A lady of racic in Paris nas, it is said, Started @ school for the purpose of teaching young ladies in society how to do their owa Gresemaking iu correct, and even scientific principles. A skillful modiste is engaged to give two lessons per week of one hour each to the class, who practice at home between times, and many of them show a genius for the work, which will shortly make them ex- pert. Why cannot several such schools be established for the benefit of fashionable young ladies in this country? It would be More rapid, avd to many of them more in- teresting work than drawing, or Painting, or wood carving, or lace makiog. Why can- not we have scuools of dressmaking as well as schools of cookery? One is as useful as the other, while the ey saved in families would be @ consideration. American giris need something to do; that is conceded, and bow many make poor singers and dreadful readers, And unappreciated writers who would make excellent dressmakers. Be- sides, there is uo peed to inform the world of their mission. They can put their taste and skill to real practical use, and no one be the wiser. They can save the ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty doliars they pay for hay- ing a dress made, aud get a second one, or pulthe money in the bank for a wedding portion. American girls are pretty, but as a rule they ave the most utterly useless of human belbgs. They toll uot, neither do they spin, id Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed ike one of these. It may well bea serious question to any man whether he can afford io Iarry one of them. They can neither help bim vor themselves; they expect all the good things of tuis world to fall into thelr caps, witbout even reaching out their hands for ii. A fashionable school of dressmaking would be a very good thing; that is, a scheme U.at was made fashionable by the auspices under Which {t was opened. Une of the traest charities and pbilanthropies would be such & school superintended by some lady in high position, who Would attract young women to 1t and Lake a8 much troubié for it as for a “rosebud” dinner party.
