He was one of the war co ors of the Empire state, serving two t rns, and during his ad- Ministration sent to the t 223,000 troops. In 1868 he was elected to tue United States Senate, and after the retirement of Secretary Fessender was offered the Treasury port- folio, which be declined. He held the chair- manstip of the national executive commit- tee of the republican party for several years, He is about sixty ive years of age, is Wealtby, and has an unsullied reputation. The demccracy at their convention next ‘week must bring out their best man if they Would defeat him. Mach interest is naturally felt in the result in New York. In 1372 the state gave Grant 52.45) majority over Gree- ley, while Gen. Dix’s m2jority wasa little More. In 1573, at the election for state offi- cers, (excepting governor) the democrats carried their ticket by 9493 majority. In 1874 Tilden beat Dix by 50,317 majority. In 1815 the democrats again carried the state by 13,55 majority. Toese figures show how ‘Variabie the state is, and indicate a close contest this year. ——_—__-e. R. Shepherd, ‘Washington, D.C.,and that the Governor, after looking at the name for @ moment, in- dignantly sent word by his messeager “that be did not want his acquaintance, and Wanted nothing todo with public plunder- ers.” That this is a deliberate lie, manufac- tured out of the whole cloth, will be under- ‘Stood when it is known, as is the fact, that Mr. Shepherd bas not been twenty miles distant from Washington in the last six months. But was it necessary to lug a Presidential candidate into the imaginary scene, and present him in the character of & boor, in order that a little mad might be thrown upon Mr. Shepherd by some Of his enemies: — Governor Canales, of Tamaulipas, Mexico, ig. model Mexican reyolationist. He is re- ported as committing great outrages, press- Ing forced loans, issuing worthless paper money, and compelling people toeell their Property tohis private agents. He boldly asserts that his only purpose in rebelling was toraise money. Tne tine will proba- bly come when an outraged psopie will raise him at the end o! Stout hempen rope. General Kilpatrick, so sounetimas *s Known as « Killeavalry,” writes as he was accustomed to fight—rashly—jadgiog from ihe purioined letter which he recently wrote to Governor Hayes. It is a question whetuer his usefal- ness as @ paid stump orator, wuic never amounted to much, will not be still farther impaired by the letter in question. Senator Hamlin corroborates, except in one particular, the veteran journalist ani politician, Thurlow Wee, in his statemeut ‘tbat in 1550, Alex. H. Stephens, Rob’t Toombs and Thomas L. Ciingman, had a stormy in- terview with President Taylor. The state. Tent has been earnestly deaied by Messrs. Stephens and Toombs. According to Mc. ‘Weed, the object of tne interview was to in- duce General Taylor, a southera man and @ Blaveholder, to veto the bili permitting Cal- Mornia to enter the union as a free state. This he would not do, and Mr. Weed charges that Stephens and Toombs indulgei in ahreats of disunion, which were indignantly yesented by General Taylor. Mr. Hanlin writes to Mr. Weed to say tha’ he visited General Taylor a moment after Stephens ‘and Toombs left nis office. As they passed out they both seemed grea‘ly exelted. Mr. Hiamlin passed into the President's room @nd found him likewise mach disturbed. In fact, to use Mr. Hamlin’s owa worts, “he @ppeared like an enraged lion in his cage.” He walked across the room several times, @nd then addressing Mr. Hamlia inquired ‘what he was doing with the “O-matbas bill.” Mr. Hamlin replied that, believing it wroag, he was trying to defeat it. The President's rejoinder was decidei. “Stand frm,” he replied; “don’t yteid, it means disunion, and 1 am pained to learn that we have disaaion men to contend with; disanion is treason;” and, with an expletive, he said “that if tht ‘attempted to carry out their schemes while he was President they sbouid be dealt with by law as they deserved and execated. Once or twice in the conversation he amrmed that he would not be coerced by any man or men from the strict line of his duty, as he under- Stood it, and that the union must be pre- served at ali hazards.” It would appear from this _—— gallant old soldier Presi- dent ® good deal of Jacksouian grit bout Dum. a pe A.
