The Heratd is of the opinion that house holders will lose nothing by not hastening to lay in their supplies, as it is believed the competition among the companies must eventuate in still lower Prices. Many large dealers in New York are contracting for coal in November at Prices far below the figures whicn have pre- vailed for years past, and the Reading Ratl- Toad agency offers to sell to large consumers @t 84 per tov. It is evident that unlesssome ew combination is entered into, which is deemed unlikely, consumers will get their coal this winter at much cheaper rates than formerly. —__—_—_-.ee--+___ It is to be hoped the Centennial authori- tes will continue toadmit the public at half price op Saturdays. Last Saturday the pay- ing attendance was 95,873—more than double the number of visitors oa ordinary days. Kil- patrick to Governor Hayes relative to the campaign in Indiana, the democrats are making the most of the biunder, and at one Of their meetings the other day displayed an Old sbirt daubed with red and filled with bullet boles as a burlesque on the “bloody sbirt.” The symbol is an unhappy one, and is pot likely to come inte geaeral use by the democrats during the campaign. It is a@ltogetner too painfully suggestive to be amusing. A correspocdent of the New York World, Writing from Batreuth just before the per- formance of Wagner's trilogy, mentions as the most important Innovation tu the par- formar ce the location of the grand orchestra of one hundred and twenty pieces, witch ‘Was shut out from the view of the audience, and thinks this azrangement Is not entirely Original with Wagner, Goethe in his“ Wil- beim Meister” having alluded to the advan- tage which would result if the instrumental Perfermers could be removed fron signt, But it remained for Wagner to suggest a method by which the orchestra could be ren- dered invisible without impatring the acous- tical effect. The orchestra at Saireuth was lowered seventeen feet below its former po sition, while @ thin wall sbut off the sightof it, and at the same time served as a reflector Of the sound. The effect, the correspoddent adds, was wonderfal. A seere of unusual interest was witnessed at the Western Union telegraph office in Omaha the other day, when a little boy six years of se, supposed to be the lost Charley Ross, and who had been found Iiving with colored people, was brought up to talk with Mr. Ross, by telegraph, in Philatelphia, The circumstances strongly favored tha sup- position that the boy was the long-lost Char- Jey, and so satisfied was a prominet official Of the fact that he startled the distressed father io Philadelphia with the annonnce- ment, “Your boy is here!” Aimost imme. diately @ message was received from Mr. Ross asking, “What is your name?” To this the little fellow replied “Zildie Ross.” He was then asked if he had any brothers and sisters, and answered that he had two broth- ers, but po sisters, and that his brothers: names were Henry and Gus. The descrip- tion of Mr. Ross’ family was partly correct, and he then asked the operators to compare the photograph of Charle 7 when he was three years old with bis present appearance. This they did, and returned an answer that the resemblance was remarkable. The answer to the next question— What is thecolor of his eyes?”—seems to have satisfied Mr. Ross that the boy was not his child. The answer to this query was “dark bluish gray.” This color, Mr. Ross telegraphed. did not corres- pond with the color of Chariey’s eyes, which Were light basel. All of his children (six in mumber) had the same colored eyes, and it ‘was noted that the older they grew the dark- @r their eyes became, so that Charl>y’s eyes at present should be of a dark hazel color. It seems @ little singuiar that Mr. Rosa should have dropped the investigation ona mere hypothesis in regard to the color of his eyes. It would not necessarily follow be cause the rest of his children’s eyes grew dark hazel im color that the lost child's should beof thatcolor. He has had a long and bitter experience, however, and was doubtless fally convinced that the Omaha ‘wait was not his boy for whom he has been searching for three long years. The other day a Brook- lyn clergyman named Page, who evidently Delongs to the church militant, was visiting ® poor parishioner, when @ swaggering young Towdy jostied him. The rudeness was passed by unnoticed, but it was soon repeated with the addition of grossly offensive ianguage. The clerical gentleman thereapon pushed him one side when the rascal struck him on the shoulder and endeavored to draw @ pistol. Mr. Page at once grappled with him and gave him seyeral blows. Thinking the Towdy not been sufficiently punished he seized him and threw him over his shoulder. ‘The result was that the curbstone came in violent contact with the rowdy’s forenead cutting & severe gash from which the blood spurted in @ stream.
