ sat- isfactory majority. ————-ore-—__ The New York Eveniny Post also thinks Gov. Seymour's singular statement, commented upon in yestercay’s STAR, iu regard to the Inability of @ democratic Presidest and a democratic House to pass or repeal laws While the Senate is repu' “an, & confession Of the rafitness of his party to be trasted With the administration of the government. You suspect aud distrust us,” he says to the voters. “I do not say that there is not ground to do s0, but don’t be afraid. You can disarm us for mischief by dividing power with the republicans.” The Post 1s reluctant to believe that Mr. Seymour is the author of 80 weak a document. — ow, Bors: iF rou WANT A NEW FALL SUIT, BEAD THIs To YOUR MOTHEB. ‘The Most ‘Tremeatous Btock Ct Clothing For Boys end Youths Ever Been Ia Any One Store, Are How Stacked Up On Gur Counters. This it estimates will be a Saving of fully #30,000,000 annually to con- sumers. The importance of a saving of $1.50 Per ton tn coal to the railroads may be Judged from the fact that the New York Central fuel bill amounts to $2,200,000 a year, and thatof the Erie to $1,100,000. This re. duction should save about £700,000 per an- Bum to the former, and $350,000 to the latter, while ali other roads in the middie and east. mm states will be benefitted in a similar Proportion. The reduction will also mate- Fially diminish the expense of steam navi- gation, manufactories, and all other large establishments which use large quantities of coal. _ oro The republicans in Vermont count confi- dently on 27.000 majority to. = . If they get 23,000 or 24,000, they ought to be thankful—all bar kno will be basis for brag, iudeed. —t id Republican. The republicans in Vermont seem to have the requisite basis for brag. ———_+02—___ The democrats, of course, did not expect to carry Vermont, bat they had made a pretty vigorous campaign to the end of reducing the republican majority for political effect, and seem to have counted quite contidently upon making that gain. The Vermont cor- respondent of the Boston Post (democratic,) ‘Writing from Montpelier on the eve ofthe election says “the State Democratic com- mittee have the fullest confidence that tue republican majority will be greatly reduce 1 the chairman claimigg #reduction, at least: of twenty per cent. from the majority of 1574, when the republicans had over 20.000." A republican victory of someth ing like thirty thousand must prove a preity damp blanket upon these expectations, and the Post, with cbaracteristic philosophy under defeat, will Probably display its democratic rooster up- side down again, as it has had occasion to do pretty steadily for the last sixteen years. ae “anblushing liar,” “miserable dog,” “@ cruel, conscienceless coward,’ “geoundrel,” and @ “villain,” are the pet names given to General Batler by the Rich- mond Dispaich. Probably all this don’t burt the feelings of the general much after ail. ———_ + 200+ The democrats of Soutn Carclina have a novel way of securing a hearing frem repub- Mean stumps.
