EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY.....00-..Miay 31, 1876. CROSBY 5S. HOYED........Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page Average Daily Circulation over 15,000,—being more than three times that of any other daily paper in Washington. ‘We bope and believe that Mr. Kerr will succeed in establishing his tnnocence of the charges against him, and yet it cannot well be denied that with the single exception of that against Belknap, the case, as made up against him, is as strong as is that against the accused in any of the investigations car- ried on by the House. As against the wit- ness Harney every candid man in the coun- try wou!d take his word without hesitation, such Is the confidence in bis purity and in- tegrity; but it will not besafe for him to rest bis vindication on the point of discrediting the teetimony of Harney, and denying his agency {u the matter of obtaining the com- mission for Green. As succinctly put by the “The facts, which do not admit of dispute, are that Green obtained a lieutenant’s com- miseion in the army by Mr. Kerr’s tnfluence, by Harnes’s interposition, and that e paid Harney $150. Green testifies that Harrey told hima that the money was paid to Mr. Kerr, but that he did not at the time, and ces bot row, believe that it was so = tHarney, on the contrary, testifies that e gave the money to Mr. Kerr. Mr. Kerr denies it. —e only point seriously_at issue, there- bis 5 gE Harney and sr. Kerr. On this por Mr. Kerr is explicit, but on Severs! ctren ui oer connected with it he is at favit. ld not remember having Known Green, batt the War department rec- ords show that he certified that he did know bh i regarded him as physically, men- tally and ng 2 t to discharge the duties ofa Treuter ant. Mr. Kerr denies =“ if he did know Green, he was introduced by Har- ney, but Harney swears that he was, and Green, who plumply says that he thinks Harney pocketed his money, nevertheless confirms Harney’s testimony in this regard. {t would be gross injustice to condemn Mr. Kerr without further hearing; he may be tn- nocent in spite of bis bad memory and bis contradictions; but when the further hear- ing is had, it isto be ho; that Mr. Kerr, instead of continuing to ¢evy Hi "s: ° cy in the ». ett direct his efforts to- ward exp! fast Mr. Kerr secured a de- pins “It ts settled sirable and much-sought appointment for Green, whom he did not Know, who was not in bis Cage who was opposed to him in ities, ard who was introduced to him b: @ map who took money from the applicant, and who bad not any valid ground of influ. ence with Mr. Kerr. Why was this? Tye is the question for Mr. Kerr to answer. = it, ——— = — in = sitenee est degree to exaggera’ @ suspicious cir- cumstances In the ease, but because we wish the explanation to be complete. It will not = 80 unless it covers the points we have in. “ne New York Post concludes a temperate article upou the same subject by saying : “It would be unfair to hold Mr. Kerr re- Sponsibie for democratic blunders; yet in his own person the S; ker isa victim to the Vicious system which his own political as- Sociates have adopted in carrying on reck- Jess, wholesale and undtseriminating tnves- tigations less to purify the public service than to serve @ partisan e end.” The late G. M. D. Bloss, of fhe Cincinnati Enquirer, who was killed by a railroad acci- dent @ few days ago, wrote a very illegible band, and it ts stated that only @ few com- pos wo had by long experience become “omi!iar with his peculiar chirography, could «ecipher it. It was remarkably like the baudwriting of the late Horace Greeley, only iufiuitely worse,,which is saying a good deal It was formerly the custom of certain ambi- Uous youngsters to secure scraps of Mr Greeley’s manuscript and try to acquire bis pecultar style. They were probably una- ware of the fct that Mr. Greeley himself frequently deplored his inability to write a legible hand, especially when his composi- tors interpreted “William H. Seward”—the heading of a leader—“Richard the Third,” and “True Hearts amorg the Lowly,” “Two Beats among the Lovely.” oo As many of the Senators spoke extempo- raneously in the debate on the question of jurisdiction in the Belknap impeachment case, and as no short-hand were present, the debate cannot now be given with accuracy. It was a mistake in closing the doors of the Senate during the discussion. This course was adopted out of respect for Precedents, which ought not to be followed. ———_-see—___—__ George Parker, whotried to ride 305 miles in fifteen hourson Mexican mustangs, but failed on the 226th mile, because of the fail- ure of his sight, proposes to try it again to- morrow. Thirty mustangs are to be used, and the rider will remount another pony at the end of every mile. To accomplish this feat he must ride every mile in a little leas than three minutes, which includes the time taken in mounting and dismounting, and each mustang will be required to ran ten and one sixth miles in all, with sufficient time between the mile heats in which to become thoroughly rested. The feat looks compar atively easy for the mustangs, but it is ex- ceedingly questionable whether the riderhas sufficient eudurance to perform his part of it. —____-<---_____ Red Cloud, whose legions of Ogallalla Sioux covered the bills like a red cloud, as he expressed it, and who achieved the leader- ship of his people by gallantly fighting his way up from the rans, Is fast losing control over bis young men who are reported to be going off daily by the hundred for the scalps of the Black Hills tre«passers. The young bucks, as they are calied in the army, have but Little respect for old age, especially when it brings conservatism with it, and it is not unlikely, ifthe majority of the Sioux become bostile, that some other leader than Ked The shooting between the American and Irish rife teams in the coming international contest at Philadelpiia, promises to be pretty close. The Americans, it will be re- collected, were victors both at Dollymount and Creedmoor. Both teams are in full Practice. In the late rifle game at Creed- moor, Judge Gildersleeve made @ score of 204 points out of @ possible 225, and recently at Dundalx Mr. Rigby, of the Irish team, made 190 out of @ possible 200, which was coasiderabiy better masksmanship than that displayed by Judge Gildersiceve. This, how- ever, is only an individaal instance on ‘Which it would be unsafe to hazard any pre- diction as te the result of the coming con- test. ———_—_-<0+-___ ‘The oration of Gen. Woodford at Arlington yesterday was distinguished for proper feel- ing and patriotic sentiment. The time has gone by when Decoration Day orators should indulge in partisan barangues, and General ‘Woodford seems to appreciate tne fact. The recent “pagan fuceral” of the Baron ce Palm, under the auspices of the Theosoph- ical Society, in New York, was @ curious affair. In the liturgy, for iristance, the mas- ter propounded the following conundrum: “How the equilibrium of motion pre- served?” The response was: “By antag> nism, life and death, light and shadow, good and evil, spirit and matter. By these are athescales kept evenly balanced.” Again, in relation to equilibrium, the master said, «There is but one first cause, uncreated, eter- nal, infiniteand unknown. The soul of man 4s immortal, and bis earthly life @ point Jn the center of eternity. is in explarstion, everybody will know just how Ap is with “equilibrium.” SPECIAL BARGATNS i” DRESS GOODE. t % ned. 160 pieces sty!
