EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: TUESDAY... 000+ iny 16, 1876 CROSBY 5. HOYE........Editor. Average Daily Circulation over | 15,000,—being more than three times that of any other daily | paper in Washington. | °c esl lc eA ! the National Calamity cigets this week. Wonder if John Thomas has trade much by his parsimony and sticks? Bees that the campaign is closed, we ‘wonder that D. P.. who is not wanting = ehivaious frankness on occasion, does not jown up that he has been badly beaten by John 'T. Ford, or “John Thomas,” as he styles him. And, by the way, how Is it that Donn, who is In the habit of complaining that jculy thin-witted people, who can’t handle lany other weapon persist in calling him “Dunn Piatt,” “Dom Pirate,” &¢, should jhave no other weapon in his armory to fling lat Ford than a slang name? | The sad truth must be confessed, as illus- rated by the result of Donn’s ferocious ra'd ‘wpon “John Thomas,” that the public care ‘very little for theatrical “criticism,” so call- el, especially when an animus of pique or yersenal hostility is transparent. Since Dona irst came incollision with Ford, aad the latter wrathfully but not very sensibly ‘ithdre# his advertising from the Capital, that paper bas brought all Its vitriolic bat- teries to bear upon Fort, to brea down his | busivess. D. P. has told the pabite with abundant iteration that his name was Jono Thomas; that his company were worthless sticks; that his stars were fiftn rate; his jerebestra vile; his stage appointments lexecrable; his theater a dingy hole; that ‘there was undoubtedly @ malarial cesspool under it; that theater-goers entered the building at the risk of their lives from fire; that assassination was the likeliest thing in ‘the world to happen at any theater managed by Ford; and the amused public have won- dered that Donn hesitated short of charging | @Bpon the wicked John Thomas the deliberate | Gesign of entrapping Congress, the Execu- tive, and the elite of Washington and the nation into his “National Calamity,” and Plowing the whole concern skyward with an ‘UDparsir onious amount of dynamite. Well, the grand result is that Ford, instead of be- ing crushed out, has had, for these dull times, jan exceptionally successful season. The [public have discounted all the Cupifal’s John /Thomas, stick-stock, fire-fiend ebullitions; and, sacdest of all, have seemed to delight to crowd the “National Calamity” in the | cama most terride blasts of warn- The fact is, John T. Ford is a good deal of |& man; as the people of Washington and Baltincre, who have known him for thirty years, fu'ly appreciate. His own city has shown that appreciation by placing him repeate:!'y in her foremost positions of honor jana tris: Probably no other theatrical manager in our country was ever so compli- mented for integrity, business capacity and good citizenship. His long record as a suc- jeessful manager is especially honorable to mim. He understands his business thor- joughly. tulfils his contracts to the letter, and his bills. He is not of the spread eagle tyle of green managers, with which Wash- i on is unhappily familiar, who commence /@ season with tremendous promises, and P disastrously half way through, jJeaving their company and a host of cred- itors unpaid. Ford, indeed, deserves the good Will of the Washington news- @s about the only manager who a’t swindled the printer. Toat he knows to cater for the public is shown by his {general success; which would seem to be the direct test. Ford is @ keen, vigorous writer, too. D. P. Weems to have been considerably astonished by the quality of theadversary hehad waked Up, and paid Ford the compliment of charg- ang that he had employed some trained Writer to carry on his part of the controver- Sy. But every word was Ford's own; and the pubiic began to suspect that, instead of Piatt being able to instruct Ford as a mana- _ Ford could teach Piatt a wrinkle or two in journalism. Now, that the two comba- tants have fully tested each other's prowess, ‘We advise them to drop the profitiess con- test, and learn to entertain that mutual Jiking that Col. Dumas tells us in the play, ‘we feel towards those with whom we have tht. ——_-+e- -___ Since the agitation cf the subject of the of unfermented wine for sacramental many persons have inquired just unfermented wine is. The Rev. A.C. . dish told the New York Methodist min- jis! at their weekly meeting, yesterday, itcould be made: The way to make it, said, was to boll the grapes over a slow fire until the pulp separates from the skin. d ‘sufficient water to prevent burning, ‘hen press the jalce through a fine cloth, hen add four pounds of sugar to every gallon pf juice, bo.l again and put the wine into the e_while very hot. This costs about one Pergallon. He produced a quantity this wize, which was -‘sampled” by the , Who pronounced it “very sweet.” | pu Certain residents of Petersburg, Virginia, headed by the mayor, propose to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday on the 21th of this ontb, and the New York Evening Post oks that while it may be all right and proper, there is a point of view from which it ie eutertainingly odd, nevertheless. The Which is signed by the mayor, and “presideut of the celebration,” asks “one d all to join in honoring the birthday of Majesty Queen Victoria (and it might we added ‘Empressof India’), and in add. one more liuk to the golden chain of fection which binds together the people of United States and the British people.” Hit may besaid in explapation of this cele- on that it has been the custom of the number of British immigrants who ithin the last ten years have made Virginia helr home, to celebrate each recurring an- niversary of the Queen's birinday, and that coming celevration is doubtless under heir auspices. The mayor of Petersburg nd other prominent natives of Virginia see Ot to participate ia it, and by so doing press their respect for an estimable woman @ wise ruler, and in this it is hard to see impropriety.
