One bright spring afternoon the Wartem- berg royal post coach drew up before an oul- of the-way little railway station some five hours journey from Hellbron to take aboard our party. It was @ curious old vehicle, cumbrous, ponderous, aud gorgeous enough to bave belonged to the middie ages. Tae exterior like a buge beetle was colored black and yellow and every available space em- blazoned with the Wurtemberg coat of arms. The driver, bostier, and postilion in corres- pondingly gorgeous livery bustied over the ‘paratory <letails of the start with so much portance that @ strange: bave sup; that we were aboul to setout Indeed the sioring = ine baggage looked decidediy like tt. @ bi box, bandbox, bag and bund ‘T might easily gh they were never more to be called into requisition. coupe, interior and seats up with the driver are the three accommodations a‘ford- ed by the coaches. The coupe is decidediy preferable, for being situated directly behind the driver's seat you enjoy the extended view without having the brisk mountain air convert your attire Into flapping sails, The pleasure of a coupe ride thongh 1s materially diminished by that terrible undertaking of getting in and out. You have to moupi & Steep ladder of couree. but all this would be well epongh if the driver and posttiton did reist in treating you like baggage, Z ope on the vp round to pull you up and the other on the greand to pash you up or catch you should y.1 fail. Taere was @ prolonged Stare when W. made the request to be allowed ty ascend unassis: awkward silence while we scran SOO as 8a) WE WERE INTERVIEWED. The Nurtemberg peasantry are remark- ably loquacious on all occasions, and as our party seemed to excite some littie curiosity among the villagers standing around, an old woman was sent to investigate. Sheclimbed halt way up the ladder, and in her strange échwabish dialect began by asking the pre lninary questions as to where we had come from, where we were going, &c. Then sne sought the desired information—*But you are not Germans, are you” No, we are Americans.” “Ah, 80, Americans’”—and the coupe door banged to with a most conclu- sive si9m as the old woman hobbled off to spread this bit of gossip. Individuals from ““way across the sea” did not drop down in that little corner of the world every day, so there 1s no Knowing what cross-examination it might have been ours to undergo had not the horn sounded at that moment aud the great lumbering vehicle began to move out of the village on to the high read. Up bili and down dale we journeyed the whole after- noon, over mile after mile of smooth white roadway, across which the bordering fruit tees threw such a pleasant chequer- ed shade. At one time on tue top of @ high elevation we would gaze back upon the road through the valley by whica we had come, and @ few minutes after, in the jowlands again, would look up the serpeatine Windings of the path we must ascend. The sunny slopes of Lhe hills were vine-ciad, and on them, as well as through the fields, were groups of busy workers. They were not deal aud Mullers exactly, those hard-worked, square-bailt women who gazed after our couch, but their peasant dress gave them @ picturesque appearance, and in some places where we ed we heard them slugisg such happy, rollicking peasant glees. On the top of a bill where we pansed to rest, a comical little urchin, who, perched on a fence-rail, Was dramming his heels and singing for amusement, gave us quite @ mu- sical treat. You never would have sapposed from bis appearance that he were capabie of such @ thing, but, with that unabashed man ner whieh characterizes German peasantry, he did sot allow our presence to iaterrupi his 8 At the end of every , an exquisit es cleur and distinet fn ail tue ra 5 on we bigh notes as an Al. The tired horses revived enough to rattle up the village street with quiteashow of spirit. We passed under a@ great stone arcli- way into @ courtyard, and lnere the jouraey ended. A quite large though juvenile crowd Stood gaping at us. The busy whisper of “Tis they; ‘tie they,” was circulating among them; s0 we were linmediately in- formed of the fact that not only were our own kind friends, but the whole village, an- Liclpating our arrival. The little town of K. which we visited isa true type of A WURTEMBERG VILLAGE. The main street runs with tolerable regu- larity the entire length of the town from mountain to mountain, but the side streets and lanes are mixed up with the most into!- erable irregularity. It almost seemed like being transferred @ few centuries into the past, such @ quaint, old fashioned aspect did everything wear. If they ever do dulld any- thing new there they endeavor to make it Jook as much like the old houses as possible, model jt after the accepted architecture of the village and paint it a dingy faded yel- low. The beams all appear ou the outside of houses and the projecting gable roofs en- lrely shelter the narrow side walk beneath. The front room on the ground floor of nearly every house is a little store; very seldom are goods displayed in the window, but asmaii square biack lettered sign on one side of the front door informs the public that such and such @ trade is carried on there. At almost every other house hangs out a tavern sigan rd, Such weather stained old affairs tat you can hardly distinguish the ferocious animals painted on them or the words *‘Tav- ern to the Black Bear,” &c. The dyeing es- tablishments where the homespun woolens are colored have racks fixed from “ne to another of the attic windows. On then, they hang out yaraiter yard of material toury, so that it dangles but a foot or twoabove the beads of the pedestrians on the street below. At one end of the vilisge rans @ bright little river, Uy far the most autmated thing in the whole place. Onits banks are a mill and two or three tanneries; many a pleasant hour did we spendon the bridge watching the reat wooden wheel paddie the water and Nstening to the rushing noise of the dam which almost extinguished the hum of busy fe at the tanneries. THE INTERIORS OF THE HOUSES are cosy and homelike, with everything on on such a diminutive scale that they almost appear like doll houses. The rooms are small, Whe aus are alaye are al) Ly German history, room of every house enter you will inevitably find a “Emperor Wlibelm’s Triumphal Berlin,” or. “The Sutrender at Sedan. pein Bae the — ae occupied by @u antique, legged en' siter the style of those which fozart and aes stra Beethov SESE a i i | Botry into bung on a nejp.">oring fence) we saw the Annonocement th.*t @2 American meloty was to be performat. They rendered it with such exqui- site tenderness and feeling that {t was almost Impossible to think that faraway Suwanee river snch a matter of indifference to the performers. These village people work with the most ant- mal drudgery for thongh they take recreation aud amusement In the afternoon, they are up before a chanticieer stirs a feather tn the morning. Knowing no happy medium tn this respect they enter work excessively bard or leave the matter alone altogether. It did seem to us that half the mate popula- tion pursued this latter course, were perfect Bobemians in fact. The whoie day we would bear bursts of iaughter from the tavern in the neighborhood, and from one «directly op- ite, where we could lean ont of our win- low and touch the sign-board, the voice of be narrator SS for the benefit of the company was dis' y audible. A ter- rifle round of applause would ead each story, and then the Voice of @ new narrator be heard in something to outdo the last. Yet these people beyond the worthless way they were spending their lives did the villagers noespecial hatm. We never saw a case of intoxication or even of loud or rude behavior, bot then they never touch anything stronger than wine from the neighboring vineyards and Bavarian beer. ON SUNDAY MORNING the peasantry for miles around came in to attend church service. Thesmall! edifice was so crowded that half the congregation had to and. They were mostly workers from the vineyards—a thin, sunburnt, wiry, m people. who even on level ground ‘never sige their mountainons gait and bear We enjoyed thesimple Lutheran serv: the few arpest words which the clergyman spoke, because they were so hearty, appro- priate and barmonious with the whole of the worship. Coming ont of church, every body began shaking hands with his neigi- bor, and wishing him a good appetite for his dinner. With tbe words of the last nyran still ringing In our ears, this seemed a littie Strange at first, but we entered Into it with the rest, and went home with well-wishes | enough to bless every mouthfal we swal lowed. In the afternoon we sat in the gardeo by the river and listened to te reading aloud of one of Marlett’s German tales. Oa the bridge and opposite bank, visibie from where we sat, was one coustant stream of people, mostly peasants with their families, making Sanday afternoon excursions from village to village. The bappy record of our afternoon rambies is never to be forgotten. There was not a nook or corner in the village left unexplored, not even when !t came tosqueezing trough a small attic window to get out on a rooftop where there was astork’s nest. The villager: regard this bird @ messenger of good for- tune and think & house forever biest over whose chimney & stork butids its great clam- sy nests. Wemounted the dusty stairs to the belfry of the old church tower, threw open the great wooden shutters avd enjoyed an extended view over the entire village. Up in the eaves @ lot of swallows were flittering about making that strangely fascinating sound with their wings through the air which Germans love to hear. Up and dowa the mountains from town to town, through tbe forests in search of the German forget me nots and the meadow land Dy the river were excursions made every day. On tne road one’day we met A PEASANT WEDDING PARTY. There were four or ive wagons full of peo- ple, all singing and seeming in the gayest of spirits. Our little companions screamed out hearty congratulations to the bride and groom, and & lot of nosegays were thrown to | us. The wagons were Wreathed in greens and flowers, the horses ornamented with gay Streamers. The peasant giris wore sach end- 1es8 yards of bright ribbon dependiug fro their coqnettish little caps tuat it quite a noisy flapping in the rapid driv nis was tbe only ample feature ta the toil for their skirts barely covered suoes. Ab endless amount of linen is, tudeed, re- quired in places like this village, where they WASH ONLY ONCE IN SIX MONTHS, It is not, to be sure, very agreeable to have the miseries of washing day dawn withevery Monday morning, bat far worse is it to get all the misery 1n a lump twice in @ year, to have the accumulated triais of not less than twenty-six Monday mornings come ali at once. This wholesale washing siege bap- pened to befall the family we were visiting during our stay. Six great mascaline-look- ing peasant women arrived late oye night and started to work at it, for théy work night and day. The house servant was aroused to make them strong coffee, aud she hardly did anything else while they were there. In all our experience of cotfee drink- ing we had scen nothing like this. for tne mousic of the coffee mil! kept incessant tune to their scrubbing. We tried to penetrate the laundry regions, but were driven out by an alinosphere as clouded with the stormy. voices of the old women as with the hou, hiinding steam. A DUBUQUER AT THE FALLS.—The Du- bugue (lowa) Times prints a letter from a cilizen of that town, pow at Niagara Falis, in which the writer gives this bit of graphic ceseription: “The falls looks to me like a river standing on end and trying to walk off onetilts, Tbe only thing I can compare Ni- agara to is Julian avenue, and that covered with sleet and ice, and about thirty boys and girls riding down on handsieds of a moon- light night at lightning gait, and fetcniag “up at the Lorimier House ali pelimeil, with a few legsand arms broken after ruaning over tbree or four horses and carriages.
