As to the letter written in December last to @ friend in Texas, the committee in- quired whether the letter showed that Fitz- bugh Was @ man of such discretion and sense @s to be intrusted with the responsibie duties devolving upon him as doorkeeper. As to the manner in which the letter was made public ibe committee bad nothing to do. The letter is foolish. a gives evidence of an unevenly-balanced mind, while the appointment of his son to a high position sbows a violation of the rales of the civil service. There is enough in the letter to show him unfit for his office, and the committee recommend te adoption of two resolutions First. That the office of Doorkeeper be va- cated by the present Incumbent. Second. That the duties of Doorkeeper be evolved temporarily upon the Sergeant at- Arms, The resolutions were adopted. Mr. Kelley (Pa.) made the point of order that this was not in order, as ft changed ex- isting laws and was not in the direction of economy and retrenchment. Instead of ecou- omy it would be gross extravagance to sell League Island. Mr. Lewis (Ala.) argued that it was in the direction of economy, as it saved the ex- penditure of millions of collars. The Chair decided the point of order not well taken. Pending consideration the committee rose, and the House, at 6 p. m., adjourned. Mydrophobia Newark.
