MORPHIA—A Lady's Pavel Use of It. arau E. Morgan, of 55 west 12th street, yesterday. On Saturday evening Mrs. Morgan and Mr. aud Mrs. H A. Allen, who live in the same house, sat down to a game of cards. After playing e time Mrs. Morgan left the room, but ned and resumed the game, saying that sbe bad just taken a doseof laudanam. Soon afterward Mrs. Morgan grew drowsy, aud at last retired. Mr. Morgan returned from his business late, and be found his wife lying dressed upon the bed, uncouscious, and hold- in her hand @ box of morphia. He roused Mr. and Mrs. Allen and ran for a physician. Mr. Allen ascertained that no morpliia had been used out of the box. The fatal dose had evidently been taken from a two ounce vial of jaudanum that was on the bureau empty. Dr. Wetzel used the customary remedies, and twenty-four hours of this treatment pro- duced some results that seemed favorable, but a sudden ch: intervened, and she died early yesterday morning. Mrs. Morgan bad been yf macro gegen since the death of her young daughter, a year and a haif ago. Her nervous system has been much pros- trated since, and recourse to narcotics Was the consequence. J.) mystery is ina fuir way of being solved, by the arrest on Friday evening, in Port Jervis, of Mrs. Mary Maun, who is now in the Sussex county jail @waiting trial for murder. Mrs. Maun had been the wife of a farmer in Hardwicke township, Sussex county, named Jabez Sa- vercoal, and Enos Mann, the present hus- band of the woman, was one of the farm bands. An intimac; ——— between the laborer and the wife, whi ied to much town gossip. Mrs. Savercoal usually carried ber husband's dinner tohim while he worked in thefield. One day she left in great haste, leaving the dinnerdishes behind her, contra- ry to her custom. Almost immediately after be bad eaten hisdinner Savercoal was taken with a violent fit of vomiting anddied in great pain. The neighbors suspected that he had been poisoned by the woman, but no steps were ever taken to secure her arrest. Soon after the death of Savercoal the woman married the farm laborer, but her domestic affairs did not run smooth! bitter quarrels ensued. their quarrels Mrs. Mann two or three days -, her arrested for assault. le in retaliation charged her with having caused the death of her first husband by poi- soning him.
