Conventions ven! a Washington to Just at this time a brief sketch of our po- itieal bistory as regards Presidential nomi- nations will be iuteresting. George Wash- ington, the first President of the republic, was elected almost unanimously by Con- gress. fie was re-elected, and during bis ad- ministration the federal and dent, over Charles C. Pinckney and King. James Madison was nominated by a pom ay oe caucus in January, 1808, and ae tbya majority. RE-ELECTION OF MADISON. He was revominated in the same manner in 1812. In September of the same year a convention iting éleven states was beld in New York, which nominated De Witt Clinton. James Madison was re elected. in 1815 James Monroe was nominated by a@ Congressional caucus. The federalists named Rufus King. Mr. Mouroe was elected, and in 1820 be was re elected without oppo- sition. In 124 the Congressioual caacas system was opposed bg Mtarge portion of the republican part Jat 66 members re- sponded to the call, and these nominated ytitiam H. Crawiord for the Presidency. Jackson, Clay, and Adams were also noini baied by various states, and there was no choice by the people. THE FIRST NATIONAL CONVENTION. In 1830 the first political national conven- tion in this country was held in Puiladel- pale. It was called the United States Anti- asouic Convention, The same convention met in Baltimore in 1331, and nominated William Wirt, of Maryland, for President. In May, 1532, Democratic National Con- Yention was held in Baltimore, and Martin Van Buren, of New York, was selectei as candidate for Vice President. That ticket was elected. The National Republican Cona- vention assembled in Baltimore December 12, 1831, and Heary Clay, of Kentucky, was unauimously nominated for President, and Jobn Sargeant, of Pennsylvania, for Vice President. In May, 1535, a Democratic Na- onal convention was held in Baltimore, and @t this convention the two-third rule was adopicd. Martin Van Baren was unani- mously pominated for President, and Rich- ard M. Johnson, of Kentucky, was chosen for Vice. President, recetving 173 votes to ST votes for William C. Rives, of Virginia. No pas tht ted by this convention. . Willigm H. ison, of Ohio, was the opposition candidate to the democracy in 16. He was nominated by @siate conven- ton in Pennsylvania, and several other bodies. In 1839 & Whig National Convention Was held tn Harrisburg, Pa., and Gen. Wil- liam H. Harrison was nominated for Presi- dent. John Tyler, of Virginia, was selectet as Vice President. In mder, 1839, a convention of Abolitionisis was’ heid’ at Warsaw, New York. James G. Birney, of dvew Yerk,was nominated for Presideat, and Francis J. Lemoyne, of Pa., for Vice Presi- ent. On the 2th of the same month the democratic national convention met in thesamecity. James K. Polk, of Tennessee, was nominated for Pre- Sident, and Silas Wright, of New York, for Vice President. Mr. Wrigat immediately declined, and Hon. G. M. Dallas.of Peansy!- Vania, Was selected tofll bis place. THE LIBERTY PARTY. The national convention of the libarty party met in Buffalo, N. Y., on the 30th of August, le4i. James G. Birney, of Michi- gan, was unanimously nominated for Presi- eet, and Thomas Morris, of Onto, for Vice President. Tue whig national convention of 1513 was held in Paliadeiphia, resulted in the nomiuation of General Zachary Taylor for President, aud Miliard Fillmore for Vice President, THE TWO-THIRDS RULE. On the of May, 1815, the Democratic National Convention assembied at Balti- more. The two-third rule was siopted, and Gen. Lewis Cass selected as the candidate for the Presidency on the fourta ballot. Gen. Wm. O. Butler was selected for the Vice Presidency. The Free Democratic Conven- tion assembled on the 224 of June, 1348, at Utica, N. Y., and placed in nomination Mar- n for President and Henry Dodge for Vice President. The latter subse- quently declined. On the 9th of Juae of the same year a similar convention was heid in Buffalo, which pominated Martin Van Bua- ren for President and Charles Francis Adams for Vice President. THE LAST WHIG CONVENTION. The Whig National Convention of 1852 as- sembied on the 16th of June in Baltimore, nd Was in session six days. Daring that me fifty-three ballots were taken, com- mencing with 131 for Scott, 133 for Fillmore, and 2) for Webster. Scott was finally nomi- nated. Frankiin Pierce was elected as a candidate for President by the democratic party on the Ist of the same month (in the same = the 49th baliot, Lewis Cass led off with a majority on the first ballots, Pierce recetying no votes. W.R. King, of Alabama, was nominated Vice President by the same convention. The Free-soil democ- racy held @ national convention at Pitisoarg on the lith of August, isd2. Joan P. Hale, of New Ham: re, was named for the Pre- sidency, and W. Julien, of Indiana, for Vice President. TRE FIRST REPUBLICAN CONVENTION Wes held on the Ivth of June, 1556, in the city of Philadelphia.
