H Sir: Ido rot know the merits of the con- | | troversy between General Hovey ai Prin- cipal =e a, nor do I propose to engage in it; but I desire to say that there is tbat in | the experience of Gen’i Hovey which would | seem to ft bim for a school trustee, aad, probably, brocght about his appointment as Gen’ "l Hovey is a graduate of Dartmouth College, aud, like many other Dartmouth | men, supported himself when in college by | keaching: Afler he graduated he was prin. —— the high school and academy at Fra- gbam. Mass., and then became principal Of a boys school at Peoria, lil. In Illinois be was one of the ieading men in the move- ment that organized the present system of free echoo!s under state authority, sup) ed by taxation. He was the the ‘lllinols Teacher.” th of the Illinois State Teachers’ Association, of which body he was one of the founders. H intendent of schools and bigh sehool for Peoria, an: the Norma! University of Tilinois was es tablished, be was put at the head of It. And there be con tint until the war broke eut, when be entered the field as colonel of the 33d Ilinois, mainly composed of and offi cered == teachers, scholars and graduates. In such @ record the appoiuting power might find exceileut excuse for making him noo] trustee. August 8, 1576. R.D. M. Having no disposition to underrate Mr. Hovey; or do him any injustice, we very readily give place to the above. At thesame time, and without questioning the flattering record given of his career as an educator and military man, we may be permitted to say that, whether from impaired digestion, disordered liver, or the reminiscences of military rale he is now @ sour, dogmatic, despotic person, who seems to look upon the teachers as mendicants and hire- lings to be disp'aced without cause or notice at the will of their superiors, the trustees. We believe Mr. Hovey to be a man of integ- rity, and do not class him with the persons who have sought a place on the school board tor selfish or unworthy parposes, but at the ame time we think his faults of temper, bitterness, dogmatism, want of sympathy With teachers, tyrannical ideas of military elscipline in school matters, and inordinate felf-conceit render him one of the most unfit men for a place on the board that could well be found. Tne manner in which be bas conducted the prosecution, or rather the persecution against one of our oldest f&ud best teachers, towards whom he has had @ pique, illustrates this fact. The fact that be is @ capable, well-trained lawyer also adds to bis disqualifications for the position of school trustee, as, combined with his intense bitterness and self-conceit, it causes bim to enter into @ raid upon & school teacher with all the beat, animus, and seal in hunting up evi- cence, of @ legal practitioner bent upon Winning @ cause. And, however he may have distinguished himseif in the past as an educator, we submit that he does not now show evidence of being sufficiently weil posted even in that point of view to make him & proper person to have control over our public schools interests. The following from ‘the Capital of Sunday last shows that we are Bot alone in this view: our schools and ition is Mr. ——- We do not kuow any of Mr. Ho: from bis own handwiting, which "s.
