Establisbed when we were comparatively & “feeble folk,” her past career has been sac- cessful and nonorable. Apparently wrecked by the fortunes of war she has riseu from her ruin to stand like a@ beacon amid the sur- rounding desolation. Her halls have been Billed by a larger number of st ats than ever before, aud she bas already attained a most gratifying degree of prosperity, owing to the almost unp@railleied devotion of the Baptists, who amid the ruin of tnetr for- tunes resolved to raise an endowment of | $100,000 and @ few years later a farther en- dowment of $300,000 as @ thank offering to Ged for religious freedom. This last has not been accomplished, and the report urges that churches and individuals aid the “Dollar Roll,” set on foot for this purpose. The Belie Haven institute and the instituteat Warren. ton sre mentionea as deserving support. The necessity of intermediate schools is urged. The educational board bas sustained Ubirty-fve young men at the Richmond Col. lege at @ cost of #85 per student. A HUMILIATING FACT. The secretary of the education board re- ports the humiliating fact that more than 400 of the churches of the general asscclation bave contributed nothing to the board dur- Ing the past year, and 42 of these delinquents are in tnis (Potomac) association. The claims of the Southern Baptist Asso- ciation are alluded to, and the report at some length urges the importance of educa- tonal interests. . J. L.. Carroll followed in an address, ‘ich he urged it as the duty of every ‘st to aid the board in the work, and ed that in Virginia the church has lost much by not having paid more atteation to Mr dT. El cor ndin tary r. J. T. Ellyson, corresponding secre! of the board of education, addressed the as- sociation, oe oe the ministers should be more thoroughly prepared for the work. Rey. Dr. Jeter and Mr. H. K. Ellyson also spoke on the subject. Rev, W. 8. Penick, of Alexandria, offered @ resolution, that the moderator appolat a Tepresentative in each church to present the claims of the » and that Rey. I. B. Lake take this subject uncer his especial charge. Rev. Mr. Lame said the apparent failure of the collections was owing to the fact that the — were made = to Jane 15th last, when the churches usuaily make their col- lectiovs late in summer or in the fall. In the course of his remarks he denied the statement that he bad heard when a boy that THE BAPTISTS OF VIRGINIA AK& AN iGNO- RANT SET, and stated that no sect had been as liberal as they, for they had respoaded nobly to every call made upon them. Taw repori was went over. 3 Brother Dulin reported that Upperville be the place for the next meeting, Rev. Dr. Cuthbert to deliver the sermon, Kev. Samuel Barber, alternate; adopted. Rey. Mr. Penick submitted the report on STATE OF VIRGINIA MISSIONS. In reference to taat portion of tbe territory Within the bounds of the association he States that there have been five missiouaries employed steadily, and two part of the time. The report urges that Leesburg, Faiis Church, Front Royal and other points should be oceupted. Mr. H. K. Ellyson, secretary of the state board of missions, s@id that Lhe board was organized to send missiouaries to destitute Farts of the state of Virginia, and last year the 41 missionaries received 2,243 converts, and in the last five years the aumber of con- verts was 10,29, He had been connecied with the board 2% years, during which t me 241 churches had been built aod 27,940 gd had been received into the church. ‘his was a blessed work, but mucu more re- mained to be done. He was one of those who believed that | Damed. VIRGINIA WAS NOW IN HER INFANCY, snd would be one of the foremust states in the Union. He noted that, with 45,000 square miles, she had but 1,225.00 people, witle England, but little larger in territory, has 22.700, People, aod there was but iittie doubt but that she could support a popula- Uon equally as large. Situated as she rt ph.caily, with the natural advantages ebe has, there was bo reasoa but that io a few years she could successfully contend With any of the great states of ihe Union. With facts 1d view, every Virginia christi#a can see the responsibilities resting upon them. As Baptists, including the col- ored members, they numbered in tua@t state 173,000, and they should aid the board to ant a church neighdcrhood. If yy did their duty for Jesus. eve the si te is people gospel, and he asked how they could do it unless they have the means to send out mi: sionaries. He noted that the statistics showed tnat the larger the number of missionaries sept out the larger the number of converts. If the churches were fully awake to their responsi- bility they will every year increase their contributions. At the annual meeting in July 21 missionaries were appointed for the whole year, apd i7 until the meeting of the respective associations. In to the contributions there is a good deal of encour- agement, and he noted the fact that the con- tributions given the ten years since the war ee Set Sonne = = b prosperous years prior 6 PY ney gave in prosperity but give more poverty. He compiimen tors on the success of their Jabors in the past @s to financial matters—the board owed its very existence to them. They needed the co operation of the membersiip, and they bad received It. As to page aed being too poor to give, he noted the fact that of the $25,000 paid to the state board, seven-tenths was trom poor neighborboods, @ud he would say for the Virginia en that be never found one outside of the poorhouse who would not give something. He had knowo boys lo sell subscription books to give to the cause, and he noted that @ lady too poor to give anything else, set apart a hen aud from ber sold twenty chickens at tuirty cents — and the proceeds were paid to the of board.
