The popular impression seems to be that im the population of Salonica, where the riot between the Mohammedans and the Christians recently occurred, the former nu- merteally exceed the latter, whereas in fact out of @ population of perhaps 75,000, there #re but about 5,000 Turks. Longfellow was solicited for ‘@ contribution, but very sensibly declined to go into training for the occasion. The Balti- more Gazette says of Whittier’s bymn, that "it is @ very feeble performance, is on a ead level of stagnant madiocrity, and is ‘Without a single redeeming line.” This is perhaps too severe. The poem, while not an exceptionally brilliant production, is as Gignified as the occasion demanded, and has ‘the merit of directness. If it does not add to the reputation of the distinguished author, At will not detract from !t. Not so much can be said for Lanier’s cantata.
