After the medals were awarded President Weiling addressed the class of "76, as follows: Gentlemen of the Graduating Class: —“To everything tuere is a season,” as the wise man has toid us, “and a time to every pur- pose under the Heaven.” To you and to us the time of parting bas come, For a mo- ment we stand together to-night at the farth- est point of the narrow isthmus which con- nects the present with the past, and together we cast our wistful eyes over the boundless ocean of that near future whose surges are already leaving your fest, and the noise of whose breakers is siready filling your ears. The vicissitude of life, with its joy and its Sorrow, bas brought you to that critical epoch of transition at which two seas meet and stroggie for the mastery, as the tides of memory rush in to buffet the tides of hope which are swelling in your souls. Your y, and yet the pendulum that marks the flitting seconds is seen to swing alternately ‘betwixt a smile anda tear;” as the hand on tue dial points back- ward to the hour that nas struck, and for- | ward to the hour which is just about to | sound in your hearing—ringing out th: old and ringing in the new. It is most fitting that you should pause for ® moment on the threshold of the career that les before you, and receive the last saluta- tion of your Alma Mater. Day by day, through four long years of homage and of service, you have entered her sanctuary and laid your gifts upon her altars. From this time forth we treat you no longer as acolytes in the tempie of learning, and as we lay our bands upon your heads for the last time we do 80 notonly ia token of our parting bene- diction, but also in earnest and pledge of your dedication to the exalted priesthood of the Christian scholar. We send you forth as soldiers, equipped in the panoply of our schools for the warfare of life. Not without preparation, and not without the animating voice of abigh heraldry, do you enter the struggle to which you are sammoned, and for which you have already girded your loins. “In our halis is hung, . Armory of the invincible knights of old.” You have the saints and sages of all his- | tory for your file-leaders, and, like them, when your warfare shall have been accom: plished, you may hang up your shields in memory of your triumphs, if, like taem, you | Shall learn to Keep your swords withoutrust aud your souls without spot. We send you forth as feet runners ih the torch race of modern culture, and as you catch from yonr predecessors the lamp of learning or the amp of life, we bid you to feed its sacred flame with the beaten oil of the sanctuary, and ever to remember that “Heaven doth with us, as we with torches do— light them for ourselves.” We send you forth as athletes called to en- gage in nobler games and more generous rivalries than any to which old Greece fn- vited her stalwart youth, aad by which she Was wout to count the years of her calendar. Let no dust settie on your chariot wheels. Be eager and earnest tn the race of life, ever remembering, as Bacon phrases it, that God only and the angels are permitted to og spectators in this busy world of ours—re- membering, too, as @ greater than Bacoo has admonished us, that “if aman strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfully.” If I exhort you thus to struggle for the victor’s crown and the victor’s palm, it is uot simply that you may. bind the laurel and the parsley aronnd ‘your, brows, as a decoration which shall lift you above the bumbler of your fellow-men. In the midst of all the bigh aspirations which you may rightfully cheris:, I pray you not to for- get taat the scholarship to which you have attained is @ ministry, aod not a perquisite. Even the great Teacher of Galilee mingled With His disciples ‘tas one that serveth,’ t men are set in .ne galaxy of history rain their influence down, ahd remind us that we, too, “may make our lives sublime,” it behooves us ever to remember that our lives can never be made so truly sublime as when they are patterned after the meek, patient, humble and tranquil spirit of Him who was at once the Son of man and the Son of God.
